“Fabulous Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

We started our honeymoon trip to South Africa at Garonga. We heard of Garonga through a friend who highly recommended it. We are so glad she did, because we fell in love with South Africa on the first day. Everyone who works there has a fantastic attention to detail and are extremely friendly. We spent 3 nights here and enjoyed every second. The food was unbelievable from the taste to the presentation. Our guides, Dynamo & Mussa, far exceeded any expectation and were so knowledgeable. We were there in January, which is the rainy season, and it rained A LOT! We still had our game drives with breathtaking views and saw a lot of the animals - truly an amazing experience!!!

My partner and I celebrated his retirement and my 70th Birthday in February and decided Safaris in South Africa and Mozambique beach resort were where we wanted to be. We were not disappointed. Garonga was the second of our safaris and where we just happened to be on the day of my birthday. There are only six tents with a maximum of twelve visitors at one time so it was a very exclusive little group - and what a group. We all became friends immediately on our first night where we all met up at the Boma for drinks and our first meal. This for me was something very very special and I couldn't have wished to share my special birthday with nicer people.

Words cannot really describe the beauty and secluded athmosphere of the camp and the friendliness and attention to detail of all the staff and of course Bernie the owner. You have to go there and experience it yourself. You can also read Marie's review - a fantastic review and very detailed. Couldn't agree more Marie.

We will definitely go back again as soon as we can. My partner took all the animal photographs and I concentrated on the "home" comforts so here are a few of my photographs.

Thank you Bernie, Liz, Jeff and Rebel, and ALL the staff at Garonga - we will never forget you.
Margaret and Charles - Switzerland

Room Tip: All six tents are luxurious and comfortable, set in amongst the trees and bushes. We were in No. 3...

We were booked here as part of a wedding anniversary/retirement trip, long planned, and a wonderful itinerary put together for us by Imagine Africa. Garonga was the last leg of our holiday. We spent 5 days there and I cannot find enough words to describe this place.

Firstly the rather unique lodge style - tents with a twist! Just six of them which made for a lovely intimate party size. Extremely comfortable and with so many little touches included. Even an umbrella and mosquito repellant sprays! Each tent has its own veranda with hammock, perfect for lazing the day away after those early game drive wake up calls.

Breakfast choice was great. Lovely buffet - then a choice of healthy or unhealthy main courses - changing every day. Lunch, later in the afternoon, is a much lighter affair, serve yourself so you can snack or eat well (or ask for a picnic in the tree house - your food and drink taken out a short distance from the lodge where you sit among the birds and be at peace). Finally dinner is three courses, each night introduced in detail by the chef for the evening. Boma night is great fun - it was our first evening and so a great chance to get to know fellow guests in a relaxed way. Each night they ring the changes for dining - so sometimes group tables, sometimes private dining for the romantic! Even breakfast had a twist one day (a bush breakfast).

And now for the Game Drives. Two vehicles were in use for the five days we were there - serving ten/twelve of us. Which was ideal - enough space without feeling you were on a bus tour! The guides are knowledgeable, entertaining...all of them (and they join you again for drinks before dinner so you really get to know them well). We saw everything but the leopard in our five days (yes - even the buffalo - part of a breeding programme). Not every day is 'wall to wall' animals though. However we felt that reflected the nature of a still growing reserve and really teaches you to enjoy the experience, appreciate the little things too. It's not all about the big 5. If you get chance do a bush walk - you learn such a lot. We have visited the Masai Mara where animals are in abundance - but sadly so are vehicles! The beauty of the Makalali reserve is you may rarely see another vehicle and if you do it will either be your other group or one of the Makalali's own groups (we only ever saw two vehicles anywhere at any one time). Animals are not crowded and there is a great camaraderie between the lodges as they swap tips about what is happening in the bush.

Then of course tea stop (morning) and sun downer stop at dusk all add to a great way to spend a few hours each day.

All drinks are included and the bar selection is pretty impressive. There is a small cool pool and sun loungers for those wanting to swim too.

There are lots of things you can do too while you are there - partake of some of the spa treatments, do a bush sleep out, a microlight flight. Or then again you can choose to do nothing. The emphasis here is to feel at home, be at one with the sounds, relax and leave the rush of our daily lives at home for a while.

We were so lucky to find ourselves among some great people for our five days here. The experience was really quite special. To listen to Andy and Bernie tell us about the initiatives and the eco approach to this very different lodge is simply fascinating and their achievements thus far are to be congratulated.

We thank everyone at Garonga for making our stay so very memorable.....we were so sad to leave. If you could have a wee look in tent No 5 next time you are there please - I think I left a piece of my heart there.

Room Tip: We were in five and had a great view of the watering hole!

Wow! Our group of 8 (two families of 4) just returned from a three-week trip to South Africa. We spent three nights at Garonga, followed by four nights at a private lodge in Kruger National Park. I will split the review up into the lodge and the safari experience.

