Description: Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

“Great name for a inland restaurant.”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

Heading from George to Stellenbosch a out a 5 hour drive.
Saw sign on the highway BLUE COW RESTAURANT BY THE WATERFRONT, wondered where the waterfront could be in Barrydale, so had to go and have a look.
The waterfront is a fish filled pond with several ducks. Don't expect anything flashy its an ordinary looking building. There is an indoor seating area and a wooden deck with tables and chairs overlooking the pond and valley with the mountains as a back drop. It's so peaceful. As soon as you sit down they give you 2 slices of bread to feed the ducks. A friendly little place. We just had coffee with a fresh warmed bran muffin and apple pie where the plate was decorated with dusted icing sugar cow. I can definitely recommend the pie. The owner was so friendly and warm she recommend that we not leave South Africa without trying Snoek (fish) and rooibos tea, apparently they make a Red Cappucino out of it and she says it is divine.
If passing go and try as the sign says out the front 'you will be pleasantly surprised'

“Great stopover...”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

We were just like many other people. The place was recommended to us and we stopped over on our way from Oudtshoorn to Montagu.
It's well worth the turn off from the R62. We had a coffee and a cheese platter. The quality was good and the service fine.
The view on their verandah is worth experiencing and the "water" is a nice touch.
Toilets are clean and so it's a almost perfect stopover.

“A delightful coffee stop”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

We were recommended by a friend to visit and were not disappointed. The staff were so friendly and we were able to sample some delicious cakes and cheesecake together with delicious coffee. We sat outside overlooking the pond and watched the Koi fish and if we had not been en route to Oudtshoorn we would definitely have returned another day. Do look out for this lovely coffee, lunch or tea stop on your travels you won't be disappointed.

“A great lunch stop”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

We were looking for a halfway lunch stop for our journey between Oudtshoorn and Plettenberg Bay and I saw this suggested on a website post. The restaurant looks a bit unpromising from the outside but was a good as suggested by others. We sat on the terrace overlooking the fish pond which is full of carp and the owner gave my kids bread to feed them whilst we were waiting for the food. The food was really good and I'm really glad we stopped here.

“Best Cheesecake in a lovely setting”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

Stopped over recently for a quick break on the road between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn. Excellent cheesecake and generous cappucino served on a lovely wooden deck overlooking a dam surrounded by trees with weaver bird nests. My daughter was given some bread to feed the Koi fishes, while waiting for our order to arrive. This will be our regular stopover from now on and almost seems worth a trip from Cape Town on it's own.
