“Perfect choice for a simple yet very high quality safari experience.”
Reviewed August 11, 2010

The safari was excellent with very knowledgeable guides. We saw lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, and the list goes on. The lodge itself is very simple but welcoming. There is a max of 18 guests which makes it feel very intimate. The food was tastey and the honour bar helped with the cold nights and campfire chats.

I loved Mosetlha so much that I just walked in the door from our stay and am writing this before unpacking or doing anything else.

You MUST stay here. If you are on the fence about going to any other park for the perfect safari experience (Kruger, Pilanesberg, etc), let me help you - CHOOSE MADIKWE.

Why Madikwe? Its a smaller game reserve with the Big Five (plus more!): less land + lots of animals = fantastic opportunity to see lots of exciting game encounters. Another plus is that the only other people looking at game are those that overnight in the reserve. Kruger and Pilanesberg can be absolutely crowded with random cars on the road, sometimes making seeing game really difficult. The major plus of Madikwe is that the rangers can go off-road, which they can't do in Kruger and Pilanesberg. This morning we drove down tree after tree to reach a spot where about 12 lions had just killed a zebra. AMAZING and definitely not something that could ever have been seen from the road. Finally, the major plus is that its a short drive (3+ hours) from Joburg/Pretoria.

Now on to the second question: where should you stay in Madikwe?
Mosethla Bush Camp, hands down.

For the price (they are significantly less than the other lodges), you will have the experience of a lifetime. The camp makes every effort to make you feel right at home, even though the comforts of home are missing as there is no electricity or running water!

Your camp site is an elevated wood building. Inside there is an incredibly comfy bed with warm blankets and not much else - what more do you really need? We were perfectly cozy, even though August was quite cold! I would think it would be super duper hot in the summer though...

The day is structured around the game drive, just like every other game lodge in SA. You're woken up at daybreak and after a quick cup of tea, you're out driving around for your morning safari. Our morning drives lasted anywhere between 3-4.5 hours, quite lengthy if you ask me! Upon the return to camp, there is a fantastic campfire-cooked breakfast that is simply divine. From about 12:00-3:00 is down time, where you can nap, take a shower (after boiling water in a donkey boiler!), read, play games, etc. After a quick "tea" (ours was soup, fruit, and rolls), its on to the evening game drive which goes into night. Again, it lasted between 3-4.5 hours. Upon return from the night drive, we had dinner and then a fantastic Herman Charles Bosman story read by the fabulous Chris at the campfire. Lights are out at 10:00, unless you're like me and like to have a nightcap by the campfire while watching shooting stars.

Again. Amazing.

Johnny was the BEST guide I've ever had (and I've been on 30+ game drives!) and we saw everything from baby hyenas to leopard to the largest pride of lion I've ever seen. He exudes calm confidence and is incredibly knowledgeable about Madikwe. We were so lucky to be in his car!

Meals were incredible! Its true South African fare, including a potjie for dinner one night and a proper braai the other (steak, boerewors, pap and sous, etc.). We had plenty to eat! I would also like to point out that they were incredibly accommodating to a fellow traveler with celiac.

We found everything about the camp perfect. We've stayed in plenty of 5 star lodges in South Africa, which are great, but it was great to experience the "bush" in a very different way! Even if you're someone who likes a little luxury, be flexible and try Mosethla. You'll love it!

I stayed at Mosetlha for three nights in July after the World Cup final with my brother and friend. For anyone wanting an authentic African experience I would highly recommend it but please do your research first by reading their website as this accommodation is different from the majority of the other places in Madikwe and will not be for everyone!

For example, there is no running water or electicity and you will struggle to get any sort of mobile phone signal but in my view the experience is all the better for it. and all of this is clearly defined on their website.

We had a fantastic time guided by Sam and saw plenty of lion, giraffe, baboon, black and white rhino, wild dogs and even a caracal and a gennet. The host/manager, Caroline, was also great fun and ensured we all had a great time.

The cabins/beds are comfy (with the added luxury of a hot water bottle during the winter months!) and the food was plentiful - you will not go hungry with a hearty breakfast (after a game drive) followed by lunch then another game drive and then dinner - though I think schedule changes in the summer months.

For those perhaps apprehensive about the sanitary/shower facilties - don't be! This is all part of the experience. There is a toilet and 2 showers for each set of 3 cabins (which sleep 2 people) with the toilet being a standard western type (without the flush) and the showers essentially being a bucket with a shower head fitted which you fill with fire-heated water and then hoist up - this will comfortably provide a 5 minute shower and I found the water pressure to be better than that at my parents house in the UK!

A great experience and i will definitely look to return.

We had a wonderful two nights at Mosetlha Bush Camp. It truly is a lovely place to stay. Caroline and her staff look after you very well. The charm of this place is that it is similar to camping in the wild but in off-the-ground, secure, equipped log cabins. Just make (like we did) that if you go in winter, there's a chance it will be Cold!! There is no electricity which is something we loved about the camp. An added bonus us that the camp is in the centre of the Madikwe park so you are able to visit many different parts of the park on subsequent days.
We would definitely go to Mosetlha again, but probably in mid-spring or mid-autumn. We didn't see alot of game, but this was unusual due to a very cold weather front.

We had so much fun at Mosetlha! I was a little concerned about the whole no running water, no electricity, but you don't even notice once you're there. Our game drives were awesome, Patrick really knew his stuff and was a lot of fun. The camp is so pretty when you come back from the evening drive, all lit up by candles, and the food is filling and delicious. Everyone who was there took a safari shower for the fun of it, and you have a lot more water than you think! I would definitely recommend Mosetlha to anyone who wants an experience and a great time!