Lodge

Garonga is a private game reserve that is contiguous with the Makalali Conservation Reserve, west of but not adjacent to the central part of Kruger. There are many, many reserves in this area. We stayed at Garonga because our travel agent recommended it and the reviews were favourable. The lodge is actually two lodges (Garonga and Little Garonga). Because we were a large group, we were able to book Little Garonga, which we had exclusive use of for our stay. We had a staff of 7 or 8 devoted to us during our stay. This stay ranks as one of the nicest, most luxurious stays we have ever had, anywhere, even though we were in the middle of the South African bush.

Little Garonga is so nice, so luxurious, that Brad and Angelina (and kids!) wouldn't feel out of place. It consists of three suites, one of which, the Hambledon, is able to accommodate a family of four. This is where we stayed. It was basically a small house with no kitchen. It had a beautiful deck, a private pool, outdoor shower, hammock, AC, and lots of room for lounging. What struck us most was the obsessive attention to detail. I don't know where to begin. Here are some examples. Every time we left your room (for a game drive, for a meal) the housekeeping staff came into our suite and "fluffed". Whether is was replacing towels, turndown service, etc, every time we came back to our room it had been tidied up. There were little zen gardens with lovely sayings placed by the staff every day that brought smiles to our faces. Complimentary laundry and the laundry ladies placed handwritten inspirational notes on the basket when it was returned to our room. The amazing wildlife coffee table books left around for perusal. There was the little stuffed animal that was left for our 9-year old daughter on her bed on arrival. There was a wonderful "British" sense of hospitality everywhere (Bernie, the owner, is a Brit). The rooms were decorated with a woman's touch. Very tasteful, very thoughtful. The food was terrific, every single meal. Little Garonga is truly a special place.

Game Drives:

We had two great guides with us in our private open Land Rover during our stay. We were out at around 5:45 am, back at 9 am, then out again at 4:45 pm and back at 8:00. This is a private reserve that has the run of a very large area because of the lack of gates between it and Makalali. The area has been reclaimed over the years by Mother Nature as it was once an area of farms. The reserves have been restocked with wildlife. I would characterize the area as one of moderate topography with some nice vistas but mostly fairly closely-spaced thicket. Given the time of year (Southern Hemisphere summer) this made sight lines and photography challenging at times.

We saw just about everything you would expect to see on safari but with the added bonus of lots of birds because of the time of year. The highlights were seeing cheetahs at close range and also lion yearlings on our last day. Lots of rhinos, elephants, giraffes etc. The animals all looked wonderfully healthy and content!

Two last things worth mentioning. There is an airstrip at Garonga so Bernie arranged to bring in a friend who flies Maxilight planes. There were three planes and all of us went up for 20 minutes or so to get a view of the surroundings and spot a few animals. The other thing was our family of four slept out in the bush one night. Just the four of us under the stars on a sleeping platform that is about 20 minutes away from camp by vehicle. If you have the chance, do both of these things!

Why four stars and not five? The lodge is five star all the way. But, as I mentioned at the outset, our stay was followed by four days in the south part of Kruger. For sheer beauty, Kruger can't be beaten because it has never been subjected to farming or cattle grazing. It is pristine, original African bush and it is spectacular. Almost impossible for a private reserve to compete with. Little Garonga is ideal for romantic and luxurious, pampered getaways. But if you are a hardcore photographer and/or naturalist, you may wish to investigate other options as well.

Room Tip: If you can swing it, book Little Garonga instead of the Main Lodge. It is truly an experience of a l...

My husband and I decided to spend part of our honeymoon at Garonga Safari Camp per a suggestion by our travel agent at Imagine Africa, and we are so glad we did! The entire staff, from the guys who served us during the meals, to Bernie the owner of the property, is so incredibly attentive and friendly; we were completely spoiled. Bernie is so nice and laid back - he always stopped by to chat whenever he was around. There were times where he even cleared our plates when we were done eating.

Then there were our main guides for the game drives, Josia and Patric. All the guides are terrific, but these two have a special place in our hearts. There are two drives each day, one in the morning leaving at 5:30am, and one in the afternoon leaving at 4:30pm. You can always choose not to go if you don't want to, but with wildlife, you can never tell what you're going to see so you won't want to miss out on any sightings. It was amazing watching Josia and Patric track the animals' footprints and telling us what made it, how long ago, and even whether it was a male or female. Because of their dedication, we got to see three cheetahs fight! Josia always tried to make sure we had the best views we can get while staying safe, and he had such a great personality. Patric is the sweetest guy you will ever meet. He always kept us smiling with his happy persona and easy laugh. We need more people like that in NYC!

