“A very nice surprise!”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

The Fire Water Lodge was recommended to my wife and I for a great getaway. It was described to me as being very, "rustic." I can tell you that if you are looking for luxury and 4 or 5 stars lodging this is not it. In fact I think they purposely try not to be. And believe me this a good thing! If you are looking for a romantic, laid back place to rest and relax, then look no further. My wife and I stayed in the Cactus Room, #9 which was small but good enough for two. It has a small kitchenette, two separate toilets, one with a shower. A small sitting area with a TV and a separate bedroom with a queen bed. We both found the bed to be on the hard side but not unbearably so. The courtyard was very quaint and provided a great place to socialize with other guests. Now the huge tub in a separate room that has been upgraded in wonderful and because it is private a great way to soak with someone special. The water at somewhere between 101 and 110 degrees was hot but soothing. We went on a our first moderate hike together and came back to this tub and just soaked the day and quite frankly alot of work hours away. Damien is a very gracious host and takes pride in what he built there. The Italian restaurant, Bella Lucca is very good although you might say it is some what pricey. The little deli, (Happy Belly Deli) attached to the lodge is a great place to have breakfast. T or C is a town where the simple life is very prevalent. The stores seemed to only open for a few hours and the one theater in town may have one showing in the evening. This is truly a place where come to unplug and unwind especially with your loved one. We plan on going back very soon.

Room Tip: We did get to see another room called the Datura and that had a king bed and probably a better layou...

We were looking for a retreat to get away from the pouring rain on the last day of our vacation. We looked up the reviews for hot springs (T or C) NM and decided to try it but only on the condition that the waters were INSIDE the room. Fire Water Lodge looked very iffy from the outside but after crossing the very funky courtyard and observing the eclectic furnishings we were surprised to find a very nice room and most importantly a huge tub with the 110 degree mineral waters flowing right in.!!!! It is not your run of the mill hotel. Not luxury either. A very comfortable bed and basic southwest style furniture, coffee maker and good towels. There were light bathrobes for each of us . We asked for a change of room when we discovered the AC did not work, it kept shutting off. Immediately the night manager, Dawn, moved us to another room which was an upgrade. The Datura 7. In future we will return and we will stay in that room definitely. Other hotels have the baths outside and limit your time. We got in a few times at night and again in the morning before leaving. Woah it was so relaxing. Oh and breakfast at the nearby bagel shop was included and yummy. You should not miss the Fire Water Lodge. It is worth the price.

Room Tip: Check that your windows do not face the parking lot.

Since 2007, we've been going to Firewater Lodge for extended weekends as often as possible. Richard the owner and his son Damien have done a fine job upgrading and adding rooms with private pools and making the courtyard garden very beautiful and welcoming for guests. Having pools in almost every room is a big bonus! Great for having your own mini-retreat or R and R while you do the ArtWalk downtown or go rock-hounding on trails near Turtle Mountain. Walking distance to excellent food at Bella Lucca, Passion Pie, and White Dog Cafe. And the breakfast at Happy Belly Deli is always something to look forward to, gratis. The only problem has been how popular Firewater has become. So, now we book long weekends in our favorite room, with an outdoor pool, almost 3 or 6 months in advance! We've tried a couple other places in TorC when Richard's place hasn't been available. They were fine in other regards, but we always prefer to stay at Firewater even if we have to book a year in advance for birthdays and anniversaries. It's way worth it.

Room Tip: All rooms are unique, but the waterfall room is really cool for filling your tub.

Needing a short escape & overdue for a good long soak, I got lucky and was able to book the Eucalyptus Room (#1) at the Fire Water Lodge. I have always wanted to stay in this room - it is spacious and has it's own, private outdoor hot mineral bath.

The common courtyard area is attractive, and gives guests the opportunity to visit with one another & discuss the charms of T or C. Even though the Fire Water is located on T or C's "busiest" street - Broadway - it is very peaceful and quiet. It is conveniently located; Cafe Bella Luca, T or C's best restaurant, is located behind the Fire Water (excellent Italian food like Grandma made); Happy Belly Deli is located next door (try the Turkey Chile Philly, it's not on the menu). A breakfast bagel from the Deli is included in your room rate; if you want to order something else, the deli applies a $3 credit to your order.

Richard is a warm and welcoming host that is not omnipresent or intrusive. My stay at the Fire Water was very enjoyable!

Room Tip: Most of the rooms have their own private hot springs bath so you can't go wrong.

Never having been to TorC, I found this place on the internet and was exceedingly happy with my choice. We loved it! The Fire Water Lodge had a charmingly retro feel, and, with it's mid-century courtyard, large and airily-eclectic rooms, and heavenly hot spring tubs, it's hard not to feel like you're in some 60's-era road trip movie. What's not to like?

We stayed in the Eucalyptus room, which had room for three and it's own private hot tub and patio. The decor was both funky and homey, giving it a very comfortable feel. And there is nothing like soaking in a tub under the stars.

The staff was super friendly and we learned a lot about the town and what to do from them.

My wife Lori and I chose the Waterfall Room and we loved it. It was peaceful, quiet and very nicely appointed. The tub, with its waterfall was unique and easily fit the two of us. The courtyard right outside our door was a great place to relax and eat lunch in. There is a great Italian restaurant right ehind the lodge and others within walking distance. All in all, Fire Water Lodge was the perfect place to rejuvinate.

My partner and I left the world behind for three days of bliss floating in the outdoor tub in the Eucalyptus room. Between soaks, bike rides along the river, and short hikes around Elephant Butte Lake we reconnected and refocused on each other. The room was clean and neat, staff were friendly and helpful, and the free breakfast was a nice addition. I enjoyed healing benefits from the hydrotherapy. As a hot springs devote, I know this is the highest quality water in comfortable and clean atmosphere. Few places in the world offer geothermal mineral tubs in individual quarters, and this is one of the best, in terms of relaxation and pain relief. The only problem is you have to book early.

Room Tip: Sunflower and Eucalyptus offer outdoor tubs. Agave and Datura are my favorite indoor tubs.
