Let me give the positive points first. The game drives were excellent and we really enjoyed being with ranger Sean, we had very good sightings and we have no complaints as far as that is concerned.

The staff in general tried very hard to please and were extremely polite but could do with further training and a little finesse.

There was clearly a lack of management around and no one in charge. Only as we were leaving did the manager appear who had been off for the weekend. Over Easter weekend I found this surprising.

We paid a lot of money for the weekend and we assumed we were going to a 5 star lodge. Sadly it does not rate with the 5 star lodges that we have been to before, there is no comparison and I would only give this lodge 3 stars. The rooms are in serious need of an upgrade, when we arrived 2 pillows on the bed had no pillowslips, I had to ask for that. The pillowslips were threadbare and the edges fraying. The bedside lamp on 1 side of the bed was missing, I then found out that another room did have 2 bedside lamps. The mosquito net over the bed is seriously shabby with the odd hole here and there and watermarks all along the bottom of the net where it meets the floor. The towels were all fraying on the edges and in need of being replaced.I had to ask for fresh towels. Is this 5 star quality. The stool at the bottom of the bed, the lining underneath was torn and hanging down. Our family in the next door room had to spray Doom to get rid of all the insects and spiders in the room. No internet connection in the rooms although advertised.

So in my opinion the rooms need a serious upgrade and freshening up. Overseas visitors
have no expectations when coming to a game lodge and therefore accept what they get, but local visitors are more aware of what is available on the market.

Food was ok I am not going to debate it, some good some not so good.

Thankfully the game viewing made up for it and that we really did enjoy that.

The lodges probably do get away with mediocrity which is a shame.

Dear Yvette
We appreciate your feedback, even if we do not like to read your lines, and we wish you had a more satisfying Easter time at Rhulani. We are grateful that you mention the good points regarding the game drives with Sean, the attention of our employees, as well as some meals, thank you very much.
We would like to apologize for the inconveniences you experiences in your chalet. We do not often get negative comments to such an extent, although we do agree on the points you mention. The missing bedside lamp as well as the condition of the mosquito net and the ottoman are known to us, and we are desperately waiting for the delivery for replacement. All the further observations are also already addressed and will be resolved during our annual maintenance and upgrade mid of May 2017. Re-orders and deliveries have taken longer than we thought, and we certainly have to do a better job in having more items in our stock. We do apologize.
We also want to clarify that in Rhulani the Manager and/or Assistant Manager is always on the spot, which was also the case on the Easter weekend.
With best regards
Rolf & Marisa

We went in January and even in torrential rain we had an amazing time. The staff are just wonderful and our guide was really fantastic, we ended up as two sole guests in mid January and felt like royalty. It was so great we are sending our kids back in July. Cannot recommend highly enough

Dear Tracey
thank you so much for your lovely comment. It is wonderful to hear that our place and our staff could compensate for the downside of the weather, so you spent a good time at Rhulani. We try to give the best everywhere, but unfortunately (or luckily) we can not influence the laws of nature yet. We look forward to seeing your children again in July, many thanks for visiting us, and with our best wishes.

Did a lot of research before booking – read reviews looked at maps compared prices – decided on Rhulani and was not disappointed

Turn right at the 2nd gate from the South on R49 – fill in forms for entry fee – R360 for 2 – the gate will radio ahead to the Lodge – just a short and relatively rough drive to a sign for Lodges – turn left and a sign for Rhulani welcomes you – follow the circular drive and there are the smiling faces with hot towels and a welcome drink at the ready – check-in was painless – and off to room 8….

We stayed here from 6 March 2017 for 2 nights in a thatched bungalow which is completely secluded and about 100 metres from the central lodge – the lodge was about half full when we arrived and empty when we left

First and foremost the main room is large and airy due the high ceilings and light due to the many full length windows – it is well appointed and very convenient

It is basically divided into 3 plus an outside veranda:

The main room contains a large very comfortable bed with mosquito netting, a couple of easy chairs to sit in front of the folding doors that give a view of the outside, a window seat, wood burning stove, air conditioning unit, ceiling fan plus usual tea and coffee making station

A link area to the bathroom provides hanging and storage space plus safe and fridge

Then to the bathroom with large bath with a view and indoor and outdoor showering facilities – outdoor one was well controlled and powerful with constant heat

Then to the veranda which wraps around the front of the bungalow with a plunge pool – not heated but invigorating – plus a couple of sun loungers

Downside is that there is no Wi-Fi in room – shame – but there is a reasonable signal in main lodge which passed the newspaper download test reasonably easily

Pretty good so far – but the Rhulani experience is more than the accommodation – food, service and game drives – are a key part of the package

The food was tasty and well presented – dinner – soup, 2 choices for main - and dessert – brunch reasonably extensive cold buffet with hot items cooked to order plus hot and cold drinks – afternoon tea before game drive – sweet and savoury snacks plus hot and cold drinks – plus sundowners made to order plus savoury snacks – sunrise hot drinks and dunking biscuits – morning coffee is helped by a decent tot of Amarula which added to the experience

