We could only spend one night at Grootbos during our recent visit to Africa and wish it could have been longer. This is one of the most relaxing places we have ever visited. The large luxurious cottages are strategically spaced so that you have no idea if you have neighbours or not. The location within the forest is something special, with fabulous views of the coastline. We had a private dinner in the outdoor Boma which was a most amazing experience with one of our best meals in our journey. Staff provided as much or little attention you desired. If you want to get away from it all and truly relax, this is the place to go.

Normally, when you read about Africa, it's all about "big" - sunsets, landscapes, game. Grootbos is different. In fact, the charm and beauty of the Reserve, and its wonderful staff, are in the detail.

First and foremost, it's in the subtle and seemingly infinite variations of the 'fynbos' that the reserve was established to protect, and that the staff encourage you to learn more about during your stay. There's a joy in discovering that apparently unremarkable scrub land is in fact a vital habitat possessed of subtle shades, faces and moods, full of rich life and colour if you take the time to really look. Compared to chasing big game, hunting for spider's nests and lizards may not sound like much, but it's on a perfect scale for young children - like the ponies stabled on the premises and available for rides every day, and the animals kids are encouraged to feed and have contact with.

Second, it's about service - the attention to detail of everybody knowing our three year-old son's name after two days, and delighting in making his stay as great as ours - plus having the time and patience to look after him; splendid food coming out of the kitchen for meal after meal (with perfectly runny poached eggs every time, those details again...), with local produce to the fore and some wonderful fresh fish - try kingklip when you can, it's delicious; and, finally, Michael the owner offering to make a three-hour round trip to Cape Town, to drop us to the airport, when our taxi failed to arrive at 4 in the morning on our day of departure.

Third was the fact that all the staff seemed to love what they do - and wanted to share that passion, and had the time to stop and chat about it. This is a place with its own philosophy and spirit that the staff really buy into, and it shines through.

In terms of basic facts, the rooms were lovely and beds comfortable: the views pristine and spectacular; the swimming pool warm and friendly; the food excellent and the wine list interesting and very reasonably priced, drawing on all local vineyards. The activities were fun and able to be geared to young or old alike, and the chance to see whales, sharks, seals, penguins and dolphins on a single boat trip shouldn't be missed; it was absolutely spectacular.

All in all, we had a blissful holiday in a wonderful location. The hotel was stunning, but the people were the highlight. And when the location is as lovely as Grootbos, that really is a compliment to the owner and his staff. Would love to visit again when we have the opportunity and thank you for such a wonderful stay.

Great views, great service, excellent food all in the name of preserving the natural wonder that is the fynbos. Besides the 5star treatment, the owners and staff's commitment to uplift the community through various projects is nothing short of inspiring. Definately looking forward to visiting again.

Spent the week from the 09th till 13th Jan 2012.
we stayed at the garden lodge and the experience was AWSOME!!! The menu and food presentation was on point. I must send a special complement to the chef. Although the meal portions were small, the 6 course meal made my stomach satisfied.

The staff was really friendly, I could feel the family spirit they have. Compliment to to you all. The rooms are fantastic, I stayed in suit 5 with my brothers and not once did we miss home.

The activities we got to do were really interesting, I personally enjoyed all of them.

This is one of the best holiday resorts I have been at. KEEP THE GOOD WORK GOING!!!

Astalavista! I'll be back.

This was my second time at Grootbos and i feel that the place really grows on you. The feel of the garden lodge is for big families. The staff are welcoming and make you feel welcome and are willing to cater to your every need. The general feel of Grootbos is perfect for relaxation. The honest truth is, the best part of the stay was the activities they offered us, I enjoyed the flower safari and I can guarantee that other will agree
