Description: Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

“An Oasis on the road to Cape Town”
Reviewed February 3, 2014

Heading back to Cape Town from Oudtshoorn, we decided it was time for some lunch and found this charming 'country' cafe recommended by Tripadvisor. What a treat! Built on a watering hole on the family farm, the 'homemade' meals live up to their reputation. Be sure to drop in if you are in the area and enjoy the ambience of country life and the delicious food.

Dont miss the Blue Cow if you visit Barrydale. Kids will love to feed the fish and the food great. Cappucino is yummi yummi. Nice hand made toys for the small children.

“Cute venue in the middle of nowhere”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

We were looking for a place for lunch in Barrydale after driving for hours on the Route 62. We must admit that we felt very disappointed by the town itself: the city centre made us feel extremely miserable and we wondered whether we shouldn't proceed and look for a different place. However we were too hungry to drive any further and decided to have a look at Trip Advisor for some tips on a venue for lunch. The owner is very mice and welcoming, we ordered a sandwich (ham and cheddar cheese) and a greek salad: both of them were tasty, the salad dressing was lovely (accompanied with chickpeas and some dried seeds that made it a lovely dish). We were impressed of the bill: only about R140 including salad, toast, two americanos and gratuity - great value for money.
Overall we do not recommend to stop in Barrydale, however should you be so hungry and tired that you can't drive any further without a quick and relaxed break, you'd better go to The Blue Cow and enjoy a light and fresh meal.
