“Simple accommodation, but a great experience and recommended”
Reviewed February 27, 2010

Warmwaterberg is located east of Barrydale on the R62, and makes a great overnight stopping place for a leisurely and more interesting journey to the Garden Route from Cape Town than the direct (and a bit dull) N2. (Suggest the R45 route through Franschhoek up to Worcester, along the R60 / R62 to Oudtshoorn and drop down through the Outeniqua pass into George)

Although mainly a camping site, several wooden cabins can be rented, and there is some further accommodation available in the main house. We stayed in one of the inexpensive cabins - fairly basic and spartan, but featured a well equipped kitchen.

The main attraction of Warmwaterberg is that it is built on the site of natural hot springs, and there are three swimming pools of differing temperatures for you to relax in and soak away the dust of your journey through the arid valleys of R62. Don't forget your trunks!

There is a restaurant on-site which has beautiful views across the Little Karoo to the mountains beyond, and serves simple but delicious home made food at amazingly reasonable prices. At the time of writing, a bottle of wine from the restaurant is less than £3 - it'd be more expensive to bring your own!

Its remote location off the beaten track and away from any population centres also means that if you are blessed with a clear night the view of the stars is quite spectacular, with the dust clouds in the Milky Way being very visible.

In summary then, we greatly enjoyed our overnight stay here and swim in the hot springs, and would further recommend the restaurant even if you were just passing through - it's a lovely spot to eat!
