We encountered families with children of a wide range of ages and they all seemed to handle the hike. You'll likely see some wildlife early or late in the day. If you're healthy and adventurous, take a left at Williams Lake and climb to Wheeler Peak. It is difficult but extraordinary. Don't take it too lightly though. Take lots of water.

We hiked up to Williams Lake and it was beautiful and definitely worth the hike! Our kids, who are older, did great, but we felt really sorry for a family heading up (as we were headed down) and the (little) kids were still in for a rough hike ahead. The terrain is steep and rocky, especially at the bottom. We took a blanket up to rest on once we got to the top, and the view is incredible! The lake itself is small, but the kids enjoyed exploring around the lake. The trail is well marked and there were lots of other hikers on the trail the day we went. There is no shelter up on top, so watch the weather. We got caught in a really bad hail storm on the way down.

Definitely a great thing to do while in Taos!

My husband talked me into this and so glad tat he did, well worth the hike! Yes, it is a challenge, but stop and rest as needed and you will be fine. Make sure and walk a little farther back to the waterfall. Great pic opportunity!

Our group of seven made this hike today and all enjoyed it. You have beautiful photo ops the whole way up and at the top. I would recommend that you wait to do this until you are acclimated to the elevation, because you start at 9,000 feet and climb to 11,000. Bring water and a snack and beware that the last couple of miles on the drive are steep and winding.

The hike was pretty much straight up the mountain. We stuck it out and it was worth the trip. Some travel sites said that this is the easiest hike in the area. It was pretty tiring but the lake at the end was worth the trip.
