My husband and I spent two nights at Savute Under Canvas in early June. We were picked up and greeted by our wonderful guide, Samuel, and arrived at camp with staff waiting with hot towels and a cool drink. The tent was very comfortable, much more so than I expected. I thought we would be freezing at night, but with lots of layers and the very much appreciated hot water bottles waiting for us every night, we were very comfortable. The flush toilets worked perfectly well, and the bucket shower had nice hot water after our final game drive of the day. The meals were very good, and I was pleasantly surprised at all the delicious dishes the chef made over an open fire. One of my favorite parts of each evening was sitting by the fire with a drink and listening to great stories from camp staff and talking with other guests. Reuben has some very entertaining wildlife tales!

The true highlight of Savute, though, is the game drive. Samuel was a superb guide. We left early in the morning to be the first in the park and were rewarded with a great leopard siting. On our full day in camp, we had a 6 1/2 hour morning game drive because we saw so much wildlife! A highlight of our afternoon game drive was seeing a large herd of elephants walk single file to Savute Channel for a drink as the sun was going down. Samuel made sure we were always well positioned for photography and that each guest was having a great experience.

A final note about &Beyond...our trip planning experience could not have gone more smoothly. Everything was taken care of from beginning to end by Jayne, our &Beyond representative. I highly recommend this company for anyone taking a safari.

Room tip: If you are going in winter, you'll have a much better experience if you bring a variety of layers of clothing. In the morning, we wore a t-shirt, a sweater, a fleece, knit hat and gloves. Blankets and hot water bottles are provided on the morning game drive to keep you warm. By mid-afternoon we were wearing shorts, a t-shirt and straw hat for sun protection.

Really was expecting a simple tent with very basic shower ad loo facilities.... What a surprise when taken to large tent with a "proper shower room"!! A flushing loo was just incredible! Camping - more like 5 star glamping!! Staff were attentive, friendly. Food relatively simple but spot on and delicious. We were there to find game and we were not disappointed. The guides were outstanding and I don't know how they managed it but we seemed to be one step ahead of any other group. From 7 in the morning till late in the afternoon they just kept popping out of the bushes.... We stayed in 3 & Beyond camps/lodges and this one is where we saw the best game. I have photos of lions and leopards almost brushing up against the truck. Some of the time we were escorted as just a couple with a personal guide and other times no more than 4 in the truck. Looking on at other trucks we saw up to 9 crammed in. Savute is very different to Ocavango Delta, a great change in scenery and the best game photos were snapped here. Again & Beyond really do understand exactly what guests want....

Room tip: Weather was freezing cold at beginning and end of day, take appropriate clothing...

We had a wonderful time staying here. It was plenty luxurious for us and extremely luxurious for camping! Normal toilet, huge bed, nice showers, sturdy tent-- it was great! The camp is staffed by about 10 people who are extremely attentive and friendly. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and wonderful. We saw amazing animals, and even when there was no large game to see, our guide, Morgan, was wonderful at finding other extremely interesting things to discuss. That is not to say that we didn't see great game- we saw tons of lions, wild dog, elephant, giraffes, etc etc. There were quite a few other trucks out seeing game- maybe more than other locations we went in Botswana, but we were often able to be the first ones there in the morning and the last ones there in the evening due to our convenient camping location, so we were not bothered by the others. Amazing camping experience!

We arrived at Savute after visiting 2 more luxurious camps. Savute under Canvas was not that. We were skeptical to begin but after 2 nights and 4 game drives it turned out to be the highlight of our safari experience. Samuel was our guide and he was truly amazing. We saw numerous leopards, lions, elephants, giraffes as well as rare wild dogs. But what made Samuel special was his knowledge of birds. He had a 400 page book of African birds memorized and could identify the birds and what page they were on in the book so we could keep track. The whole camp staff was outstanding and the food which was cooked by Philemon (who was a true character) was delicious. In the end this was a tremendous finish to our fantastic Botswana experience. This was our second African experience organized by Lauren Johannsen at Go To Africa and they were both tremendous.

Room tip: There is no pool or fitness center. Hit by accident.
