If you are a history buff, the hacienda is not to be missed. The drive out there is beautiful as you go through a county setting. The hacienda and the displays were so authentic that I felt like I was back in time. The curator did an amazing job! The rooms were not lit, but keep the doors wide open and you can get some beautiful pictures. Each room was furnished in a different setting-- a blacksmith, saddle making, kitchen pantry, weaving room, trading post supplies, bedrooms, chapel, and an interesting display of the penitentes-- all beautifully organized.

Very historical look at the early settlers of the area. Go at your own pace and you will learn how tough a life the Spaniards had as they set up a life in a strange land.

The hacienda in general is very interesting. The flyer gives a lot of great information about each of the rooms within the hacienda. There were only a few rooms that had the lights on, so it was very difficult to see the furnishings. At the end we asked the gentleman about the lights. At first he said that he forgot to turn them on and then he said the he doesn't turn them on in an effort to save money. Nevertheless, he did not offer to turn them on and let us go back through the rooms. So if you go to the hacienda be sire and ask the guy if the lights are on!

This was my first visit and I was charmed and educated. They have a current exhibit (like through about June 2014) of photograph of moradas in the Taos area. They are identified only by the subject, the weather, and the time of day for privacy; but the written notes including quotations from members of the Hermanidad (AKA Los Penitentes), offer great insights into this relatively unknown group. The rest of the museum presents an interesting insight into life for the Martinez family in the early days of Taos.
