August in Taos is pleasant for eating on the patio. We had champagne, oysters Rockefeller, scallops and tournedos that were all excellent. Really enjoyed the service and friendliness. Will definitely go there again!

In 2 dinners since it opened, this was my impression: calamari was no big deal, the watermelon gazpacho was a nice appetizer, the prime rib special was good. However -- the steak tartare appetizer is wonderful, and I'm not just saying that because it's the ONLY steak tartare to be found in Taos. Creme caramel is great. The tournedos are heavenly -- even despite the fact that they went back to the kitchen because the entrees were brought before we were finished with appetizers. They were not only sent back, but they were MIA for a long time. (This is what I mean by bumbling but amiable and solicitous service.) I'm not a big steak eater, but the tournedos were to die for -- far superior to the ones I had at a popular Santa Fe restaurant several weeks later. If you love good beef and you're willing to be a little understanding about the service in this newish restaurant -- it's definitely worth a try. The patio, right on the main drag, seems like it might be unpleasantly noisy, but is actually quite nice by the dinner hour. If you're not looking for a big meal -- steak tartare and creme caramel are a great combination.

dinner at martyrs was a real treat. the interior was cool, quiet, and elegant with relaxing music playing. although the menu befitted a steak house, we immediately focused on the veal chop and were well rewarded. they were cooked to perfection--medium rare--and were at least an inch-and-a-quarter thick. the wine list was also good with an excellent red to compliment the meal. as to the wait staff, they were pleasant, courteous and not obtrusive. overall, martyrs was a high light of our trip and one of the best meals.

We tried the new Taos restaurant, Martyrs Steakhouse in August 2013. The restaurant is in the restored home and forge of a blacksmith whose place was constructed in the early 1900's. Extensive renovations have created a lovely venue inside as well as outside on the patio. Although the patio fronts on the main drag, it was not at all noisy.

We had delicious beef done medium rare with tasty grilled vegetables. The garlic mashed potatoes could have used more garlic, but that's a personal taste. The service was fine. The menu includes fish, poultry and even lobster so despite being called a steakhouse there is a variety of items to choose from. A ribeye with generous sides was $30. We will certainly go back. The place has some parking which is hard to find in the historic area of Taos.

We went to Martyr's directly from Old Martina's where we had been ignored. We were greeted at once, and went to wait at the bar for a patio table. The entire staff was friendly and said hello. The place was very busy, but we found 3 seats at the bar, got drinks and were seated in less than 15 minutes. Waiter Justin was prompt, friendly, and funny! My husband got the prime rib with French onion soup, he said the soup was the best he had ever had, I agreed, it was amazing. My friend ordered the salmon, but after while, Justin came back and said he had put in the scallops for her order by mistake (we had discussed the scallops,) and it would take a few more minutes for the salmon. She said she would take the scallops if they hadn't started the salmon. He was so surprised and grateful, he kissed the top of her head, it was funny, we all laughed about it! Our food was delicious, and the ambience is delightful. It gets a bit chilly in the evening and they have these wonderful patio heaters and with the umbrellas all up it keeps the heat in so it stays quite nice. We went back a week later and had good food again. The waiter was not as experienced as Justin, but he did ok. Unfortunately, they don't have any of the traditional New Mexico food on the menu. I would love to see them offer tamales or chile relleno, I would go more often if they did.

Wow...what a sensational dining experience. We love Justin and were so sad when he moved back to NYC. He is a true professional.

We do offer Seafood Enchiladas at lunch now, AND our signature burger is stacked with bacon and New Mexico Green Chile'. We would love to see you more often and thank you for your feedback.
