Why you should stay here:
- Spacious, private chalets
- Expertly guided game drives (with Big 5 viewing opportunities)
- Delicious, varied dinners
- Intimate retreat-like setting with space for only 16 (aprox.) guests
- Conveniently located (for a safari lodge) yet very secluded
- Great service

We had just 3 days / 2 nights at Jackalberry with the South Africa package we purchased but it was the most fantastic cap to a wonderful trip.
The lodge is first rate, the housing is separate units that are large, spacious, with a soaking tub(at least in ours), shower, large comfy bed re pleat with mosquito netting, minibar, sofa and chairs and we also had 2 veranda's with chairs for viewing whatever strolled by just outside the fence. There is a library with many titles, television-satellite.The food was superb, plentiful and what a setting to dine-all of Africa to view.
We saw everything there was to see-all of the Big 5, just about every hoofed stock that live there and giraffe and wart hogs and God knows what all.
And you see them UP CLOSE. Without exaggeration, we were often within 2 meters of the animals and they were OK with it as long as you don't stand up or make sudden moves.
Imagine being 10 feet away from a leopard or 3 cheetahs as we were. We came right into herd or buffalo and sat off the side of the road and had 5 white rhino lumber by .
About the only animal seen at any distance was the hippo since they were in the waterhole and besides have a less than accommodating attitude towards people.
The tracker and ranger we had were very knowledgeable and were great at finding fresh tracks that led us to game. The tracker found rhino tracks and we were able to find the 5 we later saw.
I would go back in a heartbeat. It was probably the best vacation we ever took (and we travel a LOT).
The only downside is the 16 hours to get there from the states.

We are a family of five and we ended our two week holiday with a couple of nights at Jackalberry and what a way to end a magnificent trip!! The accomodations were very elegant, clean and comfortable. The lodge was very quaint and small and the service was amazing. There is a small watering hole very close, within view and we saw giraffes, warthogs and impala at it while we were having meals. The food and the service was outstanding. We were a little concerned that Thornybush private game reserve was still "fenced" - thought it might have a feel of a large zoo, but we only came across a fence once on all our game drives and best of all, it was perhaps a bit easier to see lions, cheetahs, servals etc. (we hadn't seen lions in Botswana or Zimbabwe). A great find!!!

I just returned from Jackalberry and must say that it is a great value. I had stayed at a pricier lodge on the first part of my stay and found Jackalberry every bit as good in all categories. The rooms are beautiful and the food is excellent. The staff could not be more welcoming and knowledgable. We saw the Big 5 as well as a host of other animals and in addition to the drives had a daily walk that proved very interesting. I enjoyed the feel of a smaller camp which seemed much less commercial than some of the larger camps. It was truly a great experience.

I stayed at Jackalberry with a few friends in October for a 3-day safari. What an amazing stay! We had downgraded from a more expensive lodge. However, Jackalberry was completely luxurious and attentive to its guests. We couldn't believe it was our "downgraded" choice! The staff is so warm, welcoming, and helpful. They paid attention to our every need. We were pampered everyday, and the food was excellent. The staff made us feel at home - they even hosted a special dinner on our last evening there. Since it's a small lodge (I believe 10 guests at most can stay there at one time), it was also wonderful to meet the other guests from all over the world.

The safari drives were amazing too. We had two drives a day with tea or drinks during the drives. We were able to see the Big 5. And our driver and tracker were awesome - friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to track whatever animals we wished to see! It was very sad to leave Jackalberry - it was like leaving home.

If you're thinking of a more expensive lodge, I would highly recommend that you take a look at Jackalberry. The photos of the place don't do it justice - it really is more beautiful than it photographs. The staff is warm and inviting - and you're pampered like royalty. The safari drives are so much fun, and you're guaranteed to see so much. I can't imagine staying at another place.
