“snake infestation”
Reviewed November 29, 2008

As a US transplant in South Africa, I frequent many safari lodges with visitors from abroad. My experience at Jaci's Tree Lodge started out good enough but turned into a bit of a horror show and not one I would recommend to anyone particularly those with children. Our room had a surprise visitor in the form of a potentially deadly Cobra snake that became quite aggressive. Management's response was that "people pay to have that kind of experience." To the contrary, one pays the high prices in these lodges to view wildlife but to be protected by the staff from dangerous encounters. I was appalled by the blasee attitude of management. There are many beautiful lodges in South Africa -- no need to subject yourself to this one,

Really tough to describe the experience, this is just amazing. The Madikwe reserve is superbe and the location between a desert and close to a river means the landscape is very diversified, they say this is Big 5 territory, but big 5 is some sort of marketing b.s, so here they talk of the "Big 10", and we almost saw all of them, including 2 leopards. Our ranger / guide Neil was perfect, incredibly knowledgeable about the area and very friendly.

The experience starts from the airstrip ( go there by plane just to enjoy the quasi private transfer and the airstrip.. ), you were in J'burg 1 hour ago and now you are surrounded by Zebras...

The lodge is like a boutique hotel in the middle of a game reserve, decorated by the owner himself but it really feels like a luxury hotel in the trees, with a big bath in the bedroom and an outside shower. We stayed in August, so nights were freezing but with plenty of electric heaters and a blanket, and as one spend little time in the bedroom, this was enough, and there is no better way to wake up than take a hot shower in the morning surrounded by the reserve.

The lodge is next to a river and a water hole where you can see elephants sunbathing so location is spot on, there is a swimming pool - we did not venture into it as nights are freezing, but it must be awesome in the summer.

The place is very child friendly, our 3.5 yrs old son was not allowed on the main game drive ( it is freezing cold and both the morning and evening drives last 3 hours ), but he had his own 1 hr jungle drive after lunch where he saw Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Wildebeest, Leopard, etc...

The food is great, you have the choice of 2 meals in the evening and we could pick the food we wanted for our son, the quality of staff is great, 60 staffs for the 2 lodges, and their involvement in the lodge - they receive shares once they work there for more than 5 yrs - means they give you the best service...

This was our first experience of Africa but we fell in love...

We stayed at Jaci's Tree Lodge in April 2007 and couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience. The stay was unfortunately only three days as the budget didn't allow for longer but in the three days that we were there we managed to see the big five which is a first for me. Our guide, Franscois was so passionate that he even took us offroad (very offroad) the one night to try and find an aardvark - something that even he had never seen. The rooms and service were excellent and Madikwe, as a private reserve, is worlds apart from most of the Kruger Park.

We spent 3 nights with our three year old at Jacis Tree Lodge and it is one of the most amazing places I've ever stayed. The quality of accomodation was superb and very stylish, but what set it apart was the quality of service. The owners were very much in evidence and you got the impression they really cared about their guests, as did all the staff. We left early every morning for game drives with Sam, our amazing tracker and guide and managed to see just about everything except leopard. Whatever time we left, a babysitter was on hand to look after our three year old, who was spoiled rotten by the staff, including a trip into the bush to see the animals. Truly magical.
