I'm an active duty Marine who was traveling cross country from Virginia. Tired and hungry, I pulled into Tucumcari looking for a place to bed down for the night. Calling back home to Virginia, asked my wife to choose for me where to stay...she said, "Honey, you gotta stay at Motel Safari! Trust me!" She couldn't have been more right. A vintage Route 66 hotel so well put together that it made me wonder how fun those decades must have been. This place was spotless, extremely cozy (beds, license, and pillows were just incredible), and run by a wonderful family genuinely concerned about your comfort and visit to not only their Motel, but to the gem of a city that is Tucumcari. And wouldn't you know it, the owner is also a Marine. I thoroughly enjoyed the warm conversation on the patio, and as Marines typically do, enjoy a nice cold beverage and sharing stories. I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay traveling to my new duty station in San Diego...give them a try, you won't be disappointed! Semper Fidelis...

We pulled into Motel Safari after driving for 14 hours and were greeted warmly and were shown our room. Friendly service and very helpful in letting us know where to have a nice meal. The sign says "The Best Bed's in Town" is no lie, they were FANTASTIC, very comfortable and the room was pleasent to stay in and clean, we enjoyed our overnight stay. Were are going to try to make it a permanent stop over any time we travel to or from Arizona if possible in making the proper reservations.

A friend and I were flying cross-country in a small single-engine airplane when we were stranded by an approaching storm. Landing at the Tucumcari Airport, a quick call got us a room and a free ride from the owner from the airport to the hotel. At first glance the town looked a little run down, but the quality of the room impressed us, much to our relief. The owner was very friendly and courteous and the price was very reasonable. The experience made me glad to be grounded on historic route 66. Thanks again!

My husband and I are New Yorkers. And true to our species, we are notoriously picky and quick to complain. Don't usually have time for reviewing. In fact it took a month to post this. But Motel Safari impressed us. So here goes:
Pros:
Clean...With really great linens. Freshly changed daily.
Comfortable...With pillow-top Posturepedics on par with four-star hotels in Albquerque
Historic Rt. 66 Flair...The Murals, the Galaxie, the Cool Camel sign, the lounge chairs
21st century conveniences...WiFi, flat screens, retro-fit radio/CD player
Reasonably priced...about $50 a night.
And the best two innkeepers you could hope for...Richard and Gail can tell you where to eat...Kix 66 for breakfast! Secret recipe pancakes and hash browns to die for. What not to miss...the Dino Museum and the colossal wind turbine@Mesalands, Ute Lake and Tee-pee Curios. And over a bottle of wine, they shared a sunset with us.
Their only competition is the Blue Swallow, whose kitsch is the coolest but if you like your retro with a modern twist...Go Motel Safari!
Cons:
It could use a few more well-placed outlets for charging up. And yes the A/C is loud.

Our stay at the Motel Safari was first rate. Rooms were clean and the beds were very comfortable. But the hospitality of the owners was more than first rate. My vehicle battery died in their parking lot so the owners gave us a jump start to help me diagnose our problem. They offered help at every turn. We were able to get a new battery from a nearby repair shop and be on our way the next morning. We thank Gail and her husband for their help and hospitality.

We drive to Taos twice a year from Dallas and Tucumcari is a natural sleep-over spot for us. We choose the MS on a whim and were delighted. Impeccably clean, updated, super comfortable beds and plush towels for a bargain price.

The only downside was the heater which was a bit loud. We just turned it off and slept under the warm comforter.

We will make this our regular stop in the future.
