Gomo Gomo was our second lodge in a private reserve and, while not as luxurious as the first, it is the one we would return to. The atmosphere is relaxing and casual and the staff makes every effort to have guests feel at home. Our ranger, Michael, although still being trained, was able to answer every question and could identify any animal, bird, bush, or tree we encountered. A great deal of effort went into trying to make sure we saw as much as possible during our game drives. And the food was excellent.

We have just returned from 3 nights at the new Gomo Gomo Game Lodge.Small and friendly, with eight brick & thatch chalets consisting bedroom and bathroom with views of the bush or the dam where animals come to drink. The main thatched lodge consisted of dining area, lounge area, kitchen and small bar, some evening meals being served ouside around the bomo.We had two game drives each day, getting up at 5am, having coffee and shortbread and setting off at 6am for three hours, and again at 4pm for 3 hours. The rangers, Andries, Andre and Johan and the trackers Jeffrrey and Oscar were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We saw a leopard on our first drive, and then many elephants, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and a pride of 12 lions all lazing around in the hot afternoon sun. We also saw a pack of wild dogs, which is an endangered species in Africa. Bird life was abundant. It was a great priviledge to share this very special environment with the animals who live there.Gomo Gomo is very much in the bush and as the Timbavati is privately owned and access is limited we did not encounter other safari vehicles on game drives. The staff at the Lodge were very friendly, food was plentiful, varied, and very good- 3 meals a day! Very relaxing , really didn't want to leave !

we have just come back from our honeymoon around South Africa and my most memorable time was the Safari with Gomo Gomo. This was our first Safari and I thought 3 nights would be enough - there is only so many animals you could see is what I thought!! How wrong I was, I wish we had stayed for 5 nights.
Gomo Gomo was completely brilliant, the staff do their upmost to make sure you have a special time. We went at a time where they were about to move to a new place but that still did not stop them focusing their attention on your stay. Food is plentiful, and very nice. I felt safe here during day and night and the knowledge of the trackers and rangers were brilliant, we learnt so much here. You get very close to the animals so this sort of place is not good for restless children as you have to be very quiet and still when you are near them (obviously). They have a Honesty bar so drinks are always available without you having to ask all the time. I would most def recommend Gomo Gomo and am wanting to go back next year to see what the new accomodation is like as I had heard it was very good. I would recommend this place to my family and friends as I know here they would have a awesum time, just like we did.
NOTE - we were told to take binoculars, a extremely good zoom camera, We did not take or need binoculars and our camera had a standard zoom on it - and our pics have come out very good. You need a hat as you are out in the heat for a few hours on each trip.

My husband and I recently spent three weeks traveling around South Africa. Of that, we spent five nights in the Kruger area: two nights at Gomo Gomo in Timbavati and three nights at Khoka Moya (Honeyguide) in Manyeleti. Although we were very happy with both, we have to give Gomo Gomo the bigger thumbs up.

I should note that Gomo Gomo moved camps right after we stayed there. I'm not sure how their new facilities compare (although I'm sure they are better). It sounds like the game driving will be just as good.

The lodgings at the old Gomo Gomo were quite simple. I wouldn't give our thatched hut a huge thumbs up, although it wasn't bad. It was just a little old, we had two single beds, fans (no A/C), an older bathroom, etc.

The reason Gomo Gomo was so great was because of the rangers and trackers. They did everything to ensure we had a good time and saw animals. We traveled off road following tracks and animals and we went out rain or shine (it rained a lot). We saw pretty much everything (lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants, zebra, giraffe, etc.) The only thing that we did not see in Gomo Goom were rhinos. Gomo Gomo was not as fancy as Khoka Moya (nor as expensive), but the game viewing was much better and the safari feeling was much more intense. I would recommend that anyone stay at Gomo Gomo and if not at Gomo Gomo, at least in Timbavati.

My wife and I have just got back from a 17 day holiday in South Africa, where we had 3 nights at the wonderful Gomo gomo Game Lodge.

