Review of Los Cuates

Los Cuates
Price range: $5 - $15
Cuisines: Mexican
Description: At Los Cuates, we're not one of those restaurants that gauges the quality of food by its hotness. For over 35 years, we've been serving New Mexican cuisine known for its flavorful palate that gives you a kick without being overwhelming. Our recipes are spiced perfect. Come in to one of our four Albuquerque locations and try our chips and salsa - we guarantee you've never tried salsa like this. Enjoy our hacienda-style ambiance while savoring our menu of always-fresh authentic New Mexico classics. Our signature dish is the chile relleno. Each carefully selected Anaheim chile pepper is peeled, stuffed and roasted daily in our kitchen. We should warn you, they're very addicting. We're proudly locally owned since 1980. Many other restaurants and national chain eateries have come and gone in that time, and we're still one of Albuquerque's favorite places to eat. Come in and find out why. Try one of our award-winning special features that take New Mexican food to new frontiers. Some of our chef's recent concoctions include BBQ brisket tacos with blue tortillas and calabacitas, southwestern calamari and a seafood enchilada with spinach cream sauce. Whether you're in the mood for something traditional or experimental, at Los Cuates there's something for everyone. We're a local favorite not just because of our tasty food, but the great value we offer. Weighing-in at 6 oz, our tamale is the biggest in town. Our rib eye with enchilada special is loved for a reason, while our taco, enchilada, relleno and tamale combo platter is only $12.95. We invite you to compare, and then have a seat and enjoy the best deal in Albuquerque.

The enchilada and chili rellenos are great! A good alternative if you are in the east mountains of Albuquerque.

Los Cuates brings it menu to the east mountains. Good as usual, same menu as in town now on North 14

sucks....no really this place sucks. Back in the day this place was rockin, but now it's like a disgrace to anyone who knows what real New Mexican food is. My grandma is rolling in her grave and she ain't even dead yet. The service was extremely slow, which I found odd since we were one of only three tables in the place. When the food arrived I realized that the server was doing us a favor by delaying this ill-prepared slop. We couldn't bring ourselves to eat it. We just sat there being stared at by a herd of taxidermy deer heads who shared our misery. The place did look recently remodeled. When the check came, I felt as if I paid for much of the new fixtures. Also, the place had a raw sewage smell. I was told they were having plumbing problems. yuk, yuk, yuk, gross

I stopped at the new Los Cuates on Highway 14 because I wanted lunch before heading off on the Turquoise Trail to Santa Fe. What a disappointment. I could have been at any Mexican chain restaurant in the United States. The blue corn enchiladas were average and the refried beans and fried rise that came with it were bland. The sopapilla was good. The most disappointing part was the salsa, which was very thick and sweet - almost a paste. It was very spicy but too sweet and without a blend of flavors. There is so much good food in New Mexico, just not at Los Cuates.
