Absolutely perfect setting for a romantic getaway along the garden route, grootbos is the most luxurious spot in Gansbaai, prime whale watching territory. The resort is split into two lodges, we stayed in the forest lodge where the rooms are luxury lodges set in a milk wood forest and surrounded by the widest selection of Fynbos flora and fauna. The panoramic views over the bay are beautiful and the lodges are built to enjoy them to the full with wall to ceiling glass. The rooms are truly special, you'll want to allow time to wallow in the wonderful bathroom with it's scented candles and just relax and rejuvenate.
Dinner and drinks are served in the forest lodge and Micheal Lutzeyer and his team will take excellent care to ensure you have an evening to remember.
There are plenty of activities to try including horse riding, nature trail experiences, shark diving etc. We went whale watching and got up close and personal with a large female and her already fairly large calf, an awesome experience to be thoroughly recommended. All in all a first rate hotel with experiences to match. Pricey but worth every penny, I'll never forget it.

We had no idea what to expect when our tour company booked us 1 nt at this nature reserve. We were pleasantly surprised to find this 5 star accommodation in the middle of no where. We loved every minute of our experience from our tour of the 2 schools that the owner James has created to educate locals on horticulture and agriculture, to the fine dining and spectacular views of the area. Should I ever win the lottery I will be booking the 6 bedroom villa that is about 9000 sq ft with its own pool, chef etc. this is a great experience for nature lovers looking for quiet relaxation, hiking, and fine accommodation. Staff were extremely friendly, especially Aneke, who gave us our tour and is a graduate of one of the schools. She is a gem.

What a great hotel/experience - we stayed here with our two small kids and were blown away by the staff, decor and the entire experience. From the minute we arrived we had our every need taken care of and the children had a great time too.

We had a wonderful dinner in the restaurant too which should not be missed. It makes you feel so close to nature and I can highly reccomend the property for anyone wanting to experience real 5 star luxury and service set in a undisturbed piece of nature!

Room Tip: Arrive early for dinner so as to see the sun go down from the deck!

We ended our South African journey at Grootbos, and it was memorable! Upon our arrival, we were a bit disconcerted by the surroundings, but once we entered the reception area, from that point on, it was a wonderful experience.....if you've ever been to the Explora Lodge in Patagonia, it's much the same idea.....a questionable first impression that quickly morphs into an understanding and appreciation of the environment and beauty of the resort. We couldn't believe our eyes when we saw our suite; it was large, comfortable and most attractive; all the amenities you could want. We thought the food and service were incredible; a lot of attention to detail. We were only there three nights and chose to do the cave tour, guided morning hike on the grounds and a hike on our own around the property; the cave tour and our own hike were highlights. We missed the beach walk as it was way too windy that day! Also did the horseback ride that was just a walk and not that interesting; it's more fun to do the walking on your own two feet and really get the feel of being a part of the South African Fynbos which is vegetation unique to this part of the world. The owner has created a lovely resort in every respect; we thank him and only wish we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: One of the newer rooms close to the reception building

Spent two nights at Grootbos and had just an incredible experience. Our 'room' was essentially a cottage, very comfortable and large. Staff was very attentive. Did a walking beach/cave tour and took the driving tour. Both were wonderful.

My single complaint....we couldn't stay longer.
