“Very casual bar-like restaurant”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

This place is more like a bar that serves food, rather than a restaurant that happens to have a bar. However, it is a very pleasant casual environment to be in. There is a small outdoor patio which is nice. The inside room is centered around the bar area. There is also a game room that has tables in it.

The restaurant is a few steps off the main Taos square.

They do not provide the usual complimentary chips that Mexican restaurants usually provide. We ordered nachos and drinks. The nachos were good, they were made with blue and yellow chips and red onions (never had red onions in my nachos before). The tart margaritas seemed small...they were served in small brandy decanter-like glasses (what's the matter with using classic margarita glasses? It would be much more festive!)

Even though it seemed like a bar serving food, the menu was quite complete with various selections.

“Bad to average to bad”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

The Alley Cantina is a very short walk off of the main square in Taos New Mexico. I've been there several times over the years and sometimes it is average and other times it is bad, or not so good anyway. This last visit in August will likely be my last unless others in the group I am with wish to go there for some reason. If you're just drinking beer and listening to the live music which begins about 10pm you'll be happy enough. Their prepared foods are not so good and the margaritas we had at our table of 10 were awful. Can't believe we paid for the "premium" margaritas and all of us thought they were so sub-standard but that was the case. The waitress we had was quite content to ignore our party and spent the largest amount of her time leaning on some male patron at the bar. There are much better choices in the Taos area so why bother taking the risk.

“Nice place for a drink”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

The Alley Cantina was a nice stop to take a break while walking around the Taos plaza. We ordered nachos, and as the other reviewers mentioned, not the greatest nachos were to be found here. Bland, soggy with crusty beans and a bit greasy. Good place to get a quick drink. Nice location and out of the way from the crowds roaming around. We knew this wasn't the best place to eat, as we came apon the cantina during the vey busy labor day holiday, and hardly anyone was eating in the cantina. All the other restaurants were pretty much packed. Good sign the food is not the greatest.

“Great stop for food, drinks, and music”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

I had a great burger and fries at Alley Cantina and hubby enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich. It is cool, clean, and comfortable inside. Our server was very friendly and helpful, and the food was fast and yummy, including the pink lemonade. They have live music very night, too. The "oldest house in Taos" is a great place to stop for a bite as you peruse the Plaza.

“Average Tex Mex”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

Just off the Plaza down an alley - hence the name. Don't sit outside if you don't like smoke pollution. For lunch had nachos with chicken, mostly mundane and soggy but heaping plate which I could not finish. First glass of iced tea is $2.50 and rfills come in pitcher for which they charge $3.00 each. Unusual as normally free refills. Was not informed of this little extra! There are better places to eat in Taos.
