These people really know how to make you feel special. Perfect gamedrives with our ranger Ollie who had the eyes of an eagle and lots of knowledge of the wild animals we observed. All in all we saw the big five in one drive! Also the people in the kitchen and the people who served us in the restaurant were marvellous. Thank you everybody at Jaci's for a wondeful 3 days stay! Hope to come back some time.

Lodge itself is great, beautifully decorated and I loved the rooms. I do question why they so studiously ignore the watering hole--the lodge we stayed at before Jaci's had all rooms looking out on the watering hole and we saw almost more wildlife at our hotel than on the drives. You can walk to an overlook on the watering hole, but it is not the same as seeing it from your room.

We saw the big five at the first lodge, but only 2 of the five at the Jaci's. Of course, it is mostly luck on where the animals are (they were mostly in the west when we were there) so I don't fault Jaci's for not coming up with the animals! the guides did teach us things about tracking animals, and information about giraffe eating habits and details we did not get from our first lodge.

The pools were great, and the children's room entertaining enough. I like the policy of letting people eat with their group only--the last lodge had made us eat every breakfast and dinner with other people in our jeep plus our guide. The food was excellent and there was a ton of it. The public areas of the lodge are truly beautiful--we should have used them more.

We had an unfortunate experience in that our guide Francios was felled by a scratched cornea after 2 of our 6 drives. We then had Declan, who is a newer guide in the park, and seemed to not know it as well. Without a tracker, he drove past a few animals (you can't really see everything, not his fault) and at one point seemed to really not know where he was going. Also, having the guides have to put together the sundowner package is not the best--and the snacks were not great as compared to general food in the hotel, and at the other lodge we had stayed at which had freshly baked items and a great variety (not always billabong). Also to serve wine in metal cups was a little punky. A couple of glass glasses would go a long way.

These small complaints aside, the place is wonderful, and our kids (age 6) adored it. Especially when an elephant got loose inside the fence and we had to walk with a guide for a while! The staff is very friendly and I would especially like to compliment Daniel for his great care of us.

I hope Francios is all better!!

Dear Kris,

Thank you so much for your review and constructive criticism. We are happy that you enjoyed your esperience with us, despite a few "hiccups". We will do our very best to improve on the concerns raised. Regarding the watering hole, this is an old quarry, that we were, after a few years able to utilize as part of our wetland/water recycling. So the lodges were built before this was created and the lodges as a result, are built amongst the beautiful river forest vegetation.

We hope you visit us again soon!

Upon our arrival our guide, Lucky and one of the lodge staff were there ready to take our car and bags and welcome us to the lodge. Our room was fantastic (number 6) and really comfortable. We went on two game drives each day and we saw the big 5 as well as a cheetah kill. The game viewing is the best I've ever experienced and our guide was fantastic! Our room was always prepped for either the night or day and the staff went out of their way to help us. The only reason I give this lodge a 4 out of 5 is because the staff and more specifically the managers were a bit unorganised. They offered us the hide for oe night and we accepted only to be discouraged later by the staff. Also, we invited friends from another lodge for dinner one night and they were given the wrong time (7pm) instead of 8pm. As a consequence they couldn't be there by 7pm so they ate dinner quick and then arrived at 8pm which was when we were about o eat. Needless to say they weren't hungry and the dinner was spoiled. The food at the lodge was excellent the first night but seemed to decline in quality over the remaining two nights. We were there on our honeymoon and I must say the lodge thanks to the lodge for the bubble bath, gift and romantic dinner they prepared for us one night.

Room Tip: Some rooms look over the water hole which is great for game viewing from your lodge deck. Also rooms...

Dear Megan C,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your lovely review - we are so happy that you loved your honeymoon bubble bath and that your game drives were excellent. It is really a shame that you feel that the food quality deteriorated towards the end of your stay. Our Head chef and his team takes so much pride in what they do and always try to create a masterpiece with every meal. if you have any specific recommendations regarding the food - please email me directly : jacislodgesgm@madikwe.com so that I can look into it straight away. Also, I am very sorry that your evening was spoiled and that you have lost your appetite because of the dinner timing. Our dinner time is usually 19h00 for 19h30 but, because of sightings and game drives sometimes being late our dinner can sometimes only start at 20h00. We wait for all guests to return and freshen up - have a great pre-dinner drink around the fire and then sit down for the meal. I am sure that your friends luckily understands this as they have been working here in Madikwe for many years. I am really sorry that your experience in the Starlite bed was cancelled. As you were aware - we had a exclusive group at Jaci's Tree lodge during that time and were going to do a bush dinner 20min away from the lodge that evening which would have made it possible for you and your husband to use the hide, but because the weather forecast said rain - and the clouds were looking very promising we decided to move the group bush dinner to the Tree Lodge starlight venue at last minute - because of this we could not host you in the Starlight bed as the guests dinner was a mere couple of metres away from the hide and your privacy would have been non existant - this is why we advertise the starlight bed (hide) - subject to availability. I really hope that you and your husband will soon return to Jaci's lodge to come and experience the hide. Again - thank you for your really great review - it's because of reviews like this that we can only get better and better.
have a wonderful day.

