“Good stay At KOA Tucumcari”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

We had two blow outa on I40 and were actually towed into this campground on a tow truck. We called in advance and the owners were very welcoming. They gave us the biggest pull through site which enabled the tow truck to get us in place and propped up on wood for the night. The next day we got breakfast from the little café - it was great value - tasted good and was plentiful. The owners could not have been more helpful throughout our stay. The sites were level - plenty of space in between and views over the countryside. We did not hear any noise from I40 and it was great to be able to visit the town whilst our RV was repaired the next day. This was a good space to spend the night whilst travelling on I40 - we ended up here 2 nights due to the RV repairs and would stay here again in travelling in this area.

Your options are limited in the area, so KOA is probably the best you can do. The good news is they welcome tent campers and have a good-enough place for you to go. It is just an open spot, but it's a large spot and there are funky little sun shades everywhere if you want one.

This is desert country, so don't expect a lush lawn. However, the office staff is both efficient and way friendly. They do not make tenters feel like step children like some RV parks do. They were free with advice where to eat, even though they serve meals on site if that is your choice.

I would describe this KOA as the rest stop on our trip while crossing New Mexico. Nothing exceptional just average here. When we arrived the store was closed and we had to ring a bell to call the owner who gave us a friendly welcome when he showed up. The site we had had a tree positioned which prevented us from opening our awning. The water quality was cloudy (O2 Saturation), Showers were clean and adequate, Cable had 12 channels and clear. We didn't use WIFI. Kathy served breakfast in the morning which was average. The highlight for this location was a visit to the old route 66 town of Tucumcari and Tucumcari Ranch Supply. When in the area we would stay here again and revisit the town. Out of all the KOA's we stayed at this KOA we give our lowest rating although it is adequate.

Room Tip: RV'ers may want to check site for trees that may prevent opening awnings or slides.

This KOA is adjacent to the I40 (hence there is some traffic noise) and is quite easy to get to. It is a few miles outside town and like most of the town, it has a very run down feel to it. Pitches are gravely sand surrounded by some rather reluctant grass and weeds. There are a few trees but they provide little shade. Most pitches have long views over the surrounding countryside (it is nice to be able to see out). Toilets are clean but tired, the games room was open but most equipment was switched off (not that we would have wanted to use it). We were checked in efficiently to a camp site which was barely ¼ full. The owners provide a food service (we did not need to use it). There is cable on the more expensive pitches but our RV TV system managed to receive a number of channels. Wifi is quite good and worked most of the time. There is an on-site dump but when we used it, it overflowed. When one compares this KOA to others at the same price, it offers a poor deal but there are none any better in town (in fact the others look far worse). So unless you have to stay here, my advice would be to press on to Santa Rosa if traveling west.
