Description: Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

Came across the Blue Cow entirely by accident, we were warmly welcomed by Annette, who has great passion for her food and ingredients, loved chatting to her and loved her food just as much. Sometimes it's nice to make a discovery without the help of trip advisor and therefore without any expectation and then find others enjoyed it just as much.

Very slow service and relatively high prices, although I did enjoy the lemon meringue pie. Fantastic view and you can watch the ducks swim in the dam, very relaxing

Driving into Barrydale did not seem an enticing experience (sorry to the locals, perhaps we didn't see the best bits).

Intrigued by the signs we did wonder if we were heading the right way but stick with it and you will be rewarded.

We stopped for a lovely coffee and superb scone. Whilst at the same time we could enjoy the great views. On the day we went we decided to sit outside there was a cold wind blowing and my wife was kindly offered a blanket to keep warm.

So if you are travelling through the Karoo on your to Ronnie's World Famous Sex shop put this on your list of places to stop at.

A great stop for lunch, stunning views and great home made food, in particular the bread. Great to chat too. All in all a perfect pit stop. The weaver birds were fun too.

The food was good home cooked food. The kids had a ball feeding the fish, the ducks and the geese. This is a good lunch stop on route62.
