“Would have loved to stay longer!”
Reviewed August 7, 2011

This is the ideal spot to relax whilst exploring the attractions along Route 62.
Warm hospitality and equally warm fireplaces welcomed us upon arrival. We especially loved the decor, and the tastefully furnished rooms. We had good times in the bar, enjoying drinks in good company. The "Mez" restaurant was also a highlight, providing an intimate Mediterranean setting and excellent cuisine.
Please maintain this "old world" jewel the way it is!

Thank you!
Yes we agree that a stay of two or hopefully three nights are required to best experience the hotel and Barrydale . Please do so next time!

Decided to sleep in Barrydale on our way to Warmwaterberg and a friend suggested Barrydale Karoo Hotel. What a pleasant surprise to be upgraded to the spacious Garden Suite with lovely bathroom and massive shower because it was my birthday! Had a very cozy and romantic dinner at the eclectic Mez restaurant with excellent waiters and watched a Giant Kingfisher hunting the koi in the pond right outside our window the next morning. Bird-watching from bed - a first for us!
Thank you for the excellent and friendly service Nastasja, Bruce and Desmond.
I will definitely tell all my friends to visit.

Room Tip: Garden Suite with own little patio and fish pond is lovely.

I would highly recommend the Barrydale Karoo Hotel situated in the heart of the Route 62. The hotel is as unique as its surroundings; a real gem of South Africa and the Western Cape specifically. Design-wise, the hotel is chic and funky, but maintains this with country elegance and flair.

Our room was very comfortable - crisp percale linen and excellent quality mattresses. Something small (but of significance to one's comfort the next morning!) - the pillows are very good indeed!

The staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful, from the time we arranged our booking to the time we checked out, everything ran smoothly. One definitely gets the feeling that the staff go out of their way to ensure that you leave as a friend. This is a welcome difference to the larger, more corporate hotels! Nastassja, Bruce, Lisle-Ann, Desmond and everyone else were always on hand to recommend restaurants, walking trails and just to offer general advice for our stay in Barrydale.

Breakfasts followed the country-style Route 62 trend - hearty and of super quality. We also had an exceptional dinner at the restaurant based on site, Mez, where we thoroughly enjoyed Mediterranean style food. The chef, Michelle, as well as her staff also offered us outstanding service and attention to detail.

We look forward to another stay at this establishment, and would suggest it to anyone - South African or foreign - visiting this incredible route.

Thank you for your great feedback! Yes the R62 is a fantastic route - so much better to use this road if you are on your way to or back from the Garden Route , than the boring N2. Please visit again - we have brought about numerous other improvements since your visit!

A Gem of a hotel that is completely unlike any other hotel that I have stayed in. Wonderful collection of off-beat art and books. A treasure chest for the observant. The staff are ultra friendly and rooms very comfortable. Plenty to do in the village and for the foodies - make sure that you eat at Mez.

Yes we understand the central importance of good food in a country hotel - and an excellent wine list! We think you will like it even more now - we have fine-tuned it more, and look forward to see you soon again.

Spent a fabulous 50th birthday weekend at the Barrydale Hotel. Wow! The decor is eclectic and quirky, visual treats and surprises around every corner. Saying goodbye to the staff on Sunday evening had a tinge of sadness as I felt as if I was parting from my country cousins. When Theo the owner discovered it was my 50th he insisted on opening a bottle of good bubble with a large ceremonial sword. All round -wonderful service, friendly staff, scrummy country food, charming rooms and great coffee. I still can't think of a better place to leap over the half centuary barrier than the "Barrydale Karoo Hotel"

We stayed in the spectacular garden suite just after the new owner Theo had taken over the hotel.

We received the royal treatment: one of the most beautiful rooms I've ever stayed in, goose down duvets, all amenities, a beautiful private garden with a water feature and excellent service - and very good coffee.

Locals and visitors assemble at the hotel bar daily - fantastic selection of spirits and a wine list that would leave many sommeliers jealous - particularly laudable is the fact that local wines (Barrydale region) are offered. We were lucky enough to enjoy a live music gig on the Saturday night...

The breakfast was very delicious. Theo the owner was omnipresent- making us feel at home.

We will go back. I have subscribed to the hotel's Facebook page which details specials, live music gigs and other exciting events. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the Karoo.

Room Tip: Try to book the garden suite - you will leave with a very 'zen' feeling
