We dined at La Cocina after being unable to dine at another restaurant that closed suddenly due to kitchen problems, and we did not have access to Trip Advisor at that point, so we were flying blind. I am amazed by the reviews that gave La Cocina excellent or very good. Our experience was very bad. We were seated at a tiny table, which hardly accommodated plates and glasses. The chairs were probably the most uncomfortable seats I have ever tried to sit on; hard as rocks and crafted to not fit the human body. The menu offers some steaks - in gigantic proportions, with one exception - a 6 oz steak, but accompanied by an enchilada, rice, beans, a tortilla, etc.! - but we were not attracted by them. We live in a city with dozens of Mexican restaurants, and knowing that Truth or Consequences is not a largely Hispanic town, we did not opt for the Mexican plates. That left the battered-cod dinners. The small strips of fish were cooked beyond well-done; we ate mostly the piles of onion rings. A salad accompanied this, consisting of limp, shredded iceberg lettuce and some grated cheese, exactly what I cannot say. Our waitress was very pleasant, but seemed not to know much about the wines or where they were kept.
La Cocina is on a hill, but it is far from "Alta Cocina." Next time if we can't get into our restaurant of choice we'll buy something at the grocery store and eat in our room.