We had done a fair bit of research on different game reserves and Gomo gomo seemed to come out top in all the things we were looking for. This was the 1st time that either of us had been on safari so we wanted it to be special, but on the same time we didn't want to still be paying for the experience for the next 3 years!

Gomo gomo is excellent value, it’s not cheap but it offers a 5 star experience at way below 5 star prices. If your idea of Safari is to be pampered and have your every whim attended to by a multitude of staff then Gomo gomo probably won't be for you (as the accommodation is probably 4 star), although all the staff make you feel very comfortable and welcome. However if you are interested in experiencing a 5 star game drive (which is what most people are interested in) then this place is definitely for you.

On our game drives we saw all of the big five (lions, elephants, rhino, buffalo and leopards), and had many encounters with hippos, giraffe, zebra, springbok, waterbucks and many more. Not many things in life justify me to get up at 5:30am on my vacation, but this is well worth it. Also as the lodge is on a river/watering hole you get many elephants come through the camp, which is quite an experience when they come wandering 2m from your tent. The camp is quite unique as its one of the last few remaining open camps with no fences, so the animals can wander freely through the camp, which offers the opportunity for some very close (but safe) encounters.

A sign of a good game lodge is the fact that there is a good mix of South African visitors mixed with international tourists, combined with the fact that Gomo gomo has a lot of repeat visitors (we met one family that have come back twice a year, every year since 1999).

Through a combination of great game viewing, friendly and knowledgeable staff (special mention to Christoph/Andre), great food and comfortable accommodation, all at pretty reasonable rates, Gomogomo lodge delivers a fantastic and memorable safari experience. We would happily return and would recommend to others.

We spent 5 nights (17-22 July 2008) at Gomo Gomo. We all had a fantastic time, including daughter age 10. We would highly recommend Gomo Gomo to anyone who wants to experience the magic of the Mopane bushveld and wildlife wandering free. We flew in to Hoedspruit and were met by Mike from Gomo Gomo who drove us to the camp - an enthusiastic young ranger with a good knowledge of ornithology. Our hut was spacious and comfortable with a great view of the river. When we arrived there was a baboon sitting under our window. That night elephants could be heard passing right by the hut and down in the river we could hear the hippos splashing. One evening a leopard passed through camp. There is no fence around the camp so you are one with the bush! The food was great, the staff very friendly and the whole ambience peaceful and relaxing. However, the highlights were definitely the 9 morning and evening game rides with our experienced and knowledgeable game ranger Andrê and game spotter Jeffery. You are woken at 5.30am in time to eat a shortbread and swallow some coffee before piling onto the back of the long wheel base open Landover at 6.15 for the game drive We seldom got back before 9am, stopping part way through for coffee and confectionary. There was nothing that Andrê and Jeffery would not do to ensure you had the best time ever! We saw everything one could hope to see, and closer than you would want some times! We even saw an elephant with three back legs! We drove up vertical cliffs and down shear drops and squeezed between rocks and trees through gaps that looked impassable. I realized my 400mm camera zoom lens was an overkill on some occasions when the glass was being fogged up by leopard’s breath, we were that close! Not to mention the lion’s fart (way to close)! Mid-morning there was an optional bush walk followed by lunch at 2pm. The evening drive was equally spectacular - 3.30pm till well after 7 some nights. A cleanup, drinks around the bar, followed by more than adequate dinner in the boma around the open fire at 8pm rounded off each fantastic day. The fact that this lodge is popular with bargain-savvy South Africans as well as overseas visitors is a good indication of the quality. I have no hesitation in recommending it. My only minor criticism is that the bar could stock a slightly larger variety of the excellent South African wines for us thirsty Canadians! Visit and you won't be disappointed! Now I have 4,000 wildlife photos to sort through! Bliss!

  • Liked — Fanatastic setting, no fence separating your from the wildlife
  • Disliked — South Africa has some excellent wines - the selection at the bar could be expanded somewhat.
