In January 2008 we had a 4 night stay at Hongonyi Private Game Lodge, South Africa. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by our hosts Des & Kim Nel and then shown to our well appointed and comfortable room. After un-packing we were offered afternoon tea in the bar which also has a viewing deck, from which we spent the afternoon watching the animals visit the water hole. Dinner and breakfast were served in the dining area, adjacent the Boma. The meals were very well prepared and served, with a good variety to please all tastes. The staff and service were fantastic and Des & Kim have a wealth of knowledge that they are enthusiastic to share about Africa’s animals and the bush.

The 1400 hectare private game reserve has all of the Big 5 except elephant and lion (although you can see them on a game drive in the adjoining Kapama Reserve). On the morning walking safaris, Des was keen to point out the often overlooked Small 5 or even some of the Secret 7. Our game drives in the evening always presented something new, close encounters with white rhino or seeing some of the many baby giraffes while enjoying the great sundowners at sunset. One evening we raced back to the lodge because Kim received a radio call saying the three resident cheetahs had come for a visit … up close and personal with cheetahs at Hongonyi, probably the most memorable part of our three weeks in South Africa.

Hongonyi is well positioned to visit Blyde River Canyon, a must see experience which can easily be done in a day, or even visit the Cheetah Breeding Project nearby, which will show you the great work that is being done to lift this wonderful animal from the endangered species list. Hongonyi is also only an hour’s drive away from the Orpen Gate of Kruger National Park. Definitely visit Kruger, but as we found Hongonyi had it all on our doorstep.

Des and Kim’s passion for their work can be best described as infectious and they provided us with a wonderful insight not only about the animals, especially the cheetahs, but the total ecosystem of South Africa.

Hongonyi was our last “lodge” stay in South Africa and we are glad it was; it proved to be a real gem and a wonderful experience. We would definitely recommend at least a 3night stay at Hongonyi to soak up the amazing experience of South Africa.
