Description: Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

With a slogan like ' view of the waterfront' in inland Barrydale, it was curiousity more than anything else that allured us. Overlooking a pond.. the view from their deck on to the mountains surrounding barrydale are lovely. What a lovely little find. A small coffee shop/restaurant with a very simple yet fresh menu. Except a few toasted sarmies, salads, quiches and a choice of delicious freshly baked cakes of the day. Another high point, it is off the busy main R62 where most people stop. well worth the 2 minute detour to avoid the tourist traps.

Driving along R62 from Oudtshoorn to Montague, we were fascinated by the name "Blue Cow " cafe on our approach to Barrydale. In need of a coffee break we called in and are so pleased that we did. An extremely friendly welcome and fabulous setting, the decking overhangs a pond teaming with carp, it is idyllic. The coffee and scones were also first class.
We will certainly be calling here again when next on the R62.

Fabulous drive on Route62. We stopped off at the Blue Cow for a break and we are so glad we chose this particular cafe. It exceeded our expectations of a quick coffee.

Hard to choose from all the deliciously baked cakes. My husband had hot apple pie and ice cream and I had lemon meringue pie, both baked that morning. I don't usually eat desert and my hubby was disappointed that I wolfed down all of the pie, I usually only eat a bit and he gets to finish off the rest!

The setting is beautiful, sitting by the lake and feeding the carp with bread provide by the lovely owner was so relaxing. We were sorry we were only passing through.

We were heading towards Cape Town, this was the first sign we came to and stopped. We are so glad we were travelling in this direction as when we left we passed a lot of eateries on the main road which we would ordinarily have stopped at. So lucky we didn't. The owner is so friendly and welcoming and the food delicious. Full lunches available as well as cakes and scones etc.

We will definitely go out of our way to visit this place again when we next come to SA.
