“Convenient location in the heart of Taos”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2014

We live in New Mexico and venture to Taos a couple of times a year for a weekend stay. We've stayed at a number of different properties, but this was our first stay at the Taos Inn. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, although I thought it was priced a little on the high side. We stayed in a courtyard room, which had Santa Fe style decor, a comfortable bed, and a bathroom that, while a little small, looked like it had been updated. I chose the courtyard based on some Tripadvisor reviews because we wanted a quiet room, and it was quiet in the courtyard. You definitely do not want to stay in the main part of the property where the restaurant and bar are located if you want quiet.

Do take the opportunity to have a drink at the bar in the Inn or have dinner at Doc Martin's also in the Inn. The Inn is centrally located to most of the shopping and restaurants in Taos, a definite plus.

This was our first trip to New Mexico and I had my heart set on staying in this classic hotel. The staff was friendly and welcoming. We were able to get a very reasonably priced room near the lobby. It was large, airy and nicely furnished. We loved the convenient location of this Inn and walked all over Taos. The Adobe Bar was fun and relaxing after a day of site seeing. We'll be back!

Overall we had a positive experience and I loved the decor of our room. The master bed was large and comfortable. The back door opened to the courtyard which we lunched in one afternoon near the koi pond. The inn is extremely clean and I was impressed with how many people were cleaning and lobby/ bar area each morning. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. We rented rooms 104/ 105 which was a huge suite. The room tended to be too hot especially the smaller room. Being on the first floor, my sons did not know how safe it was to open the window at night. Also we were near where the band played so that could be noisy if you go to bed early. Although the wooden blinds were pretty they did not totally block out the street lights so if light at night keeps you awake I would not recommend this room. We did not try the restaurant but walked to other restaurants nearby.

All the people we encountered that worked there were very nice and helpful. The Bar was packed in the evening. We were in an outside suite. The smell of gas/propane was strong enough to cause us concern. probable safe but it was unnerving. The layout of the main room was odd and the pull out couch took up the entire other room.
Our friends were in and outside double and it was positively claustrophobic.
The food in the restaurant was good, however, the service was appalling.
All the power to them that they can command that rate but we will stay elsewhere next time.

Room Tip: Inquire about heating type and the condition that it is in.

Dear Trestexans-

Thanks for sharing, though would have loved to have been given the opportunity to address your concerns while you were here. All of our rooms are different in shape, and some in appointments, and we would have been happy to move you to a room with more space, or get you into adjoining rooms that allowed for more separation of space within your party. I would agree that some of our rooms are smaller in square footage than what is typically expected. Many of them were built in the late 1800, and early 1900, when the standards for square footage for a lodging were considerably less. As such, we have very few rooms that accommodate the current standard two queen configuration that is expected in today's travel market. Most of our rooms are single kings or queens.

We are on natural gas, so I am unclear about your propane comment. Over the 18 years I have worked here, I have heard of an occasional complaint from odor coming from Paseo del Pueblo Sur, which is the main road thru Taos, and does border the front of our property. Depending on the barometric pressure and wind, exhaust or other restaurant smells will travel over the building and into the courtyard, where you were housed, but this is rare. The only other incidence of gas smell occurs outside near our pressure valves, which by deign release a bit of natural gas periodically to maintain the correct pressure in the system. Of course, these are on the roof, and could have blown some of this towards your suite. I did examine both suites, and did not experience any natural gas odor within the room. Of course, we will keep reviewing this for safety and guest comfort, especially if we receive further concerns.

The most alarming concern was your feedback about the restaurant, which is disconcerting, especially in light of the almost uniformly positive reviews we have been recently getting on the TA Doc Martin's page. Further, there is very little information as to the nature of the problem, or if you sought help. I will most certainly let our Food and Beverage Director know of your criticisms regarding service.

Should your future travel plans include Taos, and you are traveling with a larger group, properties such as the El Monte Sagrado, or possibly La Fonda, might be better suited to your needs.

I would be happy to hear from you directly if you were available to share in more detail about your concerns.

Chris

We were guests during the Taos Shortz Film Fest a few weeks ago. Lovely spot. Great food in the restaurant - great live acts in the lounge. Very comfortable beds. The heat controls were a little wonky - we were out in the back in "Helen's House" section. No pool or spa - but really convenient to all that Taos offers.

We enjoyed out stay at the Taos Inn. The furnishings are old but in character with the historic nature of the hotel. Much more interesting that staying in a chain hotel. We noticed that the website picture associated with our room didn't match the actual room - no adobe fireplace - but that didn't really affect our stay. We stayed on a Monday night when there was open mic in the Adobe Bar and enjoyed the "local color" who participated. We had read that our room (102) might be noisy but didn't find this to be a problem. In fact, by 9:15 p.m. it was perfectly quiet. Since the Inn is right downtown, it was easy walking to most shops, restaurants, etc. Overall, we had a very nice stay and would do so again.

My wife and I and her and some girlfiends have stayed here. Each time the service, rooms and grounds have been perfect. It is a bit pricey but I think it's worth it. The location is right by the square and I loved sitting outside and watching the people and cars go by on the main drag.

Room Tip: Pick any of the rooms, they are all great, but if you stay in winter, pick one with a fireplace. The...
