My wife & I wanted to have a few days break away from the city before we headed back to work. We were impressed by the Clanwilliam Lodge website & were taken by the day-beds at the pool so made the booking for 3 nights.
Clanwilliam is a one-horse town in the middle of nowhere. It has a good Spar where one can get all food stuffs and toiletries; as well as three decent but expensive restuarants. As there isn't much nearby Clanwilliam either, we spent a fair amount of time at the lodge.
Our standard room was small and not quite up to scratch in terms of cleanliness (stains on sheets the main problem). The bathroom has an open-plan shower which wets most of the bathroom, but is mopped up twice a day. Rooms come with kettle, tea and coffee, as well a a small fridge with bottled water on arrival. Aircon was great in the heat, but double bed in standard room was a bit small. TV offers the free-to-air stations (SABC 1,2,3, ETV) as well as a Supersports chanel and one movie channel (MMII). Bathroom was a separate with a door, not open-plan into the bedroom as our booking sheet advised, so not sure what to expect in other rooms.
Breakfast was included but dismal. Tea & Coffee on tap, bread / toast (no pastries), a few yogurts, minimal fruit, 2 cold meats, only one cereal in the 2-cereal dispenser (on all three mornings) - these items were buffet. Eggs and bacon were available on order or an omlette, but no fried tomato / mushrooms, etc. Although dining room was always quiet, tablecloths were dirty and tables not properly replenished with cutlery. We had dinner at the hotel once which while enjoyable, was very slow and over-priced (most dishes from R80) even by Cape Town standards. Service was lacking & staff didn't know much about the meals and were not able to offer the service to match prices.
The pool and day-beds were great & we lapped up the sun as well as enjoying service from the bar which was nearby to the pool.
While we enjoyed getting away from it all and were happy to spend 3 days at the lodge, we would recommend it only if you had to go to Clanwilliam or had to pass through the town, not as a destination. Also, do not expect the twin palm trees - the right tree must have been photoshopped in photos as in real life, the heights are totally different and it is leafless.
