“Good Experience”
Reviewed November 9, 2011

This lodge gives you a good - but not fantastic, bush experience. The rooms and bathrooms are very comfortable and have all the little luxurious touches you would expect from a lodge of this calibre but it could maybe do with a little updating - the outside patios could be a little more comfortable with better furniture. the game viewing when we went was good - the wild dogs were denning on their property so that was a real treat. As South Africans though who frequent the bush a lot we felt that our game drives could have been a little more interesting as for us it is not only about spotting the big five. If this was the only lodge you had ever been to you would probably not be able to fault it but when drawing comparisons to other lodges unfortunatley it just falls short in some areas.

And Beyond the operators of this Safari Lodge were amongst the innovators in the safari lodge business in South Africa and it's sad to see how far behind this property is, the staff are courteous and well meaning but lack management entirely. In short it's an old lodge in need of refurbishment and some effective, constructive management and staff training. The game viewing was great, but there's a general lack of service throughout and as the Japanese proverb says, A fish rots from the head, the staff are courteous and willing, just a little well guided management input could make all the difference.

My family of 6 (4 kids, 2 adults) stayed at Ngala 2 weeks ago for 5 nights. Everything was fantastic - the game drives, the rooms, the staff, the food, the lounge and dining areas. With tracker, Herbert, and guide, Andrew, we saw all that we had hoped to see and at VERY close range. Plenty of elephants, giraffe, zebras, antelopes, buffalo, hyenas, numerous rhino, hippo's, 26 different lions including a pride of 12 feeding on a buffalo kill, 4 leopards sightings - one where we watched for some time a leopard stalk impala, plus plenty of birds, mongoose, hare, jackal, ostrich etc. Both our guide and tracker were very knowledgeable and fun and made the game drives a great experience.

For us it was mainly about seeing the animals and so in this respect we were extremely happy with our viewings. The luxury and ambience of the lodge made the whole expereince unforgettable and a great holiday. For the rest of our time in Africa the kids kept asking "can we go back to Ngala", at one point they were chanting "Ngala, Ngala, Ngala...."

Recently spent 4 wonderful nights here. The game drives were exciting, well conducted, and we saw all the animals we expected and more. Hospitality and service outstanding. Ranger Ian, tracker January and butler Nat were all great. Would love to return.

A private concession in the Kruger National Park, & Beyond's Ngala Safari lodge offers a superb experience. Rangers take you off the roads which dramatically improves your game viewing experience - we saw wild dog and leopard. The service is excellent, food is delicious, the rooms are comfortable ensuite with all the trimmings. It is good value for money if you compare it to other concessions. The company also gives a lot back to the community, hugely, so this also makes you feel happy. Ask about bush breaks as these are discounted packages.

We spent three days at Ngala and enjoyed six game drives that provided us with more game sightings than we had hoped for and more animals per sighting than I could imagine. Mike, our first rate ranger and Elvis, our tracker kept us informed of all tracks they spotted and identified animals, plants and birds expertly. We tracked a large male leopard through heavy, seemingly impassible brush for 20 minutes until the magnificent cat sat down for an extended photo op. At one point we found ourselves in the middle of a heard of 500 cape buffalo. We saw elephants, hippos rhinos, giraffes and countless antelope throughout our drives. Seldom did we go more than 10 minutes without seeing something worth making note of. We saw nine rare wild dogs and an even rarer caracal, African lynx, on a night drive. The staff was wonderful and meals were tasty and interesting. I ate kudu, ostrich steak and ostrich sausage while there. There is nothing to criticize at Ngala - well, it would have been helpful to have the schedule posted somewhere in writing. I was never quite sure when meals were being served or when game walks were scheduled so we found ourselves uncertain, but happy.

What an experience & game drives we had as a first timer, we just returned from four nights at Ngala Lodge. Friendly staff, Kevin, dedicated butler to our family, good breakfast, lunch & dinner and morning tea, evening drinks while on game drive.

May be it is because of our ranger Dylan, tracker Fanny and their experience, we were very lucky to see a group of lion parade, group of hyenas, wild dogs, buffalos, two leopards, rhino, giraffes and elephants almost everywhere. Our ranger drove our vehicle so close to the animals it was a great experience to see the lions & leopards so close. we had eight game drives in total, each game drive was different to others and excited.

Overall, an excellent trip where everyone in my family enjoyed every moment while in the lodge and ended our 15day South Africa with high note.

Room Tip: If possible try to get ranger Dylan, tracker Fanny while booking in this lodge