Lastly, the meals. After reading some previous reviews, I went in without too much expectations. The food was delicious! You can choose a healthy option for breakfast or the day's egg dishes. Lunch is lighter with things like fruits, a meat and cheese platter, salad, and quiche. Dinner, in particular, was amazing where the chefs whipped up mouthwatering dishes served in the way you would get in a higher end restaurant, and the setting was so romantic. Along with what they bought fresh or grown in their local garden, we had duck, oxtail, and game meats such as ostrich and kudu (a species of antelope) - don't be afraid to try anything because the chefs really know what they're doing. Since we were there during Christmas, each tent got a stocking with stocking stuffers (which I thought was sweet), and a gorgeous table was set up for a special dinner that night with Christmas crackers for each person. The Christmas crackers were a very cute touch and fun conversation starters. Communal dinners allowed us to meet some great people and make new friends. However, because we were there on our honeymoon, a table was set up for us on the lower deck one night so we could also have a romantic private dining experience away from the rest of the group. There was also champagne when we checked in which we drank during our bush bath (a must try!) and two complimentary 45-minute massages.

Fantastic service, great people, delicious meals, and beautiful scenery, not to mention unlimited complimentary drinks (including alcohol)....how could anyone not love this place?? Thank you SO much to Bernie and the "G" team for making our honeymoon so memorable and fun. We hope to be back one day!

We have recently married at Garonga and found the whole experience to be very well organised and just the kind of thing we were looking for.

We decided that we wanted to marry in South Africa "in the bush" before going on to a more relaxing break elsewhere in Africa and the package put together by Imagine Africa exceeded our high expectations. Not one to use travel agencies as a rule, I must say that we found Imagine Africa to be extremely profesional and knowledgable on Africa and I doubt we would have found this gem of a place without them. I have also written a review on the second part of our trip, The White Pearl Resort in Mozambique, if you are interested.

Much has already been said about Garonga so I will concentrate on the wedding element. We wanted something simple, romantic and different and we got all of this.

The person who married us was a scream, he had many interesting stories and jokes, some of which were funny, some not so, but his infectious sense of humour raised a laugh nonetheless.

We chose to get married at the sleepout deck which was some 30-40 minutes away from the lodge. It was nice to drive past Giraffe, Zebra, Warthog etc in our decorative jeep on the way there and back.

We chose to exchange African gifts which again was different and novel and if you don't want a religious ceremony, you don't have to have one which we appreciated.

We opted for a carrot cake for our wedding cake and it was quite possibly the best carrot cake either of us have eaten before.

After our ceremony, formalities, cake and champagne we decided to go out on the evening game drive and we were glad we did after the best leopard sighting you could imagine.

A bush bath followed before a private dinner and more champagne.

Thank you to Bernie and the 'G' team for making our special day just that. We already have provisional plans to return for our anniversary!

We booked our trip with www.sallyandalice.com and they took care of everything for us and even posted out a sarong for both me and my wife for our safari. We missed a connecting flight and Garonga made sure we were picked up from a neighboring airport which really took away a lot of the stress. Upon arrival we were met with a lovely glass of lemonade and nice cold flannel. We were also given 2 lovely water flasks which we were allowed to keep and will certainly cherish. We were shown around the lodge and it was cleaned to within an inch of its life! the cleaners were stealthy and fantastic at their job - we loved the messages they would leave in our sand pit. We stayed in Tent 1 which had an amazing view of both a picnic tree and watering hole, the tent inside was pure luxury and everything was so well presented. We loved the linen dressings gowns so much so that we had to buy one! On our first evening we were introduced to our guides Jaffer & Rebel who were 2 of the loveliest blokes we could have asked to meet. Their knowledge was amazing... there wasn't a question left unanswered and although we never managed to find a leopard we did get to see everything else plus lots lots more... we were taken back on how close up we were to the animals allowing us to get a perfect photo of every animal we came across. Their tracking skills were amazing and we enjoyed learning how this was done! We always felt safe with our guides which allowed us to fully relax and immerse ourselves in the surroundings. The food was lovely and I must admit Warthog was one of the most tastiest meats I have ever tasted to say it was the ugliest animal we came across. We liked how the cook would come out and tell us what we would be eating that night and then come around us individually to ask how we would like our meat cooking. We enjoyed having both group tables and romantic tables for 2. We had a large choice of alcoholic drinks too and also enjoyed surprise cocktails that the guides decided to treat us too... you could help yourself or you could have someone get you a drink which we liked the choice of, we also very much enjoyed the Gin & Tonic breaks in the afternoon. We loved the bush bath which was certainly made more special because we had thunder and lightning which put on a totally new meaning to bathing under the lightning storm. We had so looked forward to meeting the owner Bernie after reading his blogs and other peoples reviews about his hospitality... however unfortunately he was at a trade fair in the UK. However we have had the fortune of communicating before and after by email and I must point out he pays extra special attention to his customers needs and certainly acts upon feedback! We met some great friends that shared our safari vehicle and we now keep in touch with them on facebook which is great. I can truly reccomend Garonga to anyone wishing to go... we booked based on their trip adviser reviews alone and I hope you enjoy your stay too. Upon return to home we received a lovely bouquet of Pink roses for booking with Sally & Alice http://www.sallyandalice.com/ they were fantastic people to deal with and went way and beyond the normal everyday travel operator. we did a little video of our travel to Garonga on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFMk67nrdkA
