“Stunning”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

This experience was something I have been longing to do since I can remember, seeing whales in their natural habitat!! Dyer Island Cruises didn't disappoint me, their professional crew took such good care of us and showed us more than what we bargained for. Whales, great white sharks, penguins, seals and dolphins! Each encounter was natural, no need for baiting and disturbing them. There was always a member of the crew to explain the animal we were admiring, giving all kinds of information which kept the children and I captivated until the very end and I had 5 children with me that ranged from 4 yrs old to 13. They are also involved in saving the African penguin population of Dyer Island which I encourage all visitors to participate in, their diminishing numbers is another result of mans greed of resources and they are making a real difference. We adopted 10 penguin families and the kids couldn't be more proud.

“Dyer Island Cruise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

This boat trip was amazing! February is not "whale season" but our guides managed to spot two bryde's whales in addition to sharks, cape seals, and cormorants. The guides were very knowledgeable and we learned so much about these aquatic animals. The length of the trip (2 1/2 hours) was just right and the soup and sandwiches after the trip were so tasty. Brenda, the manager, was gracious and accommodating.

Thank you very much for your excellent review! Although it is technically our 'off-season', we still manage to find the most incredible sighting as sea in February. Thanks again!

Warm regards,
Michelle

“I'm still smiling 8 months later...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2013

Hey Whaley...? The call of the best skipper I've ever sailed with.

Taking this trip was by far the best decision I've ever made on a holiday. The day before I had sailed with the sister company Marine Dynamics on a great trip to dive with sharks and had seen plenty of whales.

But as great as that trip was, this experience with DIC surpassed it.

I'm smiling even as I write this.

Regards previous contribution about exploitation, it is better to increase knowledge of these majestic beasts - both whales and sharks - than allow them to be forgotten and served up in soup or as a cheap aphrodisiac thrill.

I travel the world wild animals in their natural habitats and found DIC no more exploitative than any other company in their line of work and actually far more professional and sympathetic in their approach and dedication to the subject. I have watched Whales off Perth, Monterey Bay and Vancouver - but never enjoyed a trip so much as this or felt that the animals were being so respected in their environments.

Regards previous comments about the small boat - it is perfect and fit for purpose. No huge engines, no unnecessary vibrations for the whales.

“Very good company for whale watching”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

The tour was organized through Grootbos Nature Reserve - the staff is very friendly, the tour was very exciting and wonderful. The film that was taken from the staff is recommended to buy, due to the low price and the quality.

“Conservation = exploitation”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

We visited SA in September and our hotel booked us a whale watching tour. We had no idea that Gansbaai the starting point of our tour was the shark cage centre of SA and were horrified to see so many people making money out of treating sharks like circus animals.
We were taken straight to the shark cage divers and what we saw was awful. Sharks encouraged to leap at the cages as the crew threw dried blood etc in to the water. This stresses the sharks and exhausts them and whilst they are entertaining adrenalin seekers, they become injured with bloody noses, become hungry as they are not eating and become stressed, and also learning that it is OK to attack boats!! I had a hissy fit with the captain as there is also evidence that sharks can leap in to boats by accident. we were on a small inflatable and the shark was sooooo close. After this terrible experience we did see some whales which was wonderful but the whole experience was spoilt by seeing real exploitation of stunning sharks in action for profit. We have had email conversations with Dyer about this and we will never agree as long as sharks continue to be treated as circus animals or puppets. We also went on another whale watching trip with Southern Right Charters whose ethics we were happier with. If you are a real conservationist this trip is not for you. Gansbaai is a dreadful place if you are an animal lover.

Thank you for your comments, I am so sorry to read that you were disappointed with one aspect of the trip. Its important that readers understand we are a whale and eco-trip company, not a shark cage diving company, so I am glad to read that the main part of your trip (the whales) was superb. Gansbaai, South Africa is the internationally recognized hotspot for white shark cage diving and we stop by those vessels on our way to the whales to give our clients added value for money (sharks, whales, seals, dolphins, and penguins... all in one trip!). I can assure you our 11.5m two story semi-rigid inflatable was not going to be (and never has been) attacked by any shark and the sharks do not learn it is OK to attack boats, otherwise we'd have to have one incredible indemnity form!! I do encourage you to read some of the valuable research on white sharks coming from this area via the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, of which we are a main contributor. You will find that many of the conclusions you have written here are not supported by research. Thank you for your comments. Cheers, Michelle - DIC.
