“Perfect place to stay when you come to Carlsbad Caverns”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

I visited Carlsbad Caverns with a friend early in Jan 2013, and we were planning an overnight stay there. After reading the earlier reviews, we were apprehensive about staying here.
I checked the prices online, and found that with a military discount, our room (2 queens) would cost us about $70.00. I didn't want to make the drive into Carlsbad after being on the road all day, and this was a reasonable price, so we made the reservation.

After reading about renovations in the reviews below, I assume they are now complete, and we were very please with our room. The shower/tub was VERY clean, spotless like brand new. There was no mildew in the edges. The heater was quiet, and beds were comfy.

The only negative I can think of was the location of extra electrical outlets; there were none on the wall by the beds, and they all turn off/on with the light switch. Even the alarm clock was positioned on the other side of the room. (Big deal, right?) Wi-fi was pretty fast, but you might want to bring an extension cord if you like to surf the net in bed.

We had a fridge and microwave in the room, both were clean and functional. The location was right up the street from a good restaurant (I'll also leave a review there) that serves dinner and breakfast. Less than 15 minutes to the Caverns, walking distance to a decent restaurant, friendly staff, parking right in front of our room. We passed on the very fatty muffins for breakfast, but appreciated the OJ.

After an exhausting day exploring the Caverns, this was a nice place to relax, take a nap and then head back up for photographing the night sky. I'd stay here again and recommend the Rodeway Inn without a doubt.

I was leaving the park after dark, after watching the bat flight, and other people there told me that Hotels in Carlsbad were all booked up and expensive, so I was getting a bit worried. This hotel was on the edge of the park in a little one street town, so I stopped in expecting the worst, but they had a room, and after tax was 90. I was pleasantly surprised at the size, I don't think I've ever seen a non luxury room that big. Since you are kind of in the middle of nowhere, it was very quiet - had a great sleep. It's a bit older, nothing is new or shiny, could use a buff up, but to the best of my knowledge, it's the only hotel in the area.. There is no breakfast, but there is a mediocre restaurant beside it.

Thanks for your review! We really work hard to provide the best experience possible for our guests and are glad you enjoyed your stay!

You are not alone in having trouble finding a hotel with vacancy and at a decent price. The reason prices are so high in Carlsbad is because there is an increase in oil drilling occurring in the West Texas and Southeast New Mexico region. This “oilfield boom” has caused an increase of thousands of out-of-towners who need a place to stay while they work. The oilfield companies reserve hotel rooms and sometimes entire hotel floors for their employees. The increased demand, and limited supply of lodging in the area causes a significant increase in hotel prices. Some hotels in Carlsbad have rates as high as $229 USD per night as a result.

We strive to offer the best price we can to allow customers a great deal on the closest hotel to the Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

We apologize you did not get the free muffins, orange juice, and coffee available in the lobby for breakfast. We will improve at informing our guests about our free breakfast.

Thank you again for your positive review!

-The Rodeway Inn Internet Management team

*Rodeway Inn management has decided not to allow oil companies to reserve rooms for employees to provide a quiet and peaceful stay for everyone else.

The Cavern Inn in White’s City, NM is distant from the Rodeway Inn and is solely for oilfield workers.

Stayed here for one night in jan 2013. It's definitely the closest place you can stay to the Caverns. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, check in and check out. The rooms are huge!! We had a double bed room and there was still room for cartwheels! (If one were so inclined.) The beds were comfy and we had no problem staying warm. Breakfast in the AM was a carton of OJ or coffee and muffins. There was a fun looking small waterpark that looks like it'd be a blast in the summer. My only complaint was that its a little on the pricy side for a small hotel, but definitely a good value for how remote of a location and proximity to the park. Stars at night at gorgeous, but you may have to drive out of the parking lot for a good view.

Were there at veterans`day. Paid 85.49 $.
Room was very clean and staff very friendly, but no breakfast.
The environment is very nice and the sunrice was great. No noise at all and the shortest way to carlsbad caverns. At least a little bit overpriced.
P.S. entree to the caverns at veterans`day is free.

I ended up at Rodeway Inn after every acceptable hotel in Carlsbad ended up fully booked when I arrived in town! In the end, this turned out to be a good thing. Rodeway Inn was perfectly fine and comparatively better-located. It's nothing special, but it's relatively clean, quiet, and since every hotel in Carlsbad is extraordinarily overpriced, it's not like you could find a better deal* anywhere nearby. Breakfast is somewhat lacking: just coffee, OJ, and prepackaged tiny muffins - so you may want to plan ahead if you need more than that.

* You can certainly find cheaper options in Carlsbad, but after checking out one such hotel I decided it was worth paying the $90+ dollars that the "better" (read: acceptable) hotels were charging.

I overlooked all the negative reviews and stayed here due to the location. I was pleasantly surprised that the property was not anything like the negative reviews. Our room,126, was large, clean and comfortable. We (my wife and I) only stayed 1 night but would have been happy to stay there longer if our plans called for it. I really don't understand the anger and disappointment that was reported. Those wishing to stay near the Caverns can't go wrong staying here.Staff was friendly and cooperative. Just wish the restaurant nearby was open-would have saved an 18 mile drive to Carlsbad which wasn't that bad of a drive.

Room Tip: No fitness center or room service.

This hotel has a great location and allowed me the time to drive to the Caverns and make it through the caves, return to the hotel to rest for a bit, and return for the flight of the bats. Also, its location shaved a solid 30 min off my trip from the caverns down to El Paso.

The hotel itself is your run-of-the-mill inn/motel. If you are looking for a really nice place with a very nice room, go to Carlsbad itself. However, if you are looking for a place to stay near to the Caverns, this is your place.
