We found this B&B when we decided to stay in De Kelders (just north of Gansbaai) on a whim one afternoon after hours of whale watching off the cliffs in Hermanus and the terrace of the 'Coffee on the Rocks' in De Kelders.
The owner, Gideon, lives just across the street and made quite an effort to be present as much as possible, so although you technically don't stay at somebody's house, you still get much attention as well as good advice and we really enjoyed that.
This B&B is literally on the rocks overlooking Walker Bay and we stayed in mid-October, so in the middle of a fantastic whale watching season. You cannot be closer to the bay than here and the views of the common deck (used for sundowners and breakfast and whenever you want to use it) are just awe-inspiring. You see the entire bay all the way round to Pringle Bay and we saw at least a dozen of whales at any given time.
The rooms are furnished with taste and attention and lots of effort has been put into being modern and very comfortable. All rooms are equipped with a Nespresso coffee maker (wow!) as well as yoga mats (nice! I assume they have classes there or just want to give you the chance to practice on the deck overlooking the water - what a lovely gesture!), refrigerator, minibar, lots of wine to chose from, TV, DStV etc. and all seemed to have a balcony facing the water as well as private patio furniture/sun-chairs. There is also a plunge pool on a lower deck, still overlooking the bay, which also has a few sun-loungers. The Cliff Lodge is right on the water front with direct access to the cliff path running along that stretch of the coast, so you can go walking along the cliffs any time you like - we observed whales before dinner and breakfast right in front of the lodge, although you could have seen them also from the patio or your private balcony (just a little bit more set back :-)
The common room is equipped with an honesty bar, lots of interesting books and CDs.

We really enjoyed the attention and effort to assist us in our stay. We also very much enjoyed the buffet-style breakfast. In addition you can also choose a hot breakfast, which was delicious and we particularly like to mention the effort put into serving very fresh and high quality foods, like a fresh squeezed juice, organic muesli and different types of really good breads and cheeses. You could not want for more, especially when you add the ocean view!
Thank you, Gideon, Jill, Nico and the rest of the team, for a lovely stay! We will be back next whale watching season!

Well where do we start after 4 nights on luxurious safari on our our honeymoon we headed to our first experience of staying at a guest house and it was like a five star hotel. We booked here due to the trip advisor reviews and they exceeded any expectations we had.

Greeted by Gideon on arrival later than we had hoped because of air delay we were told he had booked us dinner locally nearby if we wanted which I thought was a lovely touch. Over the stay they recommended places to stay and when to do trips due to weather etc, everything was thought about.

Our room the Ocean suite was one of the best we have ever stayed in and was lovely to sit on decking or on lounge chairs spotting the whales, dolphins!

Those memories will stay with me forever.

Breakfast was a feast in itself and the owners Gideon and Gill and staff especially Nico are a credit to the Cliff Lodge. Nico even came up to our room to point out the young white calf that was close to the rocks near our balcony.

If we are ever in South Africa again we will definitely be back!!

Thanks again

Sam and Adrian

Nothing but FABULOUS. We broke down in Hermanus, they helped us with a mechanic, we were without a car for 3 days and they helped us, lent us their car to get to dinner etc. Took us to Hermanus to collect the car.

The view from Cliff Lodge is to die for with whales meters from the Lodge. The knowledge of everyone on wildlife was exceptional.

Opt for one of the Ocean facing rooms with full view from your bed of the whales and ocean.

Gideon and Gill are gems, always willing to assist. Nico goes beyond the call of duty and always willing to help.

Book early or you will miss an opportunity of a life time.

Room Tip: Choose one of the larger ocean rooms. 3 rooms are ideal for those with mobility issues.

What a place - perfect location, great hosts, great room & whales on the doorstep.
Forget Hermanus, Cliff Lodge is THE place for whale watching in SA. It was perfect, sitting on verandah watching whales at foot of cliffs. Morning, noon or night.
Gideon was full of great advice on places to go & also restaurants. One local one we walked to was great.

To no surprise are all the reviews on the first few pages (I did not read all) only positive. This place is fantastic. Thank you, Gideon for all the cuppachino's and advice, Nico for the super fresh juice and interesting facts about the (hundreds) of whales right in front of the house and Gil for the chocolate cake you produced from somewhere when we felt like a snack!

We loved our room, the service, the walks, the whales, caves, breakfast, views and the outside shower!!

See you again soon.
Pierre and Angie

Room Tip: The east room is the best. Fairly private with outside shower. (a little noise from the kitchen, but...

The location is truly fantastic - you cannot hope for better views of Walker bay and it just has a feeling of raw & beautiful nature. It's a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Hermanus. We weren't lucky with the weather (huge storm) so did not really get to spot any whales but it still felt great to be out there in the midst of the elements.

The rooms are what you would expect for a B&B of this standing but what really makes the experience amazing is the kindness of the staff: Gil, Gideon and Nico are wonderful hosts full of great advice and stories who really made as feel welcome and at home.

Will surely be back !
