“Ngala Tented Camp - Is cool..”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

We stayed here between 7th and 12th May - 5 Nights. The place is simply awesome. Dennis the camp manager; Francois, Richard and team rocked. They served us lovely Indian vegetarian food as well. Dylan our ranger and Adam our tracker were simply superb. On day one we saw the 4 out of big 5. The camp is in the middle of the private reserve. Off roading was awesome. We could hear the lions roar in the night from our rooms. Fantastic place. Great staff. Great team work. Location on Timbavati river bank adds to the charm of the rooms.

Room Tip: we stayed in tent nos 7,8 and 9. These are brand new luxury tents and are very private and quiet. Do...

This was our fourth safari destination, having visited, Kenya, Botswana and Tanzania on previous trips. We stayed four nights and we were very very satified with everything. The nature around the concession is really beautiful, and the area is very private with only the main camp sharing the area, so we never saw many other vehicles on game drives. We had some truly excellent "quality wildlife sightings" and managed to see all the Manificent seven- Rhino, wild dog, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, elephant and buffalo. We spent long periods at all sightings following a leopard for about 1 hour, watching cheetah finishing off a kill and being chased away by vultures, watching a 22 strong pride of Lions eating a widebeast and another 2 bachelors that had killed a buffalo, three rhinos came very cloe to our vehicle and just continued grazing, and we ran into a herd of about 700 buffalo.
The lodge is excellent with a super staff. Your butler will quickly learn your tastes for food and ask if you would like any regular additions to the menu. Even though the set menue never contained a very wide choice, the chef was very flexible and would cook anything you wished, so it was a bit like being at home with a cook in the house. The main areas were very comfortable and nicely decorated with views of the dry riverbed. We saw elephant from the pool on one occasion, regular visits from monkeys, and some Nyala came up t our tent. The rooms were really super with an outdoor shower, very comfortable bed and excellent setting. We were in room (tent) # 7. We will definitely consider Ngala and other & Beyond properties for future trips if we can afford it and they don't increase their prices :-)

Room Tip: Rooms (tents) 7 through nine are best and have a view of the riverbed

This is five star in so many ways, location, exclusivity, beautifully decorated tented accomodation which is utterly luxurious and complete with incredible outdoor shower (pure decadence), fully stocked mini bar, numerous gorgeous seating areas for the guests and a wonderful pool overlooking the Timbavati River. This is a modern, stylish lodge with very private accomodation.

The one huge disappointment for us as regular &Beyond guests, and having just come from the Safari Lodge was the food. Lunch was mediocre with minimal choice, dinner was again mediocre with barely any choice. It's customary to have a selection of starters and possible also desert but we were lumped with butternut soup which really is quite plain. We can cook that at home. The venison was tough, the desert was with no garnish or decoration. Really, more effort could have been made here.

The irony was that on arrival the camp manager declared unprompted that "our food is really good here" well, I tend to disagree. It's not! And the kitchen or those in charge of menu need to realize that great food and a just few simple choices is what we seek in these establishments.

The service was warm and friendly, although perhaps less relaxed and on the ball than it was at the Ngala Safari Lodge. Our ranger was great and went to the ends of the earth to find us good sightings. The lodge would have been superb had the food not let us down. Oh, and the non working chandelier in the room. Such a gorgeous feature, but it wouldn't switch on. What a pity.

Having visited Ngala Tent Camp some 6-7 years ago and then found is stunning, it was really a treat to be back at the new and much improved Tent Camp.
Only " BEAUTIFULL" can describe the new camp. Everything is thought of.
Just love camping. The full &beyond treat was rolled out: excellent food, superb service and marvelous sightings.
we will definately be back for more

We had visited Ngala Tented Camp on three previous occassions and following a complete camp rebuild following a disastrous flood booked again. It was as if a perfect, flawless diamond had been reset in a new and exqusite setting The new tents are uber luxurious and lack nothing in the way of creature comforts although I do agree with a previous reviewer the multitude of light switches took some days to fathom!!

What makes this camp perfect however is the ENTIRE team that care for their guests ALL went that extra mile at every opportunity to ensure our stay was perfect - cook, housekeeper, management team but especial mention deservedly goes to our butler for the fourth year David (he even remembered our favourite drinks from 3 years ago) to Ernest our tracker and to Robin our Ranger who met our requirements with sensitivity Ngala always held an especial place in our hearts - this return has enlarged upon that to an immeasurable degree

Animal sightings up there with the best ever - we were there for 6 nights and saw everything and more - wild dog for the first time , a mother cheetah with 5 cubs, lion, rhino, leopard and found ourselves in the midst of 1000 buffalo

I would give this this camp and the entire andBeyond team (inc their agent Suzie) 10 stars if I could I cannot recommend this special place more highly It might not boast the alleged glamour or reputaion of some of the highest end and most expensive lodges (at which we have stayed) but there are none that have mixed the ingredients to a perfect safari to such exquisite perfection

We will be back!

We have just returned from Ngala tented lodge. We had the most amazing experience. The tents are very spacious and have everything you need including a safe which I've read in another review someone didn't have, my only complaint would be the chairs on the decks, they are hard and uncomfortable. The food is good, the chef really went out of his way to accommodate us because there is a very limited selection of food, they have gone "fine dining" which we really don't like especially in the bush. We are used to having a lunch tray in the bush (most of the lodges do this, they put a selection of meat and salads on a tray) these trays are normally varied and delicious and now at tented camp you get two options but as our first lunch day both options were fish and we don't eat much fish so the chef made us a salad. Dinner was also still good but disappointing as again it was fine dining and not the usual food you get in the lodges although one night we had a bush dinner and that was fantastic so one night out of three our dinner was great. We also had a bush breakfast one morning which was incredible, best bush breakfast we have ever had just a shame the lunches and dinners are limited and not as good as other private lodges we have been to.
We requested a ranger and tracker (Alan and Farnie) from Ngala main camp and they came to tented camp to drive us for our stay, we really appreciated the lodges going out of their way to do this for us. The staff at Ngala lodges are fantastic, they are all so friendly and make you feel at home and nothing you ask them is too much trouble, truly the best staff we have encountered in the very many private game lodges we have been to.
The game viewing was unbelievable, we still cannot believe the sightings we had. We saw 21 lions bringing down 2 impala and then eating them and fighting over the meagre meal, was so exciting, we saw these and other lions on most of our drives, out of 6 drives we saw cats on 5 drives often more than one pride of lions and on 2 drives we saw cheetah and leopard on 3 drives. We saw 2 porcupines but this is rare, hyena taking a stolen duiker kill out of a shallow watering hole then they took it to their cubs who ate and fought over it. We saw 9 wild dogs kill an impala and they eat quickly but before they could finish 3 lions stole their kill and fought over it. We go to game lodges quite often and we realise this is not normal game viewing we were extremely fortunate to experience all of this in one weekend. I am already looking at dates to return to Ngala tented.

What a fabulous place- the personalised service and little surprises they throw your way, the delicious food and the super design. Manager Francois, butler Richard and ranger Derrick went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. The wildlife viewing was good- although given the thick growth and tall grass at this time of year, it is harder to spot animals. The location on the banks of a river is very peaceful and attracts animals in the dry season. The free laundry is a nice addition, and they even mended my husband's shoes for free.
I would give this place 6 out of 5!