We took my mum here who was visiting from Australia and Jaci's really exceeded our expectations. Being able to see elephants drink at the waterhole just outside our balcony was just one of the brilliant wildlife moments including seeing wild dog pups, cheetahs, lions, wild dogs hunting, hyenas, white and black rhinos. The service at Jaci's is friendly and they really cannot do enought for you. Our guide Lucky was excellent, really knowledgeable and passionate about animals and made a special effort to cater to guests interests. It is worth noting that Jaci's is very kid friendly providing kids meals, catering to early dinners for them, providing a mini game drive for the under 5's and a games room w books, table soccer etc.

Room Tip: Nare suite by the waterhole is just stunning.

We could not fault this fabulous safari lodge as part of our 'once in a lifetime' family holiday to South Africa. We stayed in the Nare Suite, a 3 bedroom thatched family lodge with its own deck and small pool superbly situated to overlook a water-hole and out in to the bush. With the family suite came our own guide and vehicle for all the game drives. We have to give a special mention to Lucky (our guide) who was so knowledgeable, personable and passionate about his job, never tiring of our endless questions and seemingly able to find every possible animal we wanted to see .... including the elusive ardvaark! Every detail of our stay was taken care of and all the staff and management were friendly, welcoming and always helpful. The main lodge was fantastic being luxurious while still managing to be comfortable and welcoming and making us feel right at home. The food was superb and plentiful and we were so pleased with the effort made to cater for both our boys' food allergies; nothing was too much trouble. We only wish we had kept this part of our holiday till the end as it was difficult for anything else to come anywhere near. A hard act to follow Jaci's ..... thank you, we'll never forget our 5 days with you!

Dear Clare
Thanks very much for the honest and incredible review. The Nare Suite is amazing indeed, and extra special for the whole family. We are pleased that you enjoyed the view of the watering hole and its surroundings. Aardvark is one of the rarest animals to find in South Africa and Madikwe game reserve, you are very lucky to have seen it. We are also so pleased that you feel that your guide (Lucky) went out of his way to find this creature and most importantly spending time sharing knowledge and answer all the questions with a smile. Great to hear that you enjoyed the food, Chefs take their time from Morning till sunset to make sure they deliver or serve the best.
We are happy that your vacation at Jacis lodges is full of great memories and looking forward to welcome you back in the near future

The lodge itself is very nice and Madikwe park is stunning. It seems to be well managed and there was usually only 1-2 vehicles by the animals and there is a standby policy for other vehicle, to wait to view to keep the vehicles by the animals to 2 at max. The general staff at the lodge were very friendly and helpful and lovely with our children.
But what made our stay really special was our FANTASTIC guide - Lucky. We had our own vehicle with Lucky for the trip and he was very knowledgeable, very amiable and great with our children. This gave us some freedom to go out and come back when we choose to, We also had another guide for one day and she was also really good - Cheriss.
The food was plentiful and fresh - but it is more like country homestyle cooking that haute cuisine. My husband had some dietary issues and they were very accomodating.
The electric blankets in our bed were wonderful as was the underfloor heating - a nice touch! Especially as it was winter when we visited so cold in the morning and evening.
We were very fortunate to see the entire big 5 plus wild dogs, hippo and crocodiles but that is the luck of the draw.

Exellent luxurious place to stay. As it was winter, it was cold. So when we went to our rooms it was a nice surprise that the beds were heated as well as the floor. We got very lucky with our guide Lucky. He made our stay, with special attention to our son, chasing the wild dogs, tracking down lions and nice converstations in the evening over a good glass of wine. And ofcourse the beautiful sundowners. We did not know about the hide out, which was a shame. Maybe the management should inform he guests about that a bit more. Food was nice but we were a bit disappointed that is was such a hurried affair. You arrive after the game drive get a drink and than within an hour everything is finished. We would have loved to drink another glass of wine around the fire, but everyone was gone including the staff. Only one thing that should be better, We stayed with the three of us in the room and only one could have a good hot shower after that the hot water was finished. So we took turns who could shower first. And we were a bit annoyed by the message that we could use the bathrobes but it is a waste of water if we did. And we could use the open fire in the room but it was not advised for enviromental reasons. Although I understand the reasoning behind it, it felt a bit strange and unwelcoming.

Dear Nynke

Thank you for your review of your visit to Jaci's Safari Lodge.

I am delighted you enjoyed your game drives with Lucky - we certainly have a great variety of game in Madikwe & especially enjoy fabulous sightings of our highly endangered Wild Dogs frequently.

Our apologies for not explaining "the Hide" overlooking the waterhole at Jaci's Tree Lodge - we will make sure we describe it to all our guests in future. I am sorry you felt meals were a rushed affair - this is not the way we feel about them and certainly not the impression we intend to portray - we welcome guests to sit around the fire - both before and after dinner.

Regarding the bathrobes - the message we have on the gowns is intended to make guests aware of the environmental impact of water usage & wastage and is only serving to remind guests that they can contribute to water conservation by leaving the gowns folded - if they are not used - to avoid unnecessary washing. (the same option is given regarding the bath towels being washed each day or not)
The fireplace in your room - for safety reasons you are advised that we will put limited firewood in the room and we will only light the fires once you are back in your room after dinner.

Thank you again for your valuable feedback and visiting Jaci's Lodges.

Wild wishes
Mocca
