Impodimo Game Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 27, 2011

My wife and I stay at Impodimo a few years ago (Just getting round to reviewing my stay). From the very first minute to the last all I can say about Impodimo is Excellent. The food, rooms and service were top. We arrived just before afternoon tea and were treated to elephants drinking from the pool. Afterwards we had a nap for a few hours (after a 13 hour flight, 41/2 hour drive ((we got lost due to having no sleep on the plane)) ) in one of the best bed I have ever been in, the room was very nice with an out door shower. I loved sitting on our decked area watching the wild life walk pass.

All the safari were great our tracker spotted a pride of loins on the morning trip and in the evening we found the same loins minutes after a kill (well 2 kills) the smells, sounds and sights were out of this world. on a different trip a rhino walked pass of vehicle. I loved be the tea/drink breaks on each safari.

The evening food was out of the world – you do have to pay extra for drinks (may of changed now) but a good bottle of wine would only cost £15-20.

There is so much more I could say but I feel GO GO GO says it all

We spent 3 nights at Impodimo having hired a car and driven from Johannesburg. A straightforward 4 hour journey on 2 motorways. We are a family of four and had adjoining lodges 9 and 10 with our own pool overlooking the waterhole. We saw 22 elephants (yes we counted them!) splashing in the pool. We have done many safari's over the years but have never seen such game. Our guide was Beckson and spotter was Holiday (aka Lucky Bob) both very nice people and capable professionals, a credit to the Lodge. We saw a leopard kill in a tree, a lion eating a giraffe, many impala, zebra, elephant, warthog, hippo and a herd of 120 plus buffalo. We had an exciting encounter with a chameleon too. Rides are early morning and early evening but spending the day at the pool over the watering hole was magical. Accomodation is luxurious and food is excellent. No malaria. Don't forget to look at the sky at night!

Hard to review without sounding like a plant - beautiful lodge, luxuriously appointed, charming people to look after you, super food, excellent cellar, a swimming pool that an elephant really did come to drink from within the first hour after we arrived.

Matt (the Ranger) and Benny (the tracker) were perfect - Matt simply made the experience complete with knowledgable conversation, vibrant enthusiasm and a true joy in what he was doing.

2 days - 4 drives - we saw elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, hyena, lions roaring and mating, zebras by the dozen and so much more.

Just do it.

We arrived at the air strip by the tree and were wisked away in an open jeep. Not five minutes from the air strip, a herd of elephants walked in front of us. This was just the beginning of an amazing trip aided by an outstanding guide and tracker. Each day saw new highlights. Waking up early each morning to see what was at the waterhole outside our beautifully appointed room was exhilerating. You wouldn't know if it would lions, cheetahs or maybe buffalo. We couldn't have asked for friendlier, more obliging staff. The food was outstanding. Charlton the chef deserves special mentionfor making each meal more amazing than the last! Each trip out from the lodge was filled with excitement and laughter. A once in a lifetime holiday ......but I have to go back!! It was just SO great!

3 nights at Impodimo was about as good as it gets. The lodge manages to combine luxury accomodation with all the excitement of a bush experience. Matt our ranger with Bob acting as an expert tracker helped us see everything except leopard and Matt's youthful enthusiasm was infectious and a lot of fun. We enjoyed every minute and plan to visit again.

We spent 3 very enjoyable nights at Impodimo and were very happy with the friendly efficient service and our very comfortable, spacious accommodation. Our room was overlooking the waterhole (would recommend you ask!) with a wonderful private deck where we could while away the leisure hours between game drives, watch out for visiting elephants and pretty little resident steenbok and even take an outdoor shower tucked out of sight around a corner! They also had a well positioned swimming pool where I saw an elephant come to drink one lunchtime, plus a little library to relax in as well as a really inviting bar and communal areas. Food was delicious, plentiful and attractively presented and although the dinner menu was fixed with only two choices of mains and no choices of starter or dessert, it was apparent that they would cheerfully try to acccommodate any reasonable requests for other dishes if the set menu didn't suit a guest. Menu options were announced at brunch by the pool and orders were taken then but I was impressed that at dinner the waitron automatically knew what everyone had ordered without checking and service was at all times inobtrusive and efficient. The same can be said for the housekeeping staff, all necessary tidying up was carried out when the guests were on game drives.

