“So Amazing !!”
Reviewed September 27, 2011

We can not fault this place and the staff made it fantastic. Upon arrival we were greeted by the staff and then dinner was waiting for us . We met our Ranger Pheanius who was also amazing with such knowledge and experience. Unfortunately we only stayed 4 nights and could have quite easily have stayed another week. The lodges were perfect and we felt so lucky to have chosen this place to stay. The views out of our bedroom and bathrooms were amazing and you feel like you are safe but able to experience the wildlife up close. One night there had actually been lions walking past whilst we slept as we were awoken by some growling ... this just added to the feeling that you are truly in the wild and such a wonderful place.
The food was also lovely and more than you could eat ! Afternoon tea's , morning cuppas and snacks , followed by three full meals , can never be said there was not enough!
The actual game drives were great, we found we liked the early mornings better than the evenings but the evenings give you different animals to see and a whole different perspective. Our children , 22 and 13 years thought it was the most amazing thing they had done and that is quite an achievement after living and moving abroad a lot. They loved our ranger who was fantastic,,,, I can go on and on as the manager was so helpful and the staff perfect. Even sang to us on a couple of evenings and that was also very special.
Would absolutely recommend and is still one of our best places on on 3 month tour of the southern hemisphere.
This time of year was also good as it was not too warm and the trees are not all in leaf so we could see the animals better. We have some amazing photo's and the great thing is that they can get real close up. Keep up the great work and looking forward to returning soon.

Room Tip: Any room here as there is only 10 lodges and all are so close to main area and pool.

We are a family of five - two adults, three children aged 12, 9 and 4 (almost 5). We moved across to the Hanglip Lodge after booking to stay at the Wildside Camp - hadn't realized that it was tents and we wanted proper rooms. We had two rooms - well appointed but not inter-connected - and since the lodge only has ten rooms in total, we felt like we had the place to ourself. The views and setting are truly spectacular and the service/food at the hotel is amazing. Our guide, Kyle, was brilliant - knoweldgeable and friendly - and we saw so many animals and amazing sights (drove up the crevice in the jeep to the mountain top, went swimming in a rock pool, visited the animal breeding center, etc). Something different every day. We also played golf at the Legends Resort (lovely course) and attempted the Extreme 19th Hole - gimmicky but well worth it - once in a lifetime thing. Would definiely recommend this hotel and intend to go back. Five stars all round.

We arrived not knowing WHAT to expect but were greeted by a welcoming party at the door. We met our ranger Simon, a soft spoken but turned out to be an extremely experienced “Game Field Guide”. He showed us to our lodge, a beautiful space with decoration that evoke the romantic Africa of yesteryear, but with all modern utilities, and a much needed fireplace.
All together, we went on 6 game drives, in the 3 nights/4 days stay. We saw more animals than we had ever imagined and we got close, VERY close to magnificent wild beasts such as cheetahs, lions, rhinos, jackals, hippos, elephants and etc. We saw lions hunt at night, we saw the lion king roared, again and again, and we saw lions eating their kill less than 20 feet away. Because this is a private reserve, the ranger was able to drive off the road and get close to the animals, it felt a little too close at times but we were in safe hands. We even saw a juvenile black mamba at arm’s length. Our guide Simon explained everything to us and was very accommodating.
Our last night in the reserve was our 10th wedding anniversary. The lodge manager Tom arranged a special dinner for us, to dine in their wine cellar all by ourselves. At the end of our dinner, our Zulu chef even came in and sang a beautiful Zulu song for us.
The staffs are very friendly and very helpful. Just one thing to keep in mind, most of the meals (if not all) are of buffet style. But, you can choose to dine in any of the other lodges (i.e. Lakeside Lodge or Wildside) within Entabeni Game Reserve and your ranger will take you there. They will even pack a picnic basket for you so you can stop by a beautiful (but safe) spot for lunch. They even send us a dish of sandwiches one afternoon waiting for us in our room when we came back from a game drive.
We went in early September so it’s their early spring. It was a lot colder than we had anticipated but thankfully there are blankets on the jeep/rover for those 6am and evening game drives. The coffee break during the morning drive is much welcome, and very safari romantic.

