“High expectations - pretty much as expected”

After spending a couple of days in Hermanus two years ago, we decided to try something different this trip. We traveled with 2 kids, 11 and 9, to de Kelders and stayed at Xairu for three nights. The property was clean and well kept, there were many rooms to choose from and plenty of room in the evenings to sprawl and read a book in front of the fireplace. Obtaining the key was simple enough with a GPS device and the lady who showed us to the house (forget the name, sorry!) was very friendly and more than helpful.
While the house has a modern architecture and hints luxury and contemporary style, there were a few weird "features" that made me wonder like the door to the room with the wardrobes when open would block the passageway to the bedroom; lying in bed the walls appeared overly massive with unnecessary and impractical niches and corner windows (?!) that can impossibly be cleaned properly. Just off the terrace a lovely natural garden with fynbos and sand but alas some haphazard, half-finished brick wall of sorts which looked like building rubble. Admittedly very trivial issues with an otherwise nearly perfect residence. Definitely a great place to stay in De Kelders.

Do the spectacular and very adventurous, scenic cliff walk which will take you to a beautiful beach in the nature reserve (three or four hours with kids who want to climb rocks, collect shells and stones and a father who wants to photograph every one of the 50 whales ...) - take enough water and food because the cafe at the other end of town might be closed. Try your luck at Grootbos for a sunset dinner - very much worth the extra expense. Another restaurant in town is brilliant: Rosemary’s Thyme. Highly recommended.

“A special place”
Reviewed January 21, 2015 for a stay in January 2015

Already a week since we are back at home and we are still missing the wonderful views from Xairu and reminiscing about our holiday!

We spotted a few whales in the distance - although it was not whale watching season - a school of dolphins and what looked like a shark catching something in the huge waves close to the house! The pheasants and mongoose also provided entertainment as they were trying to outsmart each other. And if my son had not sprained his toes on the second day we would have taken many more walks along the cliff path to the tidal pool. All memories that make a holiday special!

Xairu provides a perfect base to explore the region and is a well equipped sanctuary to come back to! Can't wait to come back to this special place in whale season for a perfect view of the passing mothers and calves!

“Amazingly wonderful”
Reviewed December 6, 2014 for a stay in November 2014

My wife, our 3 kids (5y, 3y and 8mo) and I stayed in this architectural delight for 2 nights to see whales and to cage dive with the great white (me).
The house is completely furbished, everything is there to have a very pleasant and easy stay, it's just as being home which is very useful having a baby.
We even saw a whale with calve from the upper terras having fun!
The lady taking care of the renters is a very nice and joyful!
A tremendous recommender to have a nice and luxurious stay.

“Whale-watchers paradise”
Reviewed October 2, 2014 for a stay in September 2014

Xairu was all that was promised and more. It is a beautiful house right on the water with amazing views from the balcony and the kitchen. We were treated to up-close whale-watching while eating breakfast!
The house is very well maintained and stocked with all the necessary amenities. The rental agent was also very friendly and willing to answer any questions and also recommend good spots in the area.

Xairu is a beautifully modern house with breathtaking views. The house features a lot of amenities and is extremely well maintained. Panorama windows give the house a very specious feel and the balcony provides amazing views of the ocean.

“Magnificent location with views from every room”
Reviewed January 19, 2014 for a stay in January 2014

We enjoyed a weekend stay with our children (ages 7 and 9) and their grandparents, and all 3 generations had a wonderful time. Xairu enjoys the most magnificent location, right above the rocky coastline, with spectacular views of the ocean and mountains from every single room (yes, even the bathrooms). A well-equipped and extremely comfortable home with everything you need in the kitchen, comfortable beds, good security and a thoughtful owner who has left detailed information in the house on the local restaurants, walks and other attractions. An easy walk to a safe tidal pool for kids as well as the small beach at Stanford Cove. Well placed for shark diving (spectacular!) and we watched a whale frolicking in the bay while sipping a G&T on the patio. Highly recommended, and excellent value for money.

Liked best: Spectacular location with outstanding views
Liked least: Hard to fault it - if I must, I guess they could have left a bit more in the way of soap and toilet paper supplies, or perhaps the option of a non-allergic duvet - but then it was my fault for not checking on this beforehand!

For the first time in my life, the photos on the internet did not exaggerate. This house on the ocean was absolute wonderful in every way. Luxury, comfort, views and lots of space for a family as well as a guest.. We were sad to leave.,
