The breakfast is just wonderful. The rooms are mostly just fine for an older motel. The only down side is the noise from the adjacent room or rooms. I would stay here again EXCEPT -
when I checked in at the same time as another couple, the co-owner, Julie, stated that business was down 50%. When I asked about the origns on the decline she stated as a annoyed manner, "it is this President and his two wars".

Never a good idea to mix business with politics and since when did Obana initiate any wars. I will not be back and cannot recommend as my politics and those of my friends lean left. Did not feel comfortable with the teaparty.

Just as an additional FYI, you better like a big, long-haired dog with a table level tail working his way around a very small breakfast area. I found it a bit off-putting.

Room Tip: Make certain you have no dog issues.

We loved discovering this slightly-out-of town (1.5 mi from plaza= not far) artistic, clean, pleasant B & B. The owners took a 1940s adobe motel and transformed it into a comfy, clean, homey, relaxing and beautiful B*&B. The homemade breads, treats and breakfast by Jules were delectable. Robert keeps the grounds, pool, hot tub spa area, buildings, and hummingbird feeders all intact. A photogenic place to stay, near spectacular hiking trails in the Carson Natl. Forest plus ski areas of Taos. We highly recommend for all seasons.

This little inn/motel is truly a one-of-a-kind.
What's wonderful about it: 1) the breakfasts. Not your usual motel/inn breakfast, where good = lots of mediocre food. Here, all the food is home-cooked, and boy is the cook a good cook!! Think, homemade biscuits, homemade quiches, local jams, and you get the idea.
2) The rooms. In summer, when we were there, the stucco makes the rooms cool during the day, comfortable during the night, without heat or air conditioning--a new experience for me.
3) The owners: pleasant, amiable, helpful, knowledgeable. If there's anything you're looking for (shops, restaurants, etc.) they can find it.
4) The location. Taos itself is small with heavy traffic on its internal streets, and this Inn is just outside of the town, so that you have a lovely feeling of having escaped the traffic and landed in peaceful, drowzy New Mexico.

Room Tip: They're pretty much the same--the owners will show you what's available when you arrive.

I wish Tripadvisor broke hotels into stars for categories. This is not a 5 star hotel by the usual definition but it gets 5 stars from me and my wife. If you want an Olynpic pool, tennis courts and an 18 hole golf course this is the wrong place. If you want a very comfortable room that makes you feel like you're staying with friends this is THE place.
Jules and her husband Robert know the best places in Taos for eats across a broad spectrum of places from prepared food at groceries to gourmet fare. Jules is a gem. She has decorated each room like a guest room in her home. An unbelievably good breakfast, perhaps the best we have ever had as an inclusive breakfast is served in the small lobby which feels like your dining room, You will have seconds. Jules adds fresh cut flowers from the garden. You'll leave with new friends and a real desire to see this couple realize their dream.

Room Tip: Everyone we spoke to was happy with their room

I have been going to the Inn on the Rio for over 10 years now and it is has been a winner EVERY STAY. This former- 50s style adobe hotel - has been completely redone in its' own style and charm. Each room is hand-painted. and is uniquely decorated with the creativity of Taos/ style. Jules and Robert offer wonderful hospitality and GREAT FOOD/MEALS. I like that is located in a quiet area. Love the HOT TUB area too. I don't think you will be disappointed.

my girlfriend suggested we stay here on our trip to taos as she stayed there twelve years earlier. well it was the same as she remembered. where do i start......breakfast is awesome, fresh, homemade and in a warm friendly room off of the owners living area. different meal each day and delicious! hot tub is very warm and well maintained. i'm in a push wheelchair and with some help from my girlfriend i was in/out easily. rooms are clean, warm and quiet. owners are very friendly and kind.the door was removed for me to access the bathroom easier. nice area in front to sit have a drink and talk tto visitors. very close to downtown and if you have any questions the owners have all the answers on where to shop, eat, ect.. we had a great time and could not ask for more. the price to stay is very affordable and i'll be sure to stay there again. On a 10-day spin thru Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado, we chose the Inn on the Rio because it was close enough to Taos to be convenient, but just outside the noise and congestion zone. A number of the rooms have their own unique decor and I reluctantly chose the "Cowboy Room" because of its size and amenities, fearing, however, that it might end up being kitschy. That was not the case. Each decoration was a genuine artifact and the room felt "real", not fake. In addition, the murals painted by a local artist varied according to each room's theme and were beautifully used throughout the complex. Hosts Jules & Robert were very helpful with suggestions of what to do in the area and finding excellent places to eat. They did all they could to make us feel at home. However, while WI-FI is provided, it doesn't always work in rooms, do to the thickness of the walls. Access can be gained in the lounge and breakfast area, but the hours that this area is open are rather limited. One final very important point -- Jules and David put together one of the best breakfasts you'll find on the road. Unique recipes and home-made bread and bakery products provide a great start to any day. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