We saw elephants, rhinos and lions extremely close to the vehicle on game drives every day and some amazing giraffe groupings (nine + together on one drive!), as well a buffalo herd and a hyena at a distance. We took some great photos, especially one of a herd of elephants who joined us unexpectedly during Sundowners miles from the lodge! Unfortunately leopard and wild dogs proved elusive on this trip and sometimes even antelope were scarce, depending on the area. After game drives it was good to chat with other guests about their sightings and the staff seemed genuinely interested too. It's a very sociable lodge but if you wanted privacy you could get it too.

We have stayed at other game lodges where the normal rates are considerably higher than Impodimo's but it would now be hard to justify the extra expense. In fact we think Impodimo's staff go the extra mile to give personalised service, attention to detail, value for money and make everyone feel truly at home.

First trip to Africa. SA Friends recommended Madekwe. Less commercial than Kruger and malaria free. It is hard to imagine a better Safari lodge experience than Impodimo. With 12 chalets in a bush setting it is intimate, friendly and unfenced, allowing animals full access to the site! Main lodge and accommodations very comfortable with suitably African decor. Chalets 1-3 have views over a water hole, while all are very private and include a deck and outdoor shower. Following our arrival at the airstrip after a seamless transfer from JNB with Federal Air, we were taken in hand by our personal guide Beckson. The lodge routine is simple and runs like clockwork, with 3 ½ hour game drives early morning and evening, leaving the middle of the day free to relax around the lodge. Meals are a gourmet safari, with brunch on return from the morning drive and high tea before the evening drive being served buffet style by the pool. Dinner is served in the main lodge immediately after returning from the evening drive, with canapés and aperitifs preceding. During the game drives refreshments are provided during a comfort stop. We travelled with our 2 teenage daughters and stayed for 4 nights. Recommend minimum of 3 nights stay to relax and enjoy. The only additional costs were alcohol and massages, all else inclusive. September weather perfect. We saw the big 5 and many others at and around water holes and dams and in the bush. Impodimo is located in the west of Madikwe away from the river, so no Hippos or crocs. I would not recommend the safari experience for children under 10 due to the length of game drives.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
On a rugged dolomite ridge overlooking a vast African wilderness, you will find a hidden treasure called Impodimo. Taken from the Tswana words Mpho Dimo, Impodimo means a gift from God, and is truly a slice of heaven on earth. Rise in the morning to an African dawn and enjoy an early morning game drive with your dedicated professional ranger. Relax as your ranger guides you through the bush on a custom made open Land Rover, searching out the Big 5 or the smaller secrets of nature. Set out on a foot safari with your armed ranger and learn the secrets of tracking African game or just enjoy the trees, birds and stunning scenery. Return from the excitement of the bush to a sumptuous breakfast or brunch and then relax at the pool or the sala overlooking the waterhole where game may come to quench their thirst. In the afternoon, when the heat of the African sun has diminished and the shadows are longer, head out again on a sundowner safari, where you will stop to watch the sun set on this bushveld paradise and enjoy your favourite sundowner drink. Once the sun has set and darkness descends, set off again for a night safari where the more nocturnal creatures now rule the bush. Return to the lodge where you will be treated to the finest Pan-African cuisine with your hosts in the open air boma, and share your days adventures, while you enjoy a night cap around the fire. Impodimo Game Lodge is set along a rocky ridge commanding stunning vistas of the reserve. It is also located at the source of a natural spring, which provides the lodge with elevated views as well as riverine serenity. The lodge offers dawn and dusk safaris. The safaris are carefully timed to ensure optimal seasonal comfort. Whilst Impodimo has 10 suites, its capacity is 16 guests. Each of the suites have been carefully positioned to ensure absolute privacy. Spacious in design, each includes a closed system fireplace, climate control air conditioner, mini bar fridge, tea & coffee making facilities and full en-suite bathroom and outside shower.