Although our visit was during the British Lions Rugby tour we took the chance to view some real Lions at home in their natural surroundings and what surroundings they were, apparently given its name by the mountains which overlook the reserve, our lodges were very impressive and as there were sixteen of us we took up almost all of the lodges. As it was their winter we found the days were warm enough to be poolside but it did get very cold out on the drives, the drives were early morning and evenings, and did take up the best part of the day leaving us a few hour to chill out around mid-day, we stayed for two nights and managed to see most of the parks wildlife lions, elephants, cheetahs, rhino, hippo, giraffe etc. The staff and rangers were excellent, food was very good and clean lodges made for another high point to our very memorable tour, would recommend the lodges should imagine a stay in their summer may be even better.

We stayed at Hanglip for 3 nights with our 3 children aged 7, 5 and 4 in August. We started our stay at Wildside Camp but moved to Hanglip after 1 night as the tents were too cold and too basic. Hanglip Lodge which is only 1km from Wildside Camp could not have been more different. The accommodation is in individual lodges which are very comfortable and easily fitted in the 5 of us. The service at the lodge was top class and the staff did everything they could to make our stay special. Our guide, Aubrey, was outstanding and so good with our kids. The food was great and the spa was superb. I had one of the best massages that I have had anywhere in the world. What we liked about Entabeni compared to other game parks was the excellent range of activities on offer which you could do between game drives. Over the 4 days we tried horse riding, quad biking, absailing and hot air ballooning. There is plenty of game within the park. We saw lion and rhino every day but the elephants are more elusive and we only saw them at dusk on one evening. Overall I would strongly recommend Entabeni as a good park especially to introduce children to game viewing as it is quite compact so there is always enough to see. I would also say that Hanglip is the pick of the places to stay within the park.

We were fortunate to enjoy a weekend at Earthsong Lodge in the Entabeni reserve in early December 2007, courtesy of the general manager. It is a five-star safari lodge with ten loose-standing units, each with a large bedroom/lounge, large bathroom with bath and shower, own fireplace as well as a veranda overlooking the Waterberg mountains. The units flank a central swimming pool and outside dining area and the entire complex is unfenced with wonderful views across grass plains and a wetlands area abundant with birdlife (apparently over 400 species). The view is set against the backdrop of the Waterberg mountain range and both Earthsong and the nearby Wildside luxury tented camp form part of the lower escarpment area of the Entabeni reserve. There are also various lodges on the upper escarpment, which is reached by a very steep road up a gorge, only accessible with the reserve’s own game drive vehicles.

Entabeni is about 2 hours 45 minutes drive north of Pretoria. Toll-road highway most of the way and the last 10 kilometers on a good quality gravel road. Upon arrival you are personally met by the lodge’s staff and shown around the small complex. The spacious reception area also serves as lounge and dining room and is tastefully furnished. There is a large fireplace and well-stocked bar – perfect for leisurely sundowners or chilly winter evenings. The wine cellar can be booked for private meals and my wife and I had it all to ourselves for a romantic dinner. The complex also has a Jacuzzi and a small massage / health spa area.

The loose standing units are reached via a short walk through the garden and you are advised not to walk around after dark without an escort. Armed rangers have to accompany you after dark and this proved not to be merely a marketing ploy – a hippo grazed outside our room just as we were about to walk to dinner! Our room was spacious and very tastefully decorated with guest amenities such as shampoos and bath foams, a hair dryer, thick guest cloaks, coffee/tea/cookies, a fully stocked bar-fridge and even a pitcher with sherry and a fire-place stocked with wood. The unit had an air conditioner (a must in summer when it gets extremely hot in this area – 35 degrees celsius and more).

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price, as are two game drives (early morning and late afternoon till after dark). You are not allowed to drive around yourself. There is not much to do at the lodge otherwise so children will probably get bored, but it is so quiet and tranquil that it provides a wonderful setting to just relax by the pool or on your own veranda. The reserve offers all kinds of activities that can be booked separately, should you prefer to be more active – archery, paintball, quad biking, abseiling, hiking with armed rangers, picnics in the berg with swimming in natural rock pools, helicopter flips up the escarpment, sun downer boat cruises on the lake etc.

Everything seems to revolve around the morning and afternoon safari drives each day. Breakfast is served at 9h00 when the morning drives return and dinner is served at 8h00 after the evening drives. These take about three hours and we had ample time to enjoy the sight of a pride of nine lions around the open safari vehicle on our first evening. We also saw rhino’s and a variety of antelope. Evening snacks and drinks were served in the veld at dusk and on the morning drive coffee and snacks are also served half-way through the drive. We unfortunately missed the elephants, but saw enough to keep us happy.

We had a wonderfully relaxing time and can certainly recommend Earthsong Lodge for a great experience of the African bush.
