Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 24, 2013

Our stay at madikwe hills, made the safari experience complete. The entire lodge was gorgeous, the setting was amazing, the suites were huge and beautiful, and the entire team there were gracious, warm and welcoming. Hannes and his team made us feel so welcome for out entire stay and our ranger Sheena and spotter Ace did a great job, making our game driver so much fun!

The only thig i would say wasn't 10 out of 10 was the gym, but that wasn't something of huge importance during this trip anyway :)

Room Tip: All the suites are gogeous, but do ask for a room with a vew towards the water holes in front of the...

Accommodation was outstanding, staff were great, ranger Nick and spotter Max were brilliant, all of the lodge staff were so nice. We had a wonderful 4 day safari taking in 7 game drives,
Nick was very knowledgable and passed on his insight into animal behaviour.
We hope to return some time.

Room Tip: We stayed in lodge 2, this had an excellent view of the waterhole.

We visited Madikwe Hills in April 2013, and were blown away. I travel extensively, and Madikwe stands out for it's great service and the wonderful rooms. Our guide, Greg Toplis, was fantastic, and made every effort to cater to the dream sightings of every person on his vehicle.

The staff, each and every one of which remembers you by name, are incredibly attentive. I was too short for the dining tables, so took to grabbing a pillow from the little lounge in the lodge every time we walked in. By the third meal, a waiter approached me with a pillow each time I walked to a table.

A great angle that the lodge takes is to involve the guides in customer management. You're essentially "grouped" with the game vehicle that you're on, driving early morning and late afternoon on the game vehicle with them, and eating dinner at the same table. There's enough time inbetween to not be irritated when you have an obnoxious guest at your table, and enough time during drives and dinner to enjoy the company of interesting guests and the game ranger.

This is a fantastic destination, and one I would suggest to anyone looking for a romantic getaway. The game is incredibly healthy and abundant, and every single herd or pack we saw had plenty of offspring.

Small snags in the weekend included a mix up with our spa booking and food that, while incredibly tasty, doesn't match up to the five star + experience that the lodge provides in terms of service, comfort and game. If they make oxtail, however, help yourself to a big portion!!

Room Tip: Room 7 has a great view of the park as well as the small watering hole by the dining area, and rock...

This lodge is an amazing facility with outstanding staff, food, and rangers. I went on 4 game drives and saw all the big 5. Absolutely a must do if schedules allow. The staff takes every attention to detail possible, my room was prepetually ready for me with turn downs, baths drawn, and candles let. The manager personally spoke to me at the end of the tour. This was one of my favorite trips / get-aways.

Room Tip: They are all amazing!!!

My girlfriend was offered a trip to Madikwe Hills through her work and we took it. It was one of the most romantic and luxurious weekends I've ever experienced.

The resort is a fairly long drive from Johannesburg. If you are driving yourself, leave Jo'burg and go past Sun City. This route includes a partial dirt road stretch but its the shortest and fastest way, and the dirt road is in good condition.

We stayed in room 7, which overlooked a small wood and a watering hole in the distance. From the splash pool we could enjoy a variety of game walking past, towards the watering hole.
Everytime you leave your room, for tea, a game drive or whatever, the staff enter and transform the setting for your next stay in your room: Making the bed, preparing the bed for an afternoon siesta or, to our surprise, running a romantic couples bath before the evening boma bonfire.

The staff all greet you and introduce themselves by name. They all make a point of learning guests names as well as any tastes you have (They learnt quickly that I don't drink coffee, and instantly brought me tea when I sat down).
The rangers are knowlegeable and through a radio network with other rangers they are able to present the best game viewing opportunities to guests.

There are only 2 drawbacks to Madikwe Hills: The food, although beautifully presented, somehow missed the mark. The servings are a tad small and leave you feeling just a little hungry soon after the meal. The food also lacks a taste or flavour to match the other amazing experiences at the lodge.
The other drawback is the distance. The lodge is apporximately 250km from Johannesburg but at least 100km of this is done slowly, on dirt roads, making the journey far longer.

These are 2 minor blemishes in an otherwise perfect weekend. From the welcoming staff, the quiet and peaceful setting and the luxurious rooms to the abundance of animals, Madikwe Hills is among the top game lodges in South Africa by a long way. Well worth a visit!

Room Tip: Try and book a room overlooking one of the nearby waterholes to maximise your chance of spotting ani...

This stay made for a trip of a lifetime. The Little Madikwe lodge for my wife and I and our two teenagers was perfect. The watering hole a hundred feet from our deck allowed us to watch a parade of elephants most days. The staff and food was great and we loved our personal ranger and tracker -- they were outstanding and ensured that we saw the Big Five, the Cheetahs and the rare wild dogs...
What a fantastic time we had there. We would love to come back and will most strongly advise our friends to experience it.

Room Tip: If you can get the Little Madikwe!
