Tanda Tula Safari Camp
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 16, 2010

I went here as a part of my honeymoon on the recommendation of a travel agent. Neither my husband nor I had ever been on safari, so we didn't know what to expect.

What can I say? The staff were unbelievably friendly, helpful and accommodating. The attention to detail was amazing - even though they really took care of us they never felt intrusive as staff sometimes can.

Every single game drive was thrilling and awesome in itself. We saw all the big 5 as well as loads of others. We even saw a cheetah on a kill (although unsuccessful!)

Dinner each evening was a new experience and there was a nice mix of casual dinners around a fire as well as a more formal evening with full service. As we were on honeymoon, a special private dinner was arranged and we returned from the afternoon drive that day to a beautifully set table on the terrace of our tent, a candlelit bath and flower petals strewn on the bed. It was truly the perfect evening. We had our own private waitress and the quality of service and food wouldn't have been out of place in a top London hotel.

I was most looking forward to seeing all the animals when I was preparing for my trip, and I throughly enjoyed every minute on game drive, but on leaving South Africa, it's the people who really made it special.

I would recommend Tanda Tula without hesitation. We are looking forward to our next stay here. Well done and thank you.

Don and Nina

I wanted to tell you how wonderful a stay we had at Tanda Tula this past week. Your entire staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. We learned quite a lot about the Bush and I have to say I enjoyed it slightly more than the football in Jo’Burg. Forman was especially helpful and gave great tours of the Bush. The highlight of each day was dinner at the lodge, the menu and of course the company was exquisite. Thanks so much for a great experience!

We had never been on safari before and Tanda Tula exceeded even our high expectations.
The camp is just what we were looking for - it combines luxury and simplicity. It is true (as some other reviews have pointed out) that it is probably more rustic and less pristine than some top-end safari lodges, but for us that added to the authentic feel of the place. The tented room was very private and comfortable (the bed was great) and the bathroom clean and neat. The view from the deck outside the tent was wonderful.
The position of the camp (next to a watering hole on one side and above a dry riverbed on the other) gives the feeling of being deep in the bush and very close to the nature which is all around.
The staff were all friendly polite and helpful and the food and drink was excellent. We felt that all the staff took pride in making us as comfortable as possible.
The twice-daily safari drives were thrilling. We saw all of the "big five", plus cheetah, jackals, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, etc etc. Each drive had its own excitement and one evening we were lucky enough to see lions killing and eating an impala.
At times I did wonder if we might be disturbing the animals, since we got so close to them and drove into the bush to see them. But it was very clear that the animals are accustomed to the landrovers being close and they did not seem distressed. I think they could have moved off easily enough if they had been bothered by our presence. There are also never more than two cars at one location.
One of our nights we slept out in a hide, which is about 2km from the camp. We were alone in the bush and it was very exciting. The staff had obviously made a real effort to make the hide as comfortable as possible for us.
The only negative comments which I would make are: first that out of the three days, we only walked out in the bush with a guide on one occasion; I would have liked to see this offered every day. Secondly, on one drive we did spend a while waiting for a car to move away from a location so that we could take its place. I guess that is inevitable occasionally but it was not ideal.

We spent 4 nights in Tanda Tula last year and it was an amazing experience - from the daily safari drives, bush breakfast (actually every meal was awesome! kudos to chef david), sun downer drinks to the staff who were ever so attentive. We had Foreman and Scott with us and they were great in sharing their knowledge of the animals, birds and plants. Its our first safari experience and I am so very happy that we stayed here. Tanda Tula came highly recommended to us and our stay there surpassed all our expectations!

We stayed at Tanda Tula for four nights in April and it was an unforgettable experience.

Some reviewers have suggested that the "camp" is a bit basic - if you are looking for minibars, plasma tv's and wi-fi then this is not the place for you.

However, if you want to stay in the most spectacular surroundings and enjoy a fantastic traditional safari then stay here. There are only twelve tents in the camp and they can accurately be described as luxurious with big comfortable beds, fantastic views over the riverbed and proper bathrooms with a bath and an outside (private) shower that is much more fun than it sounds! We lay in bed listening to the monkeys in the trees and the lions calling to each other across the bush, amazing.

The one aspect of Tanda Tula that makes it worth the cost is the staff. Everyone that we met was incredibly helpful, welcoming and friendly. The game rangers who lead the game drives are knowledgable and enthusiastic and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. The camp staff including the management team and the bar/kitchen staff are also brilliant.

Mealtimes are an important part of the experience and we found the food to be consistently excellent. From breakfast cooked in the bush to dinner served around an open fire, the food was simple and delicious.

We were treated to some amazing sights on the game drives, including close-up encounters with all of the 'big five' and dozens of other sightings of other birds and mammals. The rangers take a great pride in finding the best sightings but they are also restrained and show respect for the bush and the wildlife.

We are already saving up to go back!

An excellent well organised safari experience with a well informed and helpful ranger, nothing too much trouble. Good food and friendly, attentive staff. the accommodation was diappointing. The public areas and tented rooms are shabby and in need of refurbishment.
The information (available in rooms) suggests that rangers may be tipped a concessionary amount between 400 - 500 ZAR per tent per day. This seems excessive and although we did leave a tip some guests were so annoyed they chose not to reward good service.

We liked the simpler accommodations of Tanda Tula and the feeling that we were sleeping near the animals. Despite its less grand appearance, it was extremely comfortable and the service and staff very attentive. Timbavati offers amazing access to diversity and abundance of animals and the guide and tracker ensured that we were able to get very close. I was a little uncomfortable with their forays off the road to track an animal since they are inevitably disturbing habitats and breeding grounds but this seems to be a common practice in Timbavati and I wonder about it. We enjoyed the morning breakfasts in the bush and the sundowners overlooking a watering hole. an amazing experience.
