“Fun place to spend a few days”
Reviewed March 19, 2014

Bushmans Kloof is a beautiful get away fairly close to Cape Town. It was our first visit to this 7,500 hectare reserve located in the Cederberg Mountains area. They provide fantastic service and our experience was amazing. Please visit if you are looking for a relaxing and invigorating experience.

We had a very yummy wine tasting our first night there put on by Michel. The wines were delicious and we were able to see the wine cellar. We found the food to be quite good. Breakfast was served outdoors and in a beautiful setting. Dinner was spectacular and the wine pairing was perfect. The scenery at Bushmans Kloof is gorgeous whether you are on a tour with a guide or sitting at one of the chairs outside your room.

We were able to go about on mountain bikes followed by wonderful snacks and beverages in the wilderness at the end of our ride. If you go, please visit with one of the guides the ancient rock art.

We also had spa treatments here and they were fantastic.

All-in-all, this is a great place to relax. Great people, fantastic food, and amazing wine!

We stayed at Bushmans Kloof for 3 nights in February 2014 and we both wish it had been 6 or 7 nights instead! It was our first visit to this 7,500 hectare (80,000 acre) reserve in the Cederberg Mountains area and we were not disappointed. The reserve caters for a maximum of 34 people at any one time and therein lies the secret because that, in my opinion, is how they provide the wonderful service we received and made the experience so personal for both of us.

Fantastic food of such high quality and variety overseen by a most charming and very experienced Food & Beverage Manager and his team who seemed to remember everyone by their first name (thanks Michel!). If you can drag yourself away from the culinary delights on offer the game/wilderness drives ,walks and visit to the ancient rock art (by the San tribe and several thousand years old) are worthwhile and should be undertaken. We (and a small group of other guests) were assigned a ranger for the entire duration of our stay who looked after us very well - thanks Dave!).

However it is also a place where you can set your own agenda and just relax at the lodge, have a swim in the refreshing rock pools or a visit to the spa (which we availed of twice and well worth it). Only one very small item we noticed was that our lodge surprisingly had no dressing table or chest of drawers but it was no real inconvenience as we stored all our bits & pieces in the wardrobe!

All in all a most wonderful experience with extras such as wines for lunch/dinner very reasonable and a choice range to suit all tastes. It is a stunning landscape and I won't spoil it for you but the special dining experience was also very memorable. We shall return some day hopefully sooner rather than later!

Room Tip: Lodges facing the river bed and mountain were great but I doubt that you will be disappointed with t...

This place is sublime. A shangri-la in the wilderness of Africa. Such a cleverly designed place. They have thought of everything. Accommodation in lodge type houses around some beautiful lakes and scenery. The dining experiences are second to none. The allocation of a guide (we had Simone who was clever, articulate and fun) to each guest feels really special and we loved the trips out to the cave art paintings and to see the animals in the wilderness. Sundowners in the African landscape - wow, just wonderful moments. But the extra layer was the family atmosphere of the staff, all called by their first names - they all seemed so happy. Thank you so much for giving us a trip of a lifetime.

We have just spent 2 nights at this amazing place and finally got to relax after a hectic 2 weeks travelling around South Africa. Our room was enormous as was the fabulous bathroom. Our guide Simone was excellent as were all the other staff we met. The food was delicious and we were lucky enough to eat in Embers, their mountain dining area on our first night which was a fantastic experience, eating under the stars with candles everywhere so you could see. There are several swimming pools spread about over the resort and most of the time we had the pool nearest our room to ourselves. It was bliss to just relax and watch all the birds going about their daily business. We enjoyed the evening game drives including sundowners out on the reserve and the early morning drive to see the rock art. We cycled down to the dam and had a leisurely paddle in the canoes around the reservoir. We also did one of the hiking trails and came across a group of zebra, I'm not sure who was more surprised us or them. This place is simply perfect.

It’s extremely rare to find a truly world-class venue and service in combination, but Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat, under the outstanding stewardship of James and Dee Basson, certainly fits and exceeds that bill. A most memorable and serene hideaway for those extra special celebrations where the Bushmans Kloof Team goes way out of their way to ensure a magical blend of excellence, outstanding cuisine, superlative service, and all at a palatable premium price for this uniquely personalized and special experience. Nothing is too much trouble, and the positive, co-operative, and pleasant attitude permeates from the top. You will not regret spoiling yourself.

Yes, the game experience is not Big 5 (and Bushmans Kloof does not claim to be such), but the nature guides and the topography more than compensate. This coupled with the mix of other activities available, the beautifully rugged and serene surroundings are highly, highly recommended, and the Wellness Spa setting and treatments are out of this world!

A very big thank you James, Dee, and your truly outstanding Team of hospitality excellence. You’ve opened an exciting new chapter in our extensive global travels!

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe room semi-suites

We have just left the most delightful, relaxing and charming place and already wish to return. Set in astonishing red- gold sandstone mountains, this oasis of peace, beauty and calm was everything and more that we could have wished for. All combined to make it memorable: morning walks to see fascinating bushman rock art, swimming, reading, being pampered in the lovely Spa or being shown a walled garden crammed with olive and citrus trees, herbs and roses, then an evening drive looking at antelope of every kind, the fynebos bush in which to savour a sundowner. Thank you James, Dee and the superb staff who made us feel so welcome.

Room Tip: Choose a deluxe room if staying longer than a couple of nights

Our fifth time at Bushmans - this time for ten days, and it should have been longer. It is THE place to be just doing 'nothing', revitalise and wonder why life isn't always like this.
The location is stunning, the Team looking after you is quite superb, friendly and efficient; the food is excellent; accommodation extremely comfortable - we struggle to find all the words to say how excellent this place is.
We'll be back next year, most likely for longer!
Thank you to all the Team.

Room Tip: All rooms are good; River Side is outstanding.
