Ranked #13 of 15 Hotels in Taos
Reviewed May 6, 2012

We visited Taos in it's off season on a road trip of New Mexico. The Whitten Inn caught our eye because of it's location close to the old town and the fact that they offered an indoor heated pool. The hotel was only about one third full and we were greeted promptly and cheerfully by the staff. The room was quiet as it was away from the road , the pool was big and warm and the hot tub a good temperature. Breakfast was the usual continental and okay. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: rooms on the second floor are cheaper and quieter cause no one is dancing on your head.

Thank you for your nice review of the hotel. I realize you were here some time ago, but as we have just purchased the hotel, we are replying to all the reviews as part of our transition plan. We are in the process of updating and remodeling the business, both inside and out. All the carpet and furniture is being replaced, as we speak. We are very excited about the outcome, even though we still have a long way to go. You could say, we are a work in progress. Hopefully, if you are ever in the area again, you will come and stay with us again. Thank you again for your review, it was very important to us.

Sincerely,

Diane H.

Very nice people working there, rooms are nothing special. beds are fine for one night but by night 3 and 4 gets hard to sleep on. Very good location stores and restaurants very close its only a 30 minute drive to taos ski valley. I would stay here again.

Thank you for your review. I realize you stayed here quite some time ago, but as we have just purchased the business, we are replying to all the reviews of the past as part of our transition plan. The hotel is in need of a good remodel and update, both inside and out, and that is exactly what we are doing. We are also replacing all the carpet and furniture, along with a deep cleaning and a fresh paint job. All hotels need to do this on a regular basis, it's just part of the hotel business. You might say we are work in progress, and we are very excited about the outcome. Please, the next time you are in the Taos area, come and stay with us. Again, thank you for your review, it was very important to us.

We booked in for one night and liked it enough to stay for a seven day deal. It was large savings over a single night's stay. When we stayed they recently upgraded a lot of the rooms. It was clean and quiet. Everything worked the first time we used them. The free breakfast with waffles was good.
We would stay again.

Room Tip: We took a second floor room to hopefully not hear too much car noise.

We arrived close to 6 pm and saw a nearly empty parking lot. I asked the desk clerk if the place was mostly empty, and she claimed it was not (which was refuted the next morning by another clerk).

The room was fine, clean, but they only provide liquid soap in dispensers on the wall by the sink and in the shower, where it also serves as shampoo.

The free breakfast included make-yourself waffles, but was otherwise a little sparse - no yogurt, eggs, or any kind of protein other than milk.

The Whitten chain has 4 locations, the others are in Texas (2) and South Carolina.

I recently had a four night stay at the Whitten with my 10 y/o daughter for Spring Break. When comparing the overall value to the hotel amenities and service, I have to give the Whitten a very solid score. The Whitten came under new ownership several years ago and you can tell that they are making an effort to improve the overall condition. The indoor pool and hot tub were both double the size of what I would consider normal for this type of property. The pool was heated to the extent that I didn't feel the need to hit the hot tub. It was just that comfortable after a long day of skiing. Since it was Spring Break, the Inn was busy but not so much as to be a detriment to the overall service. The staff was pleasant and the morning breakfast fare was consistent. The staff did a good job of making sure that it was well stocked during the busy periods. Wireless internet is available, while I was kicked off a couple of times, there were several different connections and I was always re-connected in short order. When I hear people complain about internet connections, I would like to remind them that the more expensive the hotel, the more they charge for internet...and here it is free. Finally, for those not wanting to drive up to Ski Valley, the shuttle stops right in front of the hotel and is very convenient. This came in handy when I had a car issue. I would note that the Inn's owner offered to assist my daughter and I by arranging for a ride to the slopes and thereafter we used the shuttle. This was above and beyond the norm in my mind.

Thank you so much for your great review of the hotel. I realize you were here quite some time ago, but as we have just recently purchased the business we are replying to all the reviews of the past as part of our transition plan. It is an older hotel and is in need of many updates and some remodeling both inside and out. We now have full time WIFI, which is a really good thing. The lobby has had a complete makeover, which makes a big difference. All the carpet and furniture is being replaced along with a deep cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. We have a long way to go, you might say we are a work in progress. Hopefully, you will come and stay with us again the next time you are in the Taos area. In my opinion, the Whitten Inn is a good value and good place to stay. Our experience was great. Our children loved the indoor pool, which was warm enough to play in for an hour, thankfully. Our room was very clean, and the bathroom areas were modern and clean. The refrigerator and microwave were really nice to have for our extended stay, and we were able to hook up a portable DVD player to the flat-screen 32" television to watch our movies we brought along. Cable provided four or five dedicated children's channels, also, including Disney and Nickelodian, among the usual other cable channels. The included breakfast each morning was really welcome, with breads, danish, cereals, orange juice, coffee and make-your-own waffles. From our own personal experience, management is conscientious; they care about their guests and want them to have a good experience. If you demand perfection, you are more likely to enjoy the Four Seasons Hotels, but if you value your money and are a little flexible, you'll enjoy the Whitten Inn. We'll definitely be back.
