“Charming, quiet and comfortable”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

We stayed at Dona Luz for just two nights but would have enjoyed more. The place is filled with art, the rooms are thoughtfully decorated and maintained, and the location is terrific just a block from the Plaza but very quiet. We stayed in the Santiago room and found it very quiet. The room was plenty large with a couch, chair, coffee table and fireplace. It's not like a lot of rooms that are smaller than the photo makes it appear. The owner's family is from Taos so we enjoyed hearing some history of the building and area.

The Oct 24th review does not describe our experience with the owner Paco at all. Paco was very warm and welcoming with us and the other guests. He even went out to buy a bottle of champagne for us when a friend had called in to ask him to do for us. He is a single dad with two sons so he does have responsibilities in his adjacent home as well. After his sons were off to school Paco sat with us at breakfast and is just the nicest person. He puts a lot of energy into his business, and his cook Elena was very friendly as well.

Now that we're at a B&B in Santa Fe we are missing all that we enjoyed at the Dona Luz.

This was a really great place to stay, the wife and kids loved it and so did I. Very authentic Mexico, excellent service...great memories. I particularly liked having breakfast in the back porch / patio. Overall very clean, warm and genuinely welcoming.

We should have posted last year but after making reservations this year and reading the Oct 24,2012 posting we can’t resist but tell how it really is! Paco is the most friendly and helpful owner of a bed and breakfast we’ve run across, and we’ve been to many throughout the USA. He always has a smile and friendly advice as to where to eat or what’s going on in Taos at the time. He makes us feel right at home. We’ve been staying at the La Dona Luz Inn for over 5 years and he knows us on a first-name basis. We wish we had known about this charming, friendly Inn before. We seldom make it to breakfast, but when we have it’s been delicious. When available, we stay in the Rainbow Room. It’s a Fantastic, cozy, two-story room, with a private Hot Tub on the roof. It has a kitchen and living room downstairs, a bedroom loft on the second story and a private Hot Tub on the roof. From the Hot Tub you can view the entire Taos valley and in the winter with snow on the ground it’s a fantastic view – Last winter we enjoyed the Hot tube in a snow storm – it was fantastic! Hope it snows while we are there this year! The Inn is located near the plaza, walking distance from fantastic restaurants and Cowboy Buda’s (Taos Inn). We highly recommend this Inn to anyone – from newlyweds to families with pets – A 100% recommendation!!!

First off, the rooms are very nice and very New Mexican and clean. However this is not worth much when you have an owner that does little to make you welcomed and has an attitude. We first came to the front door which had a phone next to it to call the owner who lives right next door. We waited for 5-10 minutes for him to show up. The first thing he said is that his son is waiting for him in the house so he will just show us to the room and leave. Gee sorry. Next, he didn't have enough change, but still insisted on us paying the cents and gave us a bit of change he "found in his car".
We were shown to the room which was on the ground floor right next to the office and the entrance. We asked if this is a quiet room and were assured it was. It was NOT. During the entire evening we heard every possible shower in the motel. Plus, every time someone upstairs flushed it was like a waterfall in the room. We were kept up until 12pm by guest coming in and out and talking outside.
Then breakfast. We came at 8:45, well before closing. There was nothing there, not even coffee. A girl was in the kitchen, saw us come in, but didn't bother to see if anything was needed or missing. Then the owner came in and started making pancakes. Nice right? Only he was making it FOR HIMSELF! He sat next to us for small talk, saw our plates were empty, yet ate up and didn't even asked if we wanted some as well. As the girl obviously wanted to finish already, the juice was offered in a single glass as she wanted to put the larger juice container in the dishwasher.

Taos was nice and charming, This motel was not. Stay somewhere else. The owner will thank you for not disturbing him.

We stayed in the last room available, on the 3rd floor with winding staircase that took us to a Lilliputian-sized but cute room. The owners reside on premise, and Paco, the owner, was friendly . This is not a place to go if you want luxury, but it is artistically (if funkily) decorated. Breakfast included was quite ordinary.

Room Tip: Top floor room not suitable for large or unfit people. (there was no pool or fitness center, but I c...

Thank you for staying with us. After staying in our budget room, I wish you had seen some of the higher rate rooms before suggesting the whole place was less than luxurious. The art, artifacts, amenities, quality linens and the best location in town represent a wonderful value and a real Taos experience. Your little room has a wonderful collection of folk art, a view of Taos Mountain from bed, Flat screen cable TV, DVD, iPod dock, Fridge, Microwave, coffee, wi-fi, custom hand-carved doors & furniture, newly remodeled bathroom with custom tile and high-end bath fixtures; it is a wonderful little space that far exceeds the modest rate. This room was just completely remodeled, painted; every item and surface thoroughly dusted and cleaned. We take housekeeping very seriously and a rating of less than five stars for cleanliness is hard to understand.
This room is loved by many, but is not a perfect fit for everyone, but please visit our website to view all that we have to offer!

Wonderful getaway from Denver, we stayed in La Madonna it was really clean and cozy. It is only a block away from the plaza so at night you can just walk to bars/restaurants. Every morning we ate an amazing breakfast made by Elena our host. Elena and Paco (owner) were very nice, they told us all about the place and its amazing history... i can happily say i recommend this place 100%

THANKS AGAIN ELENA AND PACO

WE WILL DEFINITELY COME BACK!!!!

We've been remiss of writing a review. We stayed at La Dona Luz from August 23 - 27 and had a wonderful stay. We stayed in the Yellow Bird Suite and it was fabulous. The doors opening to the enclosed patio area made it even more special as we could easily go out onto the patio and enjoy a bite to eat at any time. The light filtering from the patio filled with geraniums added a wonderful affect to the sitting area.

Even though the Yellow Bird Suite was located on the first floor, it was always very quiet. The location of La Dona Luz made it very easy to stroll to the plaza and visit the shops at any time without worry of finding a parking space or dealing with traffic.

Paco and his staff made us feel like part of an extended family, and chatting in the morning with other guests and their Taos daily adventures was fun.

Only suggestion would be for Paco to somehow figure out a way to improve the breakfast selection as it is very limited.

We would stay here again.
