Casa Gallina
Ranked #1 of 23 Taos B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence

Casa Gallina far exceeded our expectations. Our large one room casita was beautifully furnished and decorated, was very comfortable, and had separate sleeping, sitting and cooking/ eating areas. Richard, the owner is a fabulous, friendly host, greeting us with wine and munchies when we arrived and with fresh baked cookies the next day. A highlight is the yard and garden with beautiful landscaping and outdoor art and comfortable outdoor seating areas. There is also an organic veggie garden from which guests are welcome to pick fresh herbs, greens, and veggies, and hens which supply fresh eggs for breakfast. I think it is my most favorite B&B I have ever stayed in, and my husband and I only wished we had planned to stay there longer.

It's not possible to speak about Casa Gallina without extolling the serenity one can achieve by observing clucking hens, peeping chicks, and a gentle rooster. This is one evolved male; he shares treats with his "girls". These happy hens give eggs at an unprecedented level. Our sons were in eggstacy. Each day they fried, scrambled, frittered,or flipped eggs into a tasty concoction. And they could do so because the kitchen in the El Gallo Grande is outfitted with a fine array of top notch tools.

But I digress. El Gallo Grande is immediately welcoming from the courtyard to the veranda. One enters the casa through a charming kitchen with windows opening onto the courtyard. The "great room" is spacious, gracious, and stocked with fine literature. The bedrooms are , charming in decor, colorful and the beds are yummy. Richard is a spectacular host. He knows where to shop, eat and play and is happy to share insights with guests. Shawn, who helps out when Richard is away, is attentive and responsive. Is it Taos that has imbued Casa Gallina with such fine spirits or have their spirits created the serenity of Casa Gallina? It's the ultimate chicken/egg question.

It is conceivable, however unlikely, that there is in this world a more perfectly appointed getaway -- designed with an artist's attention to detail, surrounded by idyllic vistas, and infused with magical powers to calm and restore. Such a place might indeed exist.

It would not, though, have a Richard as its proprietor.

And that has made all the difference.

We found Casa Gallina when our hotel for a Taos writer's conference was sold out. The photos on the website (very consistent with our experience) and description convinced us that it was the right place for us to stay. What is missing from the description and photos on the website is the proprietor's personal attentiveness. His recommendations for what to do, the daily gifts of fresh eggs from his "girls" (the chickens beautifully tended out back), and the gluten-free delights left in our kitchen each afternoon all made our stay singularly magical. My wife and I are smitten. We will be back. My only temptation is to write a wicked review to keep anyone from blocking the dates of our next sojourn to our new sanctuary.

Room Tip: Leghorn is a perfect studio apartment for a couple's romantic retreat.

It's not really a B&B as you don't get breakfast , only the eggs from the chickens plus nice coffee and tea, so bring bread and other foodstuffs if you expecting something more.

Richard is really great very helpful and the rooms are really nice, locally coloured and restful. Home is 5 minutes from Taos and a 10 minutes to anywhere in the town but located in a quiet area surrounded by farms , fields and horses. Plenty of chickens in the garden who are friendly and dogs and cats from nearby homes visit as well.

Plenty of towels and full cooking facilities in the room we had, Barred Rock, which houses at let 4 people comfortably in the 2 beds and 2 bathrooms, Tv video audio etc provided but very ancient, huge old style tv, cassette player! Really needs an update soon to stay in touch with the real world at the prices charged.

Lovely place and would recommend to anyone in the area.

My husband and I booked 2 nights here after reading other trip advisor reviews. Richard and Casa Gallina did not disappoint!! The furnishings, decorations and treats that Richard set out each day made Bantam Roost feel like our own home. Note that in Bantam Roost stairs are steep and may not be suitable for some - other casitas are single level though. Would definitely recommend to anyone and hope to visit again some day!

What a wonderful spot for a restful vacation! We stayed at Barred Rock ( though we only needed the one bedroom, nothing smaller was available during the dates we needed the space) and the accommodations were lovely! There is PLENTY of room (two bedrooms, two baths, living room area, kitchen with island, and dining room space) for even two couples to relax and have their own private areas. You could not ask for a more gracious, helpful host than Richard. In addition to the fabulous fresh eggs (thank you ladies!), fresh fruit, and daily treats, Richard provided the BEST recommendations for places to visit, restaurants, hiking trails, etc. He really enriched our Taos experience. If we have the opportunity to return to Taos, this would be our absolute first choice for places to stay.

Room Tip: Go online to view each dwelling to determine the type of casita that best suits your needs and book...

This was our fourth visit to Casa Gallina in the past five years, and our stay was as wonderful as always. The Bantam Roost is cozy, the grounds are beautifully maintained, and Richard continues to be a warm, welcoming, expert host.
