“Wonderful Drive”
Review of Sandia Crest Byway

The road winds and winds but it's only for about 12-13 miles. The trees are lush and the forest is fairly thick. The temperature is always cool up there so take a light jacket. There are several picnic grounds (no overnight camping allowed) and it is $3.00 for day use at each one. If you are going to hang out in that area a lot, you can get a $30 pass for a year at the Forest Service station in Tijeras. Everything is very clean (bathrooms, picnic tables, etc.) We did notice a couple of small graffiti marks. This place is a great place to spend the day. I love this drive.

The drive up Sandia (watermelon) mountain takes you through the forest and past the ski resort to the parking lot at the top. A $3 fee is required if you do not have a park pass. Gorgeous views of Albuquerque and a short loop trail along the cliff edge and back through the forest. There is a longer trail to the top of the tram car that runs down to ABQ. There is a large gift shop and snack facility. Local volunteers spend time there to answer questions. We drove down from Santa Fe on 14, the Turquoise Trail, because of the turquoise mine in Cerrillos. Through Madrid which has many shops with local artists and worth a stop.

If you can hit it right the leaf colors can be nice in the fall. In summer you go from 100 degrees in town to the cool 70's up top. On a clear day you can see for 100 miles. Great way to visit Sandia Crest without taking the tram.

Very scenic, a bit of a drive past the east side of Albuquerque, but worth it for a leisurely afternoon almost any time of year. In summer, you can cool off near the crest and have a picnic and a short hike. In winter, sledding is available if there has been enough snow. Autumn is breathtaking with the changing colors of the Aspens and Cottonwoods. A beautiful way to spend a day, high up in the Sandias.
