Dunkeld Country Estate
Reviewed May 2, 2012

The Dunkeld Country Estate is a lovely location with 13 or more trout fishing dams, beautiful gardens, endless cycling\mountain biking trails, fantastic horse riding and tranquil game viewing.

I noticed that the hotel and the self-catering units are graded as four star by the South African tourism council however the self-catering unit we stayed in was 3 star at a push. The bathrooms are in need of refurbishment, with both the shower and bath leaking all over the floor, the units are poorly maintained, the sleeper couch and the microwave was broken and the house-keeping was non-existent on the Sunday we were there and generally very poor. The entire stay they did not replenish the toilet paper and bathroom amenities.

We stayed there for four nights and ate at the hotel restaurant for one breakfast and one dinner. The breakfast buffet is ordinary and for R100 per person we were disappointed that we did not see smoked salmon, swiss emmentaler cheese and some imported cold meat on the buffet. The dinner was slightly better albeit we ordered prawn curry and were surprised that the prawns were cooked in their shells with the head on in a coconut milk curry sauce. The flavour was good however this should not be listed a traditional prawn curry on the menu.

The horse riding was excellent and Fiona was fantastic. She took our 3 year old and his friend on numerous horse rides which they really enjoyed. Overall the trip was very good, Dunkeld is the ideal retreat in Dullstroom, when traveling with a three year old and a newborn. There is room for improvement (especially the house keeping) but we thoroughly enjoyed our time hence my rating very good as appose to average.

Room Tip: Room 31 is a great self-catering unit overlooking the dam, however, due to the forest next to it, it...

The weekend away at Dunkeld Country Estate was relaxing and a pleasure. The staff are friendly and will go out of their way to assist. We stayed in one of the hotel rooms which are very comfortable esp. with the fireplace. The food is basic country type cooking but still enjoyable. A wonderful time away and we will be back to try the self-catering units which are beautifully appointed on the lakes

The wine list could be extended as it is limited.

My first stay at Dunkeld Country Estate was rather pleasant. We hired out a single room self-catering unit , the place was clean and had all the basic amenities required. The bed was comfortable and heavy curtains allowed us to sleep in a little.
The view from our room was lovely, an absolutely tranquil setting. And the entertainment area offered hours of fun with the pool table and table tennis.

After such a good visit we decided to go back a year later and being avid horse-riders, take in a scenic trail on horse back.
The experience was not great.
One of the stirrups on my saddle was broken, providing an exceptionally uncomfortable and no-doubt unsafe ride.
The guide was kind enough to let us take a scenic route on our second booking. A nice change of scenery for us and the horses, I think.

My major disappointment was the fact that once the ride was over the horses were sent off to graze pouring with sweat, with their saddles still attached to their backs. We asked when the next ride was and the stable caretaker informed us it was a couple hours later!

Leaving the horses un-hosed down, with their saddles like that seemed wholely unfair. A great deal more care and respect should be shown for these magnificent animals, which clearly was not happening at Dunkeld. A very sad thing to see - the trip was hugely dampened with that experience.

Hopefully Dunkeld will increase the quality of care and appropriately train the stable staff to make the riding experience a pleasant one for everyone involved, people and horses alike. This would most likely encourage visitors to use the service!

Dear Campanini,

Thank you for your review. We are currently revising our online presence and are finally responding to our TripAdvisor Reviews. In order to be thorough, we are going back in time to address each and every one, so please accept our apologies for taking so long to come back to you. We took the liberty of asking our new Equestrian Manager, Bridgid du Preez, to respond directly to your review.

As the new Equestrian Manager for Dunkeld, I have recently been employed to look after the well-being of the Estate’s amazing horses. A lot of things have changed for the better. We have enforced a very strict program for the horses. We have equipped the horses with decent tack and have trained the grooms on the care of the horses and tack. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised with the new changes that have taken place. We would love to invite you back to have an amazing experience with our horses. I would love you to come and meet our new Warm bloods (Callaho, Saratoga and Alzu Bloodlines) at the New Equestrian Centre. If you have a passion for horses you will love the overall picture of top class horses and perfect scenery. We have a new 2 – 3 hour Advance Outride. Please let me know when you are visiting the area again so you can join me on a complimentary Trail Ride.

We had an awesome time at Dunkeld Country Estate in Dullstroom. The chalets are spacious and clean with amazing views of the many little dams and ponds on the estate. A roaring fire and a nice glass of wine is exactly what we needed to make this weekend so enjoyable. There are loads of activities for children (and grown-ups) Fishing, horseback riding and shopping trips to the very close dullstroom. All in all this was a really fabulous place to spend a nice family weekend away from the hussle and bussle of the city. thanks

My family and I spend two nights in a self catering unit at Dunkeld. The unit was superb, catering for all our needs as a family.
Me and my wife both did some flyfishing and it was a bit to easy to catch fish. I saw fish that had scars due to wrong handling and some of the dams large schools of fish was visible, maybe a bit over populated, with bettter management of the fishing waters as well as the people fishing, it could be an excellent fishing destination.
The entertaiment centre has a wonderful heated pool that was enjoyed by the whole family.
The highlite of my 3 year old daughter's trip was the horse riding.
Our overall experience was wonderful and I would defenitely return!

Room Tip: Woodlands no. 2 Very private and secluded, right next to a beatiful dam

We stayed here two times on two separate occasions in august/september. The staff was really friendly. The rooms were clean and nice, but too cold even with the heat on, and I'm not to fond of carpet floors in hotels. The food was great, and waiters very friendly. The estate is beautiful, but as the rest of Dullstroom you feel like you're in Europe, not in Africa.
