Chobe Tented Safari
Reviewed July 28, 2013

We spent two nights at Chobe Under Canvas, an &Beyond camp. The service and food were wonderful. It was very special to hear lions roaring nearby as we ate dinner under the stars. During the night, we heard elephants eating near the tents and other animals walking near the camp. Animal sightings were unbelievable. We could sit in one spot and see so many various animals. We even saw two very rare species of antelope. Our only complaint was the poor lighting in the tents. otherwise, what an experience! Be aware that this is a national park and the Landrovers cannot go off road to follow animals as they can on private reserves.

We selected a range of different lodges for our four week tour in Southern Africa, and the tented safari in Chobe National Park was the most basic, and cheapest. These are real tents - two person tents without any ablutions. The camp itself has one chemical toilet, and a bush shower. One does not venture out of the tent once the fires are out, and an emergency pot is provided - in case.

The food was really good, better than many proper 3 or 4 star lodges we stayed at. The advantage of staying in the Chobe National Park is that one gets to spend just that little bit more time both evening and morning in the reserve.

On arrival we were given a river cruise, which was really wonderful, seeing not just elephant, hippo and crocodiles, but seeing some interactions too. The pity of the game park however is that there are a large number of vehicles in it, and on one lion chase, I counted 17 vehicles. That of course is the problem with public parks.

However one truly has to see Chobe, as the landscape with the river is truly one of those images that will stay with you all your life.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two days of basic camping, but were glad the rest of our trip offered more amenities.
