A friend and I had dinner at Donabe this evening. The menu provides a lot of variety and it was difficult to chose a meal as many options were intriguing.
In the end, we both ordered curry. She had red curry with turkey, I had green curry with tofu. Both dishes were described as roasted vegetables in a sauce, with addition of a protein optional, and so one had the impression that vegetables would be the primary component of the meal, but they were not. Instead, we both received generous bowls of sauce with a small handful of veggies submerged within. Some nice chunks of tofu floated in my curry and she had a couple of thick slices of turkey on top of hers. We both got rice with the curries.
I am a fan of green curry and I have ordered it in many places. This was billed as gunpowder green curry, which I hoped meant it would be more flavorful than usual, but I found it a bit bland.
As we left the restaurant my friend and I both remarked that we would not order the same thing again as it was just not all that terrific, however, I will return at some point to try another dish.
The atmosphere was nice and the service good, also the prices were reasonable.
I am hoping that the food will be improved by next time.