The staff as ever contribute greatly to the experience – always helpful always smiling – thank you

The game drives – we had 4 – all with Alasdair – very enthusiastic very knowledgeable – I certainly warmed to his approach – but you need stamina to keep up – the first night we followed a pride of lions through the bush in the dark – it was quite an experience as they were only feet away from us – the next morning we tootled around the bush waiting for our turn to see a pair of only 4 cheetahs in Madikwe – in the afternoon we saw a pack of wild dogs - on the last morning we tracked a male leopard – all in all we saw not just the big 5 but the Magnificent 7 - good thing about the drives there were only 6 people for 9 spaces in our vehicle – so there is room to spread out – and I understand that a third vehicle is on its way which will mean the same standards at busy times

The Lodge is open to wild animals with the exception of elephants and rhino which are kept out by an electric fence – so at night you are escorted backwards and forwards to your room by Michael who is armed with a torch

You might have guessed I/we enjoyed our stay at Rhulani and would recommend to others – thank you everyone

Dear Pete
First of all, thank you very much for your detailed description of your stay at Rhulani Safari Lodge, and for giving us a maximum rating and countless positive impressions. You have also taken the time to describe some details, which are not often mentioned, and which pleases us very much.
We are glad to read that we have been selected by you after a detailed analysis of different options. We spend a lot of time comparing us to other game lodges as well and our goal is to optimize the price / performance ratio.
You also mention two topics which are high priority for us and will be major innovations this year. Firstly, we have acquired an additional vehicle concession, which will allow us to drive into the bush with three land cruisers and better distribute our guests to the vehicles. Secondly, a fiber-based Internet has recently come into our region, which allows us to replace the rather unstable, satellite-based connection. Then we will again be able to offer a strong and fast Internet in all our guest chalets.
Thank you for your visit, it was a pleasure having you with us, and it would be wonderful to welcome you again in the future.
Best regards
Rolf & Marisa

John and Maureen from Glasgow arrived at Rhulani on 19 March for 3 nights. We had never been on Safari before and didn't know quite what to expect, but the whole experience was beyond words. Our guide Alastair (originally from Oban in Scotland) was mind blowing - the "Rambo" of Rhulani. What he doesn't know about Madikwe is not worth knowing about. We learnt sooooo much from him, and he gave 1000% every day in tracking the wonderful animals that we were fortunate enough to see. Early morning drives were fab seeing wondrous sunrises and magical animals, (and Alastar's special Amarula coffee was bliss mid morning!) Also the evening drives with sundowners provided some of the most breathtaking views. The lodge was wonderful. Room was just as amazing as the pictures, bed huge and comfortable. Food was very good, and the staff were all excellent, nothing a problem for anyone - they all felt like a close knit family and always smiling. This is the experience of a lifetime and we would certainly recommend this to anyone thinking of a Safari holiday.

Dear John & Maureen
We are very happy when we can present our nature and animal world to "first time safari guests", and so the happier it is to us if we are certain that the experience was as wonderful as you describe it in your feedback. Many many thanks for your Kind words and description of what you have experienced at Rhulani Safari Lodge. We are also pleased that our "Rambo" Alasdair was able to tell you so much interesting about the Madikwe reserve, that you enjoyed the breaks during the game drive, and that you had a nice time even in the quiet hours in the lodge. It was a pleasure to welcome you, and we sincerely thank you for your visit.
Best wishes

I don't often write reviews but our recent vacation to Rhulani Safari Lodge definitely warranted praise and comments. My initial visit to Rhulani was three years ago when I went for an unplanned overnight stay arranged by a colleague. In that brief amount of time, I was so impressed that I couldn't wait to return and share the experience with my husband. Our stay was from March 14th to the 18th so we had several days to have the full Rhulani experience. There are only nine chalets which promotes an intimate and luxurious experience. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Great attention is given to every detail from warm cloths and cocktails offered each time you enter the lodge, to the exceptional food served to ensure that your stay feels like paradise. Our field guide Alasdair Armstrong aka Captain Red Beard was fantastic! He did an amazing job of tracking animals throughout the game reserve. If you go to Rhulani and are lucky enough to get Captain Red Beard be prepared for lots of off-roading, fun and laughs and also a mean sundowner :-) We saw a multitude of animals including the Big 5 but I will always remember the lion pride and hearing the male lion's roar while he lay not 10 feet from our vehicle! If you're reading this and contemplating where to stay, I encourage you to make Rhulani your choice, you won't be disappointed.

Dear Madea-Dani
What a pleasure to read from your successful March visit to Rhulani and that your return to us has met all your expectations. It is wonderful that you were able to enjoy this time the tranquility of the African bush and the many details that you kindly mention. Your compliment to "Captain Red Beard" is very nice, we will forward it to our Alasdair, of course.
We hope that we will be able to welcome you for a third time in the future, and we thank you for recommending us to other interested parties.
Best wishes
