“A nice surprise!”
Reviewed July 13, 2011

I stumbled across this place while on a roadtrip through New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. At check in the staff seemed to be training, but they were very friendly and helpful. My room was large and clean. My room was at the back end of the motel. The continental breakfast was very good. I will stay here again next time I am in the area! I did not use the pool so I will not comment.

Thank you so much for your kind review. We have just recently purchased the hotel, and as part of our transition plan, we are replying to all the reviews of the past. We are in the process of remodeling and updating the hotel both inside and out. It is an older hotel and we know we have a long way to go, you might say we are a work in progress, and we are very excited about the outcome. Hopefully, you will stay with us the next time you are in the area and let us know how we are doing. Again, thank you for your review, it is so important to us.

Sincerely,

I recently attended a concert in Taos, NM, called Solar Fest. This year featured the band Wide Spread Panic, and we selected this hotel because it was pet friendly. The desk clerks that were working were extremely friendly and nice, and even gave my dog treats. This hotel went above and beyond to make our concert experience the best it could be. They have a beautiful indoor pool on property that is usually scheduled to close at 10 PM, however they let us stay at the pool until 4 AM the next morning. This hotel believes in going above and beyond to serve their guests and make their stay the best it can be.

I have just read your review and am very happy you had such nice things to say. We have just recently purchased the hotel and are in the process of remodeling and updating the hotel, both inside and out. It is an older hotel and there is always work to be done. You will be happy to note, we will still be pet friendly. The pool area has just been updated and looks terrific. We have been in the hotel business for some time and we are very excited about our new endeavor. Hopefully, you will stay with us the next time you are in the area and let us know how we're doing. Again, thank you for your review, it has been very helpful to us.

Sincerely,

We planned a very last minute overnight trip to Taos with our small dog and needed a place that accepted pets. The Sun God Lodge had no pet rooms left and suggested the Whitten Inn. The staff were very nice on the phone and in person and the lobby looked ok, but once we proceeded to the main building I was shocked by how dirty and dingy everything looked. Very run-down and suffering from years of deferred maintenance. The room was painted in a cheerful color scheme and had a decent TV and a lot of pillows for the bed, but the security latch was broken off the front door and the bathroom was tiny and dingy with no window or exhaust fan. Fortunately the other patrons looked like normal people rather than a bunch of cretins, so we at least felt safe. At $90 + $10 pet fee (that I was not told about when I booked) the room was way too expensive for such a dump. I know it's Taos, but I've stayed in other places in Taos and Santa Fe that were clean and a good value. What a shame, particularly because the location is pretty good - close to the plaza - and the north facing rooms have beautiful mountain views. Will not stay here again.

We are very sorry to hear of the trouble you experienced. From the information you provided we did not find a guest comment card alerting us to these conditions. Please call the manager Trisha, and give her your information and when you stayed so we can check into the conditions that you mentioned and also send you a partial refund. After spending $400,000 renovating the hotel it breaks our heart that a guest would call it dingy. Again we apologize for you inconvenience and hope that you will return.

We were pleased to be offered the WEEKLY rate for an 8 day stay. This lowered our rate much lower than any provider and ended up being $39.95 a day!! This included breakfast and maid services. Normally a weekly rate only gets you ONE midweek bed clothes change. The staff was super friendly and caring. We actually met the controversial Mr. Whitten! However, we liked him and he seemed to like us! This is an older former RAMADA Inn and is in a great location, and has justs been refurbished. It is right across from MONDO KULTUR Coffee house which is a hangout for Taos locals! We will return. The only recommendation is better ventilation in the rooms. The baths do NOT have exhausts and the windows do not open. The beds were super comfy. Thanks Whitten, we slept like 2 kittens! Breakfast was surprisingly good too.

I have just read your review, and I realize you were here some time ago, but as we have just recently purchased the hotel and as part of our transition plan, we are replying to all the reviews of the past and present. Yes, you are right, this is an older hotel and is in need of many updates, and that is just what we are doing. We are remodeling both inside and out. All the carpet and furniture is being replaced along with a deep cleaning and fresh paint. The lobby and pool area has already been updated along with a lot of the rooms. You might say we are a work in progress, and we still have a long way to go, and we are very excited about the outcome. Please, come and stay with us the next time you are in the area, and let us know how we're doing. Again, thank you for your review, it was very helpful to us.

It all starrted right from the start our heater wouldn't work. I called front desk for service and they did respond fairly quickly. The heater controls were very worn and they stuck, finally got them to work and the controls were replaced the next day while we were skiing. The shower head leaked water all night, drip, drip, drip very disturbing. Came back to hotel after a long cold day of skiing and there was no hot water to shower with. This lasted for the remaining day and a half of our stay. Beds were uncomfaortable. Hard to complain to much for the price paid and the staff were extremely friendly.

My family (husband & I with our two small kids) love this place. We are locals and had recently needed to stay in town due to having work done on our rental. The staff is very friendly, their prices are very competitive, the rooms are clean...the queen rooms have micro-fridges and microwaves...all around a great value. We have stayed at other places in town and no other compares to the Whitten Inn. (Plus they have a great indoor heated pool and hot tub)

This place is oddly laid out - you had to go outside to access the office/computer/breakfast areas. Room was large and comfortable and a good value.
