“The Blue Swallow and Bill are Cool......”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2010

I had a great stay! This place is got in all categories if you are into the 50's or hot rods or Motorcycles.Ideal place for motorcycle travelers rooms with garages,Artwork from local artists on the walls and the rooms are like straight out of the fifties. sitting outside in the wonderful NM climate surfing the net was a great night. I slept with my door open it was so nice. Definetly a must for all travelers but Brothers of the wind and two wheels this is the place. And Bill was a great guy with a really cool Bicycle. Right on Bill !!! I will see you again my friend.

This place, built in the 40's I believe, was featured in the Pixar movie Cars. The neon sign is impressive but that's where it stops. The rooms are run down, very old and dirty. There was some question as to if the sheets where actually changed. The owner was a nice guy and very helpful to his guests.

Hello! My wife Nancy and I purchased the Blue Swallow in July of 2011, and we have worked hard to make sure that the place not only offers a historic experience, but a great night's sleep! While I have made repairs to the sign and other neon, it isn't just about the sign, but the entire experience of a bygone era of travel. We have new beds with new bedding that are the most comfortable on the road anywhere. Plush towels, luxury organic bathroom amenities, and excellent housekeeping add to the personal comfort, while additional period artwork, and vintage lighting enhance the historic character. We believe the atmosphere is unique and pleasant.

If you ever get this way on Route 66 again, please stop in and see us, and consider trying us out again. You won't be disappointed!

Thank you,
Kevin & Nancy Mueller

I had gone with my sweetie the previous year on my birthday and we went back in June for another couple nights of rest and relaxation. It was as nice as the first time we went.

Bill and Teri are just the nicest people. In the morning when I'd go outside to have my cigarette Bill would take that as a "coffee needed" sign and bring me a cup of coffee to give to my sweetie.

Everyone who wants to have a true Route 66 experience must stay at the Blue Swallow. The rooms are very clean and the "flavor" of the "Mother Road" really come to life here. The neon sign, the neon decorations around the court, and the friendliness of Bill and Terri are not to be missed. Thanks goodness someone has preserved this piece of Americana for us all.

This is a friendly place. The rooms are small, as they were built back then, but tidy and comfortable. Each room has a garage, but unless you have a motorcycle or a mini, your car is unlikely to fit. The motel has as many of the original fixtures as possible, though some rooms were outfitted with taller showerheads for big galoots like me. Our room was immaculate. Check out the murals in some of the garages. Not original, but fun to see. The owner was friendly and helpful.

With regard to the reviewer that said this place was not well kept because of rust stains on the sink, I am compelled to point out that rust stains on a sink are a sign of a leaky faucet in the past. I personally would rather see the original sink, rust stains and all, than to have the sink replaced. (By the way, my sink had no rust stains and the room was immaculate) If you want "50's style" accommodations, go to some of many of the new establishments that have sprung up along the route that look like the 50's in a Disneyesque way. If you want to stay in a hotel that is pretty much as it was in the 30's and 40's, stay here. This is the real deal.

BTW, there is WIfi that reaches to the rooms. My room was in the corner, so I had to position my laptop towards the lobby building. It was acceptably fast and stable. This isn't the reason you'd stay at a place like this, but if like me you need to stay on top of business, it is very helpful.

Ignore the hatchet job posted by the "seasoned traveler" who mysteriously managed to be the only person on TripAdvisor to find an unsatisfactory room at the Blue Swallow. I visit Tucumcari frequently (at least three or four times a year, and more often if I can swing it) and stay at the Blue Swallow on every trip. My first stay at the Swallow was in 2001; the last time I was there was yesterday morning, when I said a reluctant goodbye and checked out at the end of another comfortable stay. Are there minor rust spots in the sinks? Yes. That's what 1939 sinks look like after 71 years of continuous use. Are there minor cracks in some of the bathroom tiles? Yes. That's what 1939 tiles look like after 71 years of continuous use. The owners could tear out the sinks and showers and replace them with McFixtures from a big-box store, but they have better sense than that. The Blue Swallow is on the National Register of Historic Places. It does not look like a Motel 6. It looks like a lovingly maintained, meticulously preserved mom-and-pop tourist court from the heyday of Route 66. There is no such thing as a dirty room at the Blue Swallow. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise simply isn't telling the truth. There is no such thing as a $20-a-night room at the Blue Swallow, either -- which might explain the lone negative review. There are plenty of cheap rooms to be had in Tucumcari, but you get what you pay for. If you want a place to pick up a hooker or sleep off a hangover, you go to one of the $20-a-night flophouses down the road. If you want a room that came out of a cookie cutter, you go to one of the chains next to the interstate. If you want a rendezvous with the history of the Mother Road, you go to the Swallow, and you pay $60 or so for a chance to spend an evening sleeping between soft, immaculate linens, with echoes of the past floating over you on the high desert breeze that whispers through 71-year-old casements. And if you don't like something about your room, you tell the owners, who live on the property and take immense pride in its history and its well-deserved reputation as the crown jewel of Route 66.

My husband Stan and I stayed at the Blue Swallow Aug 14 amd 15 with our young grandson Rylie. Terri and Bill are great. We loved being able to set out side in the evening after a day of sightseeing. The rooms are a great throwback to anther time and the rooms are comfortable and clean.

Bill and Terri-thanks for making our stay one of the highlights of our trip to New Mexico.
