I would just like to add our own comments to those of our friends Wendy and Chris below. I can't rate our time at Kwandwe highly enough. We had a wonderful 3 days and the accommodation was out of this world. If anything, the staff were even better and nothing was too much trouble and they were all invariably cheerful. I must mention Chase and Siza in particular, who made the game drives very special and who went out of heir way to show us some very elusive animals. I am converted to Chase's opinion of buffalo after our exciting close up encounter. Although I will probably not wash my hands in future when there is a boomslang slithering about under the basin now Chase has told me how venomous it is!

We can't wait to come back.

We have just returned from South Africa and wanted to write a review of our stay at Kwandwe. We had been 7years ago and returned this year bringing our friends Jenny and Peter for their first visit to this beautiful and exciting place. We were privileged to have Chase and Siza as our Ranger and Tracker. 3 morning and 3 evening drives proved this when we were lucky to see Cheetah cubs, lion cubs and would you believe the elusive leopard. Apart from zebra, elephants, rhino, buffalo, wart hogs and yes Chase the sedately beautiful Giraffe as well as all the various antelope. The Staff were exceptional and couldn't have looked after us any better. Even home made ice cream en route during our 40 degree evening drive. Thank you to everybody for a truly memorable holiday. We will be back !!

Now I know why everyone says you must experience a luxury safari if you can. Our room was so large, with such a beautiful view, that we never really had time to enjoy every part of it. The private deck was great, as was the private plunge pool. The rain shower was really fantastic-absolutely huge!

While we enjoyed the room, it was the game drives that made our stay so memorable. We stayed two nights and had four game drives. While we never did see the elusive leopard, we saw the other big four and even saw the lions take down a wart hog. Our guide, Ivan, and tracker, Sibo, were really great and so enthusiastic about the animals. We appreciated the fact that we shared our 9 passenger vehicle with just one other couple and the drives were based on what we were all interested in seeing.

The food was exceptional and bountiful. Coffee and snacks before the morning drive, breakfast after you return, then time for a nap before lunch. After lunch, time for another nap and then time for the evening drive. After you return from the drive, it's time for dinner. Oh, and don't forget that during the drives there are stops for snacks and sundowners. And pretty much all of your drink choices are covered.

While this is a luxury safari, I'd say it's also a great value. Once you step on the property, all of your costs are covered with the exception of tips. And the amount of animals you see is incredible.

We were very surprise to see the size of the room! It has a big living room and a huge bedroom, and a huge rain shower room plus a outdoor shower and a private plunge pool!
It took me a long time to decide spending R14000/night, as I was not sure what we are getting! Well now I can say, it's all worth well!
Game drive was fantastic and it is amazing how they can spot animal in a 22,000 hector space! I had lots of consideration when picking reserve, too small, not much to see, too big, not able to find, but now it only seem silly to think so much!!! Just do it!!!

This was my first experience in being on Safari and it was excellent. The location is quite close to Port Elizabeth so is easily reached from either the airport or train station in under two hours (a little bit of the way is off road but nothing too rough). The service is fantastic and the game drives interesting and sometimes exciting, with knowledgeable rangers and trackers - thoroughly recommended and will be going back!

Kwande proved to be a standout stay on our Eastern Cape holiday. The decadence and friendly staff matched with great food and open plains left us with very fond memories. Proved to be a great stay for the kids too.

We recently spent 2 lovely days and nights at Ecca Lodge. If it had not been for the fact that we had just been to its sister lodge, Great Fish River Lodge, we would have rated Ecca as one of our best safari destinations to date. The accommodation is comfortable and luxurious; the food is as good as you can find in any top restaurant; the staff (including ranger and tracker) are without exception friendly, efficient and professional; and the game viewing and bird-watching was quite rewarding. Reading some of the earlier reviews, though, I feel a bit jealous because we never saw leopard and only saw one lion. But then on the other hand we saw lots of rhino, buffalo and elephant, as well as a couple of cheetahs (twice).
The other visitors to Kwandwe during our stay came from all over the world (UK, USA, Canada, France, Sweden, Denmark) and it made us quite proud as South Africans to hear how much these visitors enjoyed our country and its scenery, not to mentions the warm hospitality and fabulous cuisine provided by Tilana and her team.

Room Tip: All rooms are similar, but older guests may prefer rooms closer to reception.
